I liked Sonic Unleashed on the Wii (I watched a playthrough of the other version, I think the way the Wii one strips out the town roaming is a hard positive). Also I never really understood Liam's Chip hate, and I actually think the art style and tone choices are generally the turning point to the games being okay again. Although now that I think about it, that okay period only lasted 2 games...

I don't think anyone's seeing Unleashed's NPC designs as reactions to feedback from the character designs from Sonic '06. If Liam wants the people to look less cartoony, I wonder if he remembers the juxtaposition of Sonic and pals with the normal-rear end humans from the previous game.

Cartoony and more Eggman-like designs are totally a response to character designs from '06, most of everything was probably. I need to look at the Wii version myself, but yeah, no roaming around talking to people is a hard positive. Going off of PokeCapn's LP, my guess for Liam's salt would be the african daytime level or the boss fight, which require really fast reactions and lots of boosting.

Yeah, probably the Egg Beetle, since you either boost constantly or you don't reach the boss ever. It is the first point in the game where it goes 'no no, you WILL boost constantly, or you are DONE with this game'. I love that boss because it's just a flurry of speed and dodging and feeling like a supersonic motherfucking hedgehog, but if Liam is really that opposed to boosting, even on a wide, straight track, then he is probably going to resent it.

Watching that made me think about halfway in "Okay, it's on the level of Subnautica's Early Access stuff" but then they got into the trading and that was a bit more interesting. I dunno if this would be enough to get me to play it again for any length of time, but becoming an alien trade mogul seems at least to be a gameplay objective/point to follow. Presumably future updates will expand on this. Fingers crossed, I suppose.

It's actually on sale right now for 35 bucks. I got 80 hours out of it in its original form, so as long as you jump in with the goal of exploring rather than based off the insane hype thanks to Molyneux 2.0, you'll likely get 35 bucks worth out of it as it is. I can totally understand waiting for future updates too, though.

And I think returning to more cartoonish designs after trying to do sonic characters along with semi-realistic Anime persons is a great change. Maybe they could tweak where they land on that spectrum, or one could argue if people should be around at all, but I can't see the value in Sonic animals and Eggman existing along with fully proportioned cookie cutter humans.
