You can bet you rear end the ray-tracing algorithm they use to figure out which surfaces are closer to the camera is hosed-up beyond belief and cannot deal with their 64-bit implementation. Add to that artists who are given carte blanche to throw a billion triangles into everything and the poor algo must have developed self-awareness and killed itself.

I remember one patch for EVE that was wonderful in that regard. They were updating the rendering to accept more complex models and shaders, but screwed something up pretty badly. Somehow, the reference coordinate system got inverted, so all ships that used cached model data flew backwards, and all (predominantly) structures that used cached surface and texture data would be rendered “inside-out” — all polygon faces were pointing in the wrong direction, so you'd see the backside of the station being rendered on the inside, and the front of the station not being rendered at all. It was a very confusing day in space until they emergency patched that one.

Oh, and his VP of marketing is his ex-tickle-pornstar wife. No really, people are paying hundreds of dollars. There's one guy who's in for like 30 grand." If/when this thing finally collapses or explodes, I honestly hope someone does a book on it. A news story just wouldn't be able to cover even a fraction of the story.

For a long time CIG never went under $20k a day, anything drifting that direction caused a sale. After 2.0 shipped last year, their low end daily between sales was 70k/day for a couple of months, new gameplay, ok you can see that generating interest. Since then sales have been so often the daily figure hasn't had time to settle down. They have just finished a massive sale, biggest ever, they sold everything so the whales will have been spending like crazy. As far as I know (because I've started to lose interest) there's no sale currently on. So, no whales should be spending, as nothing special on sale and they should be tapped out for a couple of weeks anyway. The low end starter package is $45, so according to the chart, CIG are getting ~1000 new punters a day, 4+ years after the kickstarter with no new game play for 6 months and their major fan site videos get hundreds of views per show? Something badly stinks about the current funding figures, it's just not believable. The new Citizen forum on RSI has 3 threads with a post in them today, 2 threads active yesterday. I'm not sure how one would begin to craft the book. Hell you'd have to start with the Wing Commander days, followed up with race horses and a used car dealership and then the kickstarter fest. That is a fiasco just getting to that point. But the real treasures are like you pointed out. You'd be explaining the story and then have to catch yourself with tales of the tickler, the hate speech Ben rantings and creepy pictures, all the different *gates, spitting on the cake, devious ship sales, etc. In the end, the "would you believe people have dumped thousands into this" is probably the most effective. So combine it all along with the Stimpire poo poo, and sprinkle our Warlord blogs into this the book would be more convoluted than the existing source code. Poetic justice in the grand scheme of things.
