I've made this same statement for 2 seasons yet here I am still watching.

Yeah same. The episodes are very hit or miss. And overall the whole show just feels recycled now. Rick & Co. just seem to move from town to town, making new friends and enemies, and experience the same problems. This show isn't offering anything fresh or interesting anymore. I'm interested in what Negan will do but I just get a feeling that all these other small groups will just team up and take on his army, regardless will stop watching after this season. For future seasons I might just wait for the entire season to end and then just watch certain episodes, as these filler episodes just seem like a huge waste of time.

Back on topic, I binged through Humans. First season was fantastic, the second season's plotlines seem a bit all over the place, but still pretty good.

I gave up after the whole Glenn dumpster fiasco. Suspension of belief is one thing, but outright stupidity of the writers, backtracking character development, and the constant misery porn just became too monotonous.

Just starting season 4 of Justified.

Going through The 4400. What a fantastic show, about people with superpowers that I didn't think of as a "superhero show" for 2 seasons even though it covers many of the same beats like vigilantism and registration.

For the past few months I've worked my way through all of the CW (and CBS) DC shows, just finished Legends of Tomorrow this morning. Overall, I've enjoyed everything even if I think the first few seasons of Arrow were a lot more compelling than the last few. I am looking forward to eventually watching more of them as they're added to Netflix, which thankfully is a lot sooner than it used to be. These are all easily watchable and are basically the 20-40 year olds versions of CSI and NCIS and I am ok with that.

I would check out Constantine as well but it's not on streaming, as far as I can tell.

Don't give up on The Pacific, it's genuinely good. But it does have some really weird pacing and structure issues in the first several episodes. Throws you straight into a messy and confusing night battle with no idea who anyone is, then it has an "and now a break from the war" episode which is really good, but you can't have that as like your third episode as it just feels unearned coming that early. The second half of the series is just stellar though, it hits its stride and is solid gold until the end.

Or if you can be suitably entertained by repetitive COCKSUCKAH jokes - and almost literally two scenes built of cardboard which are used for basically 90% of scenes in the entire show.

I liked Deadwood despite its limited scope, but I'm not sure how it connects to Justified

There's a scene early on in Justified where his ex calls him the angriest person she knows. In Deadwood, he plays the *actual* angriest person in the world. Like Seth Bullock is almost incapable of getting through a "Good morning" with someone without looking like he's going to tackle them to the ground and bash their head in.

Honestly, the best part about Bullock in Deadwood is how the Big Bad Mob Boss actually starts to want him as the town sheriff because he'd actually do a good job while the mob boss ran circles around him.

But Bullock's too much of a whiny rage monster to properly understand that.

Deadwood is one of my favorite shows of all time. Back when it was airing I was the original OP for all the season threads.

Olyphant was one of my draws to Justified, but I have noticed a lot of Deadwood alumni showing up through the seasons, so that is a bonus. He was a much angrier character in Deadwood for sure.

That messed with me. I don't know much about Roman history but even the show made a point of having Crassus and Ceaser constantly call him a brat kid. Then some middle aged dude shows up dressed like Roman Liberace. It was off putting.

But I was too busy crying about the death of everyone I liked at that point to really care.

Yeah he was, and also always deadly serious and he seemed like he was pissed off that he didn't have a good reason to be violently pissed off even when he wasn't actively engaged in a conflict with someone.

I watched the first... maybe four episodes? and I just could not get into it. It felt like a show for kids, in the way that something like Adventure Time or Gravity Falls didn't. When would you say it gets really good? I might give it another try at some point since a lot of people seem to really dig it. (I guess I also felt the same way about Avatar at first, and then it got awesome...)

It was kind of the opposite for me, watching Gravity Falls and SU around the same time I became more and more disappointed that GF wasn't really willing to do anything really serious or nuanced with its characters whereas SU seemed to have a whole hell of a lot of genuine heart and went some places with its character arcs that I found impressively complex for the type of show it is. I still don't really care for episodes in SU that focus on the town characters because the gem plotlines tend to be the more serious/interesting ones IMO, but even those can still be pretty good. Looking back on the S1 episode descriptions though I can't really pinpoint a specific point where it becomes different, it was just one of those shows that had a very organic and natural development for both its plot and characters.

It's amazing how absolutely right he is about season 1 being mostly forgettable tripe which then evolves over the next two seasons into something really dark and really intelligent.

there's a moment in season 3 where a main character is shot and Finch, racked with panic (and probably a bit of PTSD considering his own past) stands there while trying to decide what to do - answer The Machine's insistent phone ringing behind him or help his friend who is dying.

that's what sold me on this show whole-hog.

drat.

S1 is really good on a rewatch because all the dope poo poo that starts happening in S2 onwards is very clearly set up and you can track back basically any amazing reveal or twist in s2/3 to some seemingly innocuous "typical action procedural/flashback" plot beat.

It reminded me of Fringe a lot. Both shows initially threw me off because they gave the impression that it's all just going to be a procedural, monster/case of the week kind of thing, with only the occasional glimmer of actual plot.

And then you figure out the plot is intertwined with the weekly stuff and the show moves more and more into plot-heavy episodes and suddenly, before you notice it, you're watching actually great television.

I think that slow-burn quality of it turned a lot of the potential audience off. I mean they still did better numbers than an HBO "prestige" show like Westworld every week for several years, but it was never the blockbuster that other shows were.

Still 5 years is a nice run for something so subversive. It's also delightful to watch Jim Caviezel just kneecapping people in a smooth suit trading quips with Michael Emerson for most of the show.

I just got through the first season, I'm kinda waiting for a secondary character to remark on the main characters not being miserable gits all the time anymore. I'm not sure if the writing is better or injecting a bit of humour into the show made it better than S1, but I'm watching a least 1 episode a day now instead of a couple a week now, so something is working better. Could be the dog.

Bear is the best. When you meet Shaw and Root that's when the whole thing really cooks.

Fusko does a lot of the comic-relief heavy lifting early on, like saying "Easy on the volume there! No wonder Mr. Sunshine is always in a foul mood!" and his relentless nicknames.

Finch is always Mr. Sunshine or Glasses or Birdman (i think i made that one up) and Reese is Tall Dark and Deranged or Mr. Congeniality. It really makes you appreciate the writing that he doesn't have to explain who he means by his sarcastic nicknames.

After Finch comes back in early S2 he calls Fusco at one point and Fusco looks at his phone and instead of the typical Dexter style FINCH CALLING Fusco''s phone says "MR GOOD NEWS" and I laugh every time I see it. Fusco is so great.

I feel like this is sorta becoming an established way to basically trick network tv channels into taking on weird conceptual shows. Pitch it as a procedural and then get wild with it. Hannibal did the same thing.
