My guiding Moonlight...

Rexroom posted:

Here's the thing though: While the actual Zelda gameplay video Nintendo uploaded is a 60 fps video, you can see in segments with Bill and his friend that it's shot in 24 fps. Hence the suspicion that they dumped the framerate of the recorded game footage that ran in 30 fps to 24 frames to make it gel with the filmed segments at the expense of making the game looking particularly "framey". So it's not a question of 24 fps shown in 60 fps, it's about 30 fps video shown in 24 fps.

To underline further: 24 fps is fine for shots with motion blur (ie. movies), it's not fine for video games that do not have motion blur naturally. Without motion blur, the "frameyness" would be pretty obvious, because there's nothing to blend the frames together. (As an example, see this video with motion blur used on a 20 fps video.)

To summarize: Nintendo needs better video editors. The game looked good, though.

Ahh, I see, but I don't buy it because there's parts in the video where the frame-rate in the game jumps up and it's smoother for very brief periods of time. Also 30fps shouldn't be acceptable at all in YTOOL 2016.

I reject all game development directions that require me to use more of my lovely and terrible body to play it instead of a controller. If Link has my swordplay and archery skills, Hyrule is hosed.

that sucks. maybe just stick to watching the Zelda movie when it comes out then. no coordination required, except for aiming your eyes in the general direction of the screen :)

I replayed Z1 and 2. Then I started LttP and got bored right as I entered dark world. This further cements in my mind that this is the most overrated game in the series. It really hasn't held up well.

I've been playing through Ocarina of Time on my Wii and it's still super great aside from the controls. I long for a camera stick. Somehow the stick on my pro controller perfectly captures how shittastic the N64 analog stick was. I still can't beat that stupid shooting gallery after all these years.

Personally I think it's implied any horse is eventually rideable, even if there's an official Epona.

I think it's pretty likely, yeah. I'm assuming that Epona will be the best horse overall, but earned in the midgame portion. As far as customising horses goes, it'd be interesting to see them have different skins available. For example, a King Of Red Lions skin for a horse would be super fun to see.

I mastered Majora 3D twice, but I never could muster the effort to do the same to Ocarina 3D. Was it the fishing? Was it the big Poes? Was it the Gerudo Archery challenge? Or the race against Dampe?

Something about the Forest Temple always hosed me up in OoT. Loved the game, would have replayed it way more often, but every time it was the Forest Temple that took me for a loop. I don't get it. I obviously beat it the first time. Obviously beat the Water Temple which is the one you might think got in my way but nope, Water Temple was one of my favourites! It was only until coming across fan reaction on the Internet years later that I had any idea people might not like it.

Inner Monologue Proofread Edit: Lobok, it's either "threw me for a loop" or "took me for a ride", not "took me for a loop".

I've just resigned myself to looking at a guide whenever I've thrown everything against the wall or whenever I feel like I need to do something but it might waste a bunch of time if I'm wrong. I always get caught up by games where I have to go do something that I already tried that didn't work but now it will work because some other thing changed. The forest temple is annoying because it's the first temple with keys and none of the keys are really on the way to the doors.

Zelda is the one series I can't stand looking up in a guide. LttP was my first Zelda game and my parents bought me the guide along with it (not because they knew what strategy guides were but probably because some clerk upselled them on it) and so I never figured out that game on its own, which I never wanted to repeat. Other games I don't care, it's just Zelda games I refuse to look up.

Using the guide is definitely a trap. I think I still have physical guides to OoT and MM somewhere. I started using it to find all the minor stuff like the sun's song and some bottles and whatever. I'm not 10 years old anymore, I don't have time to scour the entire game for every little thing. I started worrying about missing something and kept looking at it. Now I make sure to actually play the dungeon as far as I can before looking something up.

I can definitely see why I had the guides 20 years ago though. Sometimes the only information for the next thing you have to do is mentioned by the big owl one time. So when I was a kid and went through the dialogue and then hosed off to the fishing pond and then quit playing, I'd totally forget what to do when I loaded it back up. Unless Navi says it six million times or something.

You don't need the horse to complete the race A, and B there is like zero nuance to being able to control good to win that race, just use one carrot at a time, use it again, and then on the final stretch use all five carrots. There's no losing. C the race is unwinnable if you aren't using Epona. The default horse he gives you can't win, in case you are doing that.

I know all that, it's just that the circle stick is so slippery, if I hold it in any direction for a while i lose control as it loses contact with my thumb. makes 3D land suck too.

All the Zelda horses suck.

TP Epona might suck most due to poo poo collision detection and compulsory escort mission involving horseback archery, but there's plenty of suck to go around.

I don't know what it is about 3D zeldas that make them so cool but have the worst controls ever. They always have cool gimmicks and interesting items and the worst control scheme. Every 3D zelda game has involved me twirling around some item trying to go exactly where I need it to.

It's not really hard. In any other game, it would be super easy. Leave the bow facing forward, get the timing right, move the bow left and right for the blue rupees. The problem is that Nintendo sticks are terrible and there doesn't seem to be any granularity between "barely moves" and "moves too much."

Half of getting good at it again was getting used to how new controllers differed from the N64 ones. The Gerudo one gave me a lot of trouble, weirdly, when I played it with a Gamecube controller, and I'd never had any trouble with it all.

I never had issues on N64. The layout is always the same so you could just aim the bow in advance to the next rupee before it appears. They're also trivial on 3DS with gyro aiming.

I haven't played a console Zelda since Wind Waker - has playing instruments continued to be a mechanic in the Wii titles?

Obviously there's about lot of Breath of the Wild we haven't seen, but I wonder if there's any room for magic instrument shenanigans between the Sheikah Slate and its runes.

TP and SS had them but they were pretty small parts of the game compared to earlier 3D Zeldas.

It sounds like it will mostly have lush piano tones and moderate orchestration. Sounds professional enough right now.
