FFXV has so much music smushed into it. I'm not even talking about the soundtracks from every FF game, I mean that there's like half a dozen battle themes (at least). I don't know what dictates which theme plays, but I think it's by type of enemy, since every time I see an alligator-type monster I'm psyched because that means my favourite theme is going to be play (seriously it's ridiculously epic in scope given that you're fighting like three crocodiles). Then there's different music for when, in the middle of battle, your summons are ready to bring out as well, just to let you know that poo poo is about to go down. And a few different overworld themes I think.

On a similar note, Grasshopper's latest F2P brawler Let It Die has something like two hundred songs on its soundtrack, and a ton of them are by well-known Japanese bands made up just for the game. It's weirdly subliminal, because after hearing a dozen different songs from three different genres all with choruses containing the phrase "LET IT DIE" you start hearing that poo poo in your sleep.

There's an awful lot of love put into that game for something with a freemium model.

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
I don't know the alligator song the other poster is specifically referring to, but FFXV has no shortage of epic music. This is the track that plays when you're fishing and the line gets to half strength. It's a pumped up version of the regular fishing theme, which I sadly cannot find for this post.

In FF15 at one point you can have a foot race against one of your bros. He's faster than you and has more stamina so it appears there's no way to win. Until you remember you can teleport.

Cheating in a no-consequences race against a friend is the best possible thing to do.

There's a whole bunch of anime on the PlayStation store that I haven't watched but the game does a decent enough job of having Prompto ask who random characters the others already know are. The game could use some sort of encyclopaedia with a brief description of every character you meet like The Witcher 3 has so you can remind yourself who they are when you're spending so much time doing side quests that you're only seeing them once every ten hours or so.

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
AS a precursor I'll add context as to why I've mainly been playing older games - I cannot afford newer games for a bit, so I'm falling back on PS2/GC games that I've already got or can emulate, I'm not intentionally a gimmick.

I've started playing Pitfall the Lost Expedition as yet another game that Moominbiscuit got me interested in via his old vids and being a metroidvania it has the old thing of "come back with new powers", but unlike a lot of games of this type it actually marks on the map where you need to return to, so far with a number of marks matching the number of obstacles. The map zooms in to a series of nodes representing the levels with dotted lines joining them, and an incomplete level, when fully explored, looks kind of like this on the map:

code:
    |
    |
    |
 (t)O(rf)----------
The (t) represents the torch icon and the (rf) the Rising Fist icon. The O is the node itself

This tells you that there is a path that you couldn't take without the rising fist that connects to another level - we know to return there later for progress. The torch tells us that there is a secret Idol collectible that we need to return for later to get when we have the torch.

Also one node needs the torch for two different things, and it has 2 torch icons, which is very player-friendly.

Also there is a good reason to find the idols - you can trade them at the shop for permanent upgrades and new attacks, and in the journal the main character tells you that if you completely buy out the merchant you may get an extra prize, giving incentive to artifact hunt. The "Freeing the explorers" collectible gives you a special idol worth 5 normal ones for each explorer rescued.

Overall a charming game with an obnoxious main character.

Either I'm loving insane or it's possible to manually shift gears while driving in watch dogs 2 by using the pressure sensitive triggers on the ps4 controller. It was because I needed to shift gears up by pressing the trigger ever so slightly harder! Honestly it totally blew me away.

If you cast an ice spell on enemies in water in FFXV, the water will freeze and the enemies will be trapped until the ice melts. I found this out the hard way by standing in the water when I cast Blizzaga.

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
79% of the way through Pitfall: The Lost Expedition according to the save file, and honestly, I'm kinda loving it.

Despite the main characters attitude (which has been improving, and in his Journal he comes across as slightly more self-aware than in cutscenes) the other characters react to him well. Quickclaw the talking Jaguar is pretty cool, a lot of bad jokes but the game promises an interesting backstory that may recontextualise him as acting out to cover for his true feelings of lonliness due to the other cheetahs ostracizing him (Possibly due to Quickclaw being able to talk and them not considering him to be one of them anymore), and while I am on Nicole's side about Harry being a complete tool who she needs to basically put up with, he is at least trying to understand her point of view and finally empathising with her as more than a pretty face, even if only barely, so she is warming to him a little in an organic way because he recognised when he put his foot in it and apologised for the first time in the entire goddamn game.

The powerups have been inventive even if the controls are bewildering. Playing on the gamecube, the controls for the inflatable raft for crossing dangerous water are left stick paddling with left hand, right for right hand, which is loving weird but strangely engaging, same principle for climbing with the pickaxes. The pickaxes also have a really fun and funny attack where Harry can spin with them both out to counter enemies that do the same, resulting in really funny situations where everyone is spinning wildly. It's like an episode of beyblade up in here.

Although I've just got through the single hardest part of the game so far, the second boss with StClaire and his Shaman buddy followed by the scorpion temple - the hardest boss and temple so far. StClaires Shaman summons waves of bomb-throwing enemies at you, who are really fun to fight but difficult because they have unique animations - they take cover behind scenery, and if you get too close and are too slow to hit them they do a cool little flip over the box/fence that they were braced against and you basically have to chase them and try to catch them out, and the scorpion temple is a really hard puzzle fight. Basically each temple, Harry swaps bodies with it's representative animal and needs to hit his real body 4 times before it escapes. The scorpion requires you to crawl on the ceiling and walk over hatches to trigger boulders falling that will put out the torch that it directly under them, and if Harry is at the torch, stun him so you can crawl down the wall and hit him. Each time Harry get's faster so you have to try to cut him off by the final stage instead of following him, and he only needs to light 3 torches to escape and the controls are a little fiddly on the walls and ceiling so it gets really hard stunning him that last time.

spoilered for common courtesy as the game is definitely worth seeing for yourself for the gameplay, even though it has aged.

Last edit after continuing: Oh my god the mask native guys aren't actually all human. The tribes you meet early on are, but the more specialist ones with the indestructible masks that you need to stagger and the spinning guys are actually little arctic foxes that are vaguely human shaped. I noticed when one of the strong mask guys took it off to try to bash me with it :3:

This continues to be goofy and I really appreciate that the bonecharm crafting system lets you do dumb mildly overpowered crud like this.

I've been replaying Condemned 2: Bloodshot and god the enemies react to getting smacked so viscerally, it's awesome. If you've never played it, it's a first person melee game, and you've got a few types of punches and melee attacks; The heavy ones really just knock the everloving gently caress out of people and even knock teeth loose in the clouds of blood you're sending out of somebody's mouth when you hit them in the face with a brick.

Guns rule too, the gun impacts go very well with the sound design and baddies will be knocked over or stunned by a gunshot wound, even stopping to clutch at their gut in pain if you plug them in the belly.

Every headshot from any gun causing a head explosion is a little bit much though, especially when you get to play with a crossbow. I wanted to nail guys to walls by the cheek.
