I agree with this, but the ones "bullying" you shouldn't be your peers. There should be a formal system with rules and regulations where the teachers are allowed to mold you into a functional person. The way it works now you have bullies beating on weak people with no supervision and no recourse if they go too far without subjecting yourself to more intense bullying. Let teachers have absolute authority and I think we'd be a lot better off. Coddling helps nobody.

Teachers used to be allowed to, and did, beat the students with wooden rods. Is that the kind of authority you are talking about?

Bullying produces people who are timid and depressed, and people who have a chip on their shoulder and are looking for an excuse to gently caress someone up. Neither is good.

Maybe "bullying" is too strong a word. "Teasing" is more in line with what I'm thinking of. Like making fun of the kid that sucks their thumb still in first grade, not beating the poo poo out of the poor kid.

I don't think goons understand the difference between bullying someone and just mocking them. Mocking might teach someone what is socially acceptable, but bullying doesn't give a poo poo what you do in response. It doesn't matter if you stop being weird; someone will still put you down because they've learned it's entertaining.

is this because goons were bullied but also hate themselves so they rationalise it?

Eh, if I had to make an analogy here I'd say it's like when a person insists that whatever dialect they speak with has 'no accent' or is somehow more generic than others and then insists it's only other people who have true accents. Being immersed in a culture w/o any other frame of reference can really skew your judgement and can lead you into making shaky assumptions.

Well they certainly had less scripture which, coincidentally, means less terrible stuff. I mean sure it was all murder and more murder but less murder because we say so.

I was really coming more from the fact they acknowledged that other gods existed and "belonging to a different religion" meant someone was seeking the blessing of that god. There was still (self-)flagellation, human sacrifices, and ritualistic suicide, but religious violence was usually preformed internally and exclusively for ceremonial purposes.

This should be true only in an authoritative context, (e.g. the drill instructor to trainee relationship) such that there is a positive end goal or behavioral change in mind. Mere persecution or extortion for personal gratification is a societal ill that lessens all involved.

Yeah, ha. While I sincerely doubt anyone is arguing in good faith when they resort to tone policing, someone acting like an incredibly smug, abrasive prick because they have The Right Opinion is somehow even more insufferable.

My other opinion is that prog rock, nine times out of ten, isn't really rock music at all. It's just people wanking and noodling and squawking about elves and half-baked philosophy. I think the only worthwhile variety of prog rock is the really early stuff from the late 1960s and very early 1970s when it was still identifiable as jazz or R&B.

My music related opinion (that I may have posted in this thread in the past but can't remember) is that post-rock is really, really boring. It is like super lame classical music that includes rock instruments. When I hear people complimenting it, it's always stuff like "man it's so amazing and deep how there's a crescendo during the first half of the song." It's the sort of music that sounds profound and deep if you really try to get yourself into the mindset of "I bet this music is gonna be profound/deep" (or smoke weed).

I don't really mind what other people listen to, but it just rubs me the wrong way when people act like music is all deep/complex when it's the complete opposite (especially when these same people often condemn pop music for being simplistic, despite the fact that the pop music they condemn is often objectively more complex than most post-rock pieces).

Solice Kirsk posted:

Eh, not really. I think that making fun of behaviors can be useful, but not directly targeting the person him/herself (though in practice it's probably impossible to divorce the two). In practice bullying just makes people retreat into shells (and/or the internet) instead of making them change, at least with younger children.

Post-rock is pretty fun to play/jam with others but as far as listening goes I'll normally put it on as background rather than for 'serious listening'.

Meanwhile, a one-hit wonder song like t.A.T.u.'s All The Things She Said is different in some way every 4 bars, lots of recurring motifs with different instrumentation, weird structure outside of choruses and all that other stuff post-rock fans love to blather about. Except it's catchy so therefore 'unworthy'.

Definitely agree about post-rock. Every song being a crescendo that starts off soft and builds into a big ending is pretty boring to me at this point. I'd much rather hear a rock band play catchy riffs and rhythms then have to wait a whole song for the band to finally rock out.

Yeah, I actually think that the music is pretty decent as sort of background music meant to create a certain atmosphere or something; my issue is mostly with the way people interpret it.

Noisy, aggressive music isn't as popular as it deserves thanks to the social stigma surrounding enjoying it. It isn't OK to assume that every person that enjoys the heaviest metal they can find is a drug-addled loser who wants to spend his life being unemployed and getting into fights.

No, that kind of teasing just ends up with people retreating to where they're accepted and finding an internet hugbox as a more accepting community than their school peers. Teasing and bullying creates the "problem" you want to solve.
