I quite like Konnichiwa, but I also like Made in the Manor as well. I really like the manic beat going on in grime, which is why I'm sad that Durrty Goodz has gone to making straight rap :(
I have to admit I'm not very familiar with Microphone Champion (I listened to most of it for the first time tonight) but seriously what the gently caress is up with that song "Disguise"?

I mean I wouldn't say konnichiwa was bad. It was just a bit... meh. I suppose it depends on how long you've listened to Grime, if you remember Skepta from way back versus now it's all just a bit disappointing.

And Doogz does actually have a Grime release on Tru Thoughts, which seems like it could be turning into a bit of a haven for Grime artists.

Here are some releases

Finally a second tune from the elusive Laksa, with a few dubs floating around since his intial release on mistry he has been in the minds and ears of many as we anticipated his next release. Many hoped to see one of his more popular unreleased tunes contrasts on this release and I even had confirmation from a few inside sources it was to be on this release but alas it is not. Still though we are met with 2 banging tunes.

DJ Playstation can be found on beamz second release which has the fitting title "Split EP". A side featuring the very popular lofi house vibes we all have come to know while on the flip we are met with a beautiful jungle tune.

Fuckpunk's very own label owner Ossia releases a very heavyweight double LP on berceuse heroique. It comes with a great poster and as usual is very high quality which we've come to expect from BH. The tracks are banging and the versions are incredibly deep.

On a juke tip, Pearly whites is a freshly created soundcloud that released a pretty slick r&b/rap influenced juke compilation with quite a few familiar names on the list. Enjoy the juke stylings from names such as GUNDAM & Lemzly Daze, and more.

DJ Sinclair's ricky is released under keysound, which is a heavy grime instrumental..

Skepta's album Konnichiwa just won the Mercury Prize. Is it just me or was this album pretty meh? I think I only listened once.

It kinda seems like the industry is trying to boost Grime but they are totally late-comers. And it's a novelty in America, nothing sustained.

Man, Shutdown, and That's not me actually got me interested in Grime. I've tried listening to other artists and songs but the only thing I've found that I like is JME's remix of serious. Skepta's older work just sounds like trashy club music, atleast the stuff I've listened too. Someone told me to listen to Rolex Sweep cause they thought I'd like it, but nah

As an outsider it looks like an attempt to get international interest in Grime, and Skepta was on Australia's youth variety station Triple J for a bit, but it seems like there's not much else that people who like Konnichiwa would also like?

Some bits I've been listening to lately...

First up we have FaltyDL's new album Heaven Is For Quitters, out on his own Blueberry Records. Compared to his recent stuff on Ninja Tune, Heaven Is For Quitters seems to have a bit more of a introspective tone at times. Sure his wonderful glossy synth lines still glide wonderfully over the songs, but between some quasi-ambient type of things and lovely guest vocals on a handful of tracks, it's just a more downcast type of album. Probably my favourite thing on the album is a wonderful collab with μ-Ziq which just reminds me a modern, energetic twist on love on a real train.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3Gk8Ku662A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-Qy4XCfLX8

Don't Be Afraid continue to be one of their best labels out there as their dub series continues, this time with Swing Ting member Samrai and his single Khadi. The a-side is a wonderful, dubbed out stepper but it's the b-side I've been digging as JTC turns it into a slick, technoligic Detroitian jam.
https://soundcloud.com/dontbeafraid/sets/dub007-samrai-khadi

Ilian Tape do it again, this time with a new EP by Andrea. What I love about this label is their wonderful curation. Sure every artist is different and unique, but the Ilian Tape guys just seem great at pulling out the thread of similarity between them all and stitching all those different artists into one cohesive whole, which is something all the best labels I can think of are able to do (UR, Reinforced, Metalheadz, Good Looking, early Warp and Tempa etc etc)

Lobster Theremin sub-label Distant Hawaii is another label that's just on point at the moment. With just a handful of releases they've set themselves up as purveyors of immensely good sun-drenched House. This time it's an EP by Australian DJ Heure (so much good House has been coming out of Australia at the moment see the Analogue Attic label). With this cool, breezy synth lines wash up on a glistening wave of smooth laidback house beats.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd8dZjI_l0Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NGDnMhA5Hw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeAw6GHZ-xk

I've said to more than one person that the Italian scene is on the ascent again. Sure there's always been a strong output of music from Italy, but it just seems recently that - especially in the House end of the scene - that singles and EPs coming from Italy are just going from strength to strength. The latest being Minimono's Theory of Strings EP on Bosconi, a wonderful label that's been around a few years now operating from Florence (does anyone else have a strong grasp of Italian geography thanks to a youth wasted watching Football Italia on tv ?). Actually this is Theory of Strings Part 2. What was part 1 likw? Well I've never heard it, but if it's half as good as this I might just track it down! Funky, swinging House on one side while the flip gets a bit more techy.

It is a nice 12"! I've got it! You know because of the label art, it reminds me of the short-lived Reinforced offshoot Manga Beats, which also featured various Street Fighter characters on their label art. I uploaded the first release from the label to my youtube channel actually. It has Ryu on the label I think, though I only scanned in the other half the label. Take a listen!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuddG0pDAXw

What I like about Youtube is the fact you can message the uploader and request something from them if you really want, if you haven't found the thing already. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help. Fun and totally unrelated fact: subtlety is my middle name.

I got the impression that LA has a pretty healthy warehouse scene though? I have friends in LA who go out frequently and they mention at least one or two good artists playing every month. Zenker Bros just came through, I saw Rrose has a December date. In general, underground bookings seem like they're second only to NYC quality as far as what we get stateside.

With a lot of NYC bookings they come through to DC. Especially on the underground tip. I dunno if we're technically a sister city but it's nice that we get NYCs sloppy seconds with ease.

Calibre - Grow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7VpEF9_v2c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NYn1jqJdy4
Another foray of his into dubstep and slower speeds. I really like this album, it reminds me a lot of early hessle audio releases.

Karma - Terrorist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7bhjwK-2PQ

Some nice variety between the technoid dread of Cha and Vacant mind & the warm sounds of Terrorist.

Headland - Tapescho/Midnight Drive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjWRZTu9D2U
I bought this for Tapescho, but Midnight Drive has grown on me. Theyre both huge tbh

Dj Fett Burger/ Dj Sotofett - 日本行脚スペシャル
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpLua3yg_94
not related to this thread at all, I just like dj sotofett and sex tags amfibia

P Jam - Pepper Pot/ Chalice ft Champion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kwvmy71dQw
Not too big on Pepper Pot but Chalice is a banger. Silly vocal one shots, slippery sounds, skittering drums, and Champions signature wobbles.

Struktion - Kreen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqSDF8wNUpo
I discovered Struktion thru his joint EP with DjRum on Illian Tapes & when I saw this on R&S I knew Id have to buy it. Fast paced techno & breaks with a throwback sound.

Sorrow - Brawler
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9tONdWSHqE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NasXqI9fZVg
I've heard so much of Sorrow (& Asa) that a lot of his songs have started to blend together for me. That being said, I still like this EP. Fruitella is a guilty pleasure.

Schlachthofbronx - Haul & Pull Up EP1 (Feat Riko Dan / Warrior Queen)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWb_zX6OWgQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhGnAFgjGP4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb28vUHhBO4
I did not expect this from Schlachthofbronx. Everything I've heard from them before has been mostly footwork & electro sounding stuff, and then they bust out this EP with Riko and Warrior Queen. Every song is class & I've already rinsed them to death on my home set up.

Still loving his Good Club Allstars release!

I'm liking the Calibre LP too, though I picked up the CD because I'm one of those wierdos who have zero problems with CDs. And mostly because I just can't justify £40. Though I'm always complaining about the cost of physical products nowadays, because I'm just a curmudgeonly dick who just can't believe it's not 2004 anymore and why doesn't that single cost £4.99 like they used too dammit!!

Anyway the LP is good. Ten years ago it'd probably have been filled under Broken Beat. Calibre was one of the few of those 2000s D&B acts who I feel was able to take on the lower tempos well. The other main ones being the likes of Martyn and Kryptic Mindz. This LP lifts off from the platform Calibre had created when he had those Deep Medi singles a few years back.

The Struction EP is definitely a solid EP, though I did prefer the Illian tape tunes I have to say. The recent R&S release I did really like though was the Appeblim & Second Story EP, that was hot.

And funnily enough the reason I widened the scope of the thread was so things like Sotofett and all that can slip in here!

Some sad news though, I just read that Mark Fisher aka K-Punk has passed away. 10+ years ago K-Punk's blog (as well as the likes of Simon Reynolds Blissout, Woebot and a bunch of others) was really influential in how I thought about music, and in hindsight blogs like that really helped to begin to shape the weak, flabby, creative muscles I'd meekly flex when doing things like my guides. The fact that blogs like that just don't seem to be part of the general internet environment - at least to the extent there were - really just bums me out. Evolution ain't always a positive thing!
