They're in a possibly pre-rendered and/or in-editor demo. Which in SC terms means it's practically in-game or, really, has been in so long that it has already become outdated and it's about time CIG goes back to the drawing board to figure out a more modern update.

This really is the best.

It's like the fact that the original ships for sale (Aurora, 300i, etc) have all basically become hideously outdated and outclassed before the game ever even launched. They talk about things so long it's like it becomes its own reality.

Case in point - my dad's friend, normally the most phlegmatic, stable and benevolent person i can think of, got provoked by a psych evaluator into almost screaming and crying, when he was trying to get his carrying license. Which might seem like a very douchey thing to do to a person, but if just talking to a stranger for 15 minutes can get you to lose your poo poo, maybe you shouldn't be walking around with a gun?

All gun control issues aside, I'm pretty sure a properly trained person can get literally anyone to go into screaming fits after talking to them for 15 minutes. You just got to know what triggers a person, then start pushing that button.

Yes as long as the core gameplay is fun. e.g. "Lost Colony" is amazing even if its janky and ugly as poo poo.

Your chasing a whale, friend. Some game may scratch the itch but the sweet spot between "being a random cog" in Elite and a "story about me" in Privater has yet to be found.

I would suggest :

https://www.gog.com/game/darkstar_one - Simple, but fun
http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/index.htm - Complex, maybe too close to Elite for your taste
http://fractalsoftworks.com/ - 2d, need some mods to unleash its full potential
http://store.steampowered.com/app/214730/ - 2d, turn based but plenty of depth.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/2820/ (the superbox is below 10$) - The best "Not Elite" alternative.

The perfect game of this kind does not exist yet, selling the dream is what allowed SC to become such a bloated 140M$ dumpster fire.

Hope you get something fun for christmas ! Myself i will be getting a break from space by shooting tons of weird guns in Defiance http://store.steampowered.com/app/542450/.

The way they handle version numbering is a complete misdirection. Somehow everyone argues about when and which each version is hitting evocati/PTU and largely forget that they are adding do-dads instead of major features. I seriously have no idea what Star Marine has do with the final product; it's a slightly different tech demo that they can now fiddle with for all of 2017.

Weeell… not without a good competition break, at least, but that would be inefficient and costly, and the neighbours would probably be upset with the occasional grass fire you'd start. And also the constant gun fire.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this infographic a bullshit attempt to justify problems with SC's development?

I thought Alpha was the game content and feature set is essentially finished and in the build and all they are doing are fixing bugs found by internal playtesters. A beta build to me is basically the finished product as far as they can tell internally but they send it out so they can find rare bugs that only occur with specific machine configurations or are difficult to replicate. Maybe they also do some balance changes as they pull in better data from a large number of players but that's essentially a separate process from the software development since they are just tweaking weapon damage and stuff in spreadsheets.

From what I've seen Star Citizen IS pre-Alpha by conventional standards. I think the main argument revolves around if it is even past the design stage.

Not only is SC not even in alpha by conventional standards, Jared admitted it as such last year. And it's not past the design stage. There is no vertical slice, there is no overarching concept, there are no design documents. There isn't even a scope that's been defined well enough for anyone to understand it.
