I can't remember where I saw this, but a while back I read about a little girl who left food out for the crows that hung out in her back yard. The crows started bringing bits of glass and soda can tabs in exchange. My house is right on a steep hill, so the upper branches of a couple of trees are right next to my kitchen window. This means that pretty frequently when I get up to get a glass of water, there will be a few birds sitting right outside the window. Usually it's a couple of random wrens but a few days ago a cardinal landed right at the window and started chirping.
