Tangentially love & peace has a hilarious punk cover of the toothpaste jingle from why don't you play in hell, if anyone is looking for more incentive to watch it:

Finally caught up on genchat after being too busy to post for most of break.

Last movie of 2016: Rogue One (Hate Ball is right, there are only two or three actual characters, everyone else is damp Wonderbread being pushed along)
First movie of 2017: a rewatch of The Big Lebowski. Still loving great, it's so much fun that I always ignore how well-crafted and layered it is.

Chapo Trap House rules still, and I'm excited for Boogey's new podcast episode.

How the gently caress did I not find out that the fabled John Sayle's Jurassic Park 4 script had hit the internet in full until today? I feel like I'm holding an internet holy grail in my hands and I want to run away from work right now to go read it.

quote:

Read this, a 2004 article where AICN's Moriarty describes a script that John Sayles' wrote for Jurassic Park 4:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/18166

Or if you're short on time just read the money shot from it:

I want to tread lightly on what happens over the course of the rest of the film on the off chance that Mary Parent or someone at Universal is seriously going to make this thing. There’s the eight-year-old-boy side of me that thinks that a DIRTY DOZEN-style mercenary team of hyper-smart dinosaurs in body armor killing drug dealers and rescuing kidnapped children will be impossible to resist. And then there’s the side of me that says... WHAT THE gently caress ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! Nick is put in charge of training these five dinosaurs, X1 through X5, and the first thing he does is name them. “Any soldier worth his pay has a name to answer to, not a number,” he says. So we are introduced to Achilles, Hector, Perseus, Orestes, and Spartacus, each of them a specially created deinonychus, which is sort of like a miniature T-rex. They have super-sensitive smell and hearing, incredible strength and speed and pack-hunting instincts, and they have modified forelegs, lengthened and topped with more dextrous fingers, as well as dog DNA for increased obedience and human DNA so they can solve problems well. All of this is topped off with a drug-regulating implant that can dose them with adrenaline or serotonin as the situation demands.

And go ahead. Look at the calendar. We’re a long, long way from April 1st right now.

And now, you too can read what surely must be the greatest script never made:

Perhaps it's in the nature of television. Just waves in space.
First movie of 2017: Fences

I can see where some of the criticism is coming in the fact that it feels like a Broadway show put on screen. Denzel doesn't really put too much direction into the settings, and there aren't many memorable shots (there are definitely a couple). But the characters and translation of a fantastic play are done so well and played so expertly that I can't fault it for slightly boring direction. Denzel and Davis are absolute powerhouses in this, and these might be the best performances of their careers. It's two and a half hours long, but those two, and even the supporting cast are so magnetic with their portrayals of these broken people that the time flies by. Excellent movie.

Last movie: Rogue One
First movie: Swiss Army Man

It's weird going from something that's pure plot and spectacle to something that's pure character. I haven't talked enough about how Swiss Army Man is my absolute favorite movie of last year (still might make a threat about it someday) but Rogue One just sort of...exists. I think I'm finally wiped out on enormous action movies? Is this possible???

Nah, Zizek already writes in a way where you can't not hear his voice, weird pauses, and coke sniffles while reading. In comparison, SMG is the stuffy academic who plays a clip of Zizek as part of his lecture, then goes back to droning on about jouissance in the Smurfs.

Although I still hear him as Richard Attenborough.

Gareth Edwards does some weird but unique character development stuff. It's almost entirely visual and mostly subtle but it's there and I like it. Rogue One is a lot better on a second watch.
