Hey so I picked up Witcher 3 base game on the Steam sale. I wasn't sure if I liked the game so I didn't want to pick up the GOTY edition. Is there still a lot of content in the base game itself without the addition of those two DLC/expansions?

You can spend anywhere between 80-120 hours on the base game, you'll be fine.

My coffee warned me about it.

There were people in this very thread that finished the game in 45 hours (they claimed they still did lots of sidequests) but that's close to a record.

I think it was cool, no matter how much she idealizes a life outside the constraints of aristocracy, she can't magically get rid of the marks of her upbringing, and can't function among common folk.

What makes her a nazi is that she literally doesn't think nordlings are humans. She's not snobby, she's a racist nationalist who thinks it's acceptable to order your hired help to murder peasants.

That's why you can't sleep with her, Geralt wouldn't touch her with Lambert's dick.

That seems to be a trait of nobility in general, to be fair. And its the nordlings who have non human ghettos and semi regular pogroms yet Geralt was happy dicking around with many of them.

That's called being pre-WW1 aristocracy. The Nazis didn't invent or codify any of that, she is literally a top poo poo feudal courtier that has been raised from day 1 to think that most of the world's population exists to serve her. She doesn't make any great overtures about loyalty to the state or ethnic cleansing, as I recall, and she doesn't scapegoat religion or a specific ethnicity (which the Northern Realms all did re: the Elves and anything not the Holy Fire for Redania) as being the cause of the world's problems, either.

Nilfgaard is literally the Roman Empire. Their soldiers are even armed similarly.

Forget how most of the events in the Witcher world are just slightly tweaked events that actually happened to Poland and Europe in the 20th century. Aedirn's downfall mirrors Germany and Russia dividing Poland, while Temeria is occupied France.

Yeah, ok, she's not literally a nazi, but she's still a goddamned monster geralt has no interest in.

gently caress, it's like you can't even use nazi as shorthand for racist nationalist anymore without someone popping in to say, "Actually..."

Though I agree that authorship doesn't mean a monopoly on interpretation. But it does mean that we can say, "No, Geralt wouldn't gently caress this woman."

EDIT: I will also point out that Witcher 3 is not a historical document. It was written and created by humans living in the early 21st century about a world that never existed until it was invented by a cranky polish man in the late 20th century.

2 is tonally very different from 1 and 3, but it has a great atmosphere. It essentially works as an extended prologue to the global events of 3, showing how the war with Nilfgaard was manipulated through a huge web of deception. There is a ridiculously complicated power play between so many different groups who each think they are in control of the situation, when in reality nobody is, and it all spirals out of control into an utter shitshow of backstabbing and open warfare. It's great. And in the middle of it all, not really caring what the gently caress happens to everyone else, is Geralt, trying to save his friends, his neck, and recover his memories.

One thing you should be aware of is that the game has quicktime events, but no hint that there actually are any in the game. They just sort of show up, and absolutely will ruin your day the first few times you play.

When I say the game is tonally different, I mean that it really ramps up the fairy tale aspects of the Witcher moreso than the other games. The first and third games are surprisingly grounded despite having so many fantastical elements flying around willy nilly. The second game has this eerie atmosphere about it, like you are always on the edge of something vast. The forest outside Flotsam is an old growth prehistoric forest taken to the extreme. There is a battlefield that looks more like a world war 1 bloodbath than a medieval battleground due to out of control magic. You visit an ancient city built by lizard people from the dawn of time. There are so many weird places in the game, and it hits on one aspect of the Witcher that doesn't get explored enough. Humans are still the newest species on the continent, and they are still encroaching on lands untouched for centuries. Witcher 1 and 3 are set in the lands they have settled long ago, while Witcher 2 is on the frontier borders of human influence, and the squirrels living there don't take kindly to their rear end in a top hat neighbours.

More than any other series, I'm so happy this one has turned out so well. I picked up Witcher 1 soon after it came out and was just sucked into its world. It's an oppressive world that somehow doesn't leave the player feeling like a poo poo. And the jump of quality can't be overstated between 1 and 2. At the time when it came out, it was the game I pushed on people saying this is what Next Gen graphics look like. And it was so cool to just be this little nobody in the middle of great events that you really had no control over. You could maybe change the tone of events but that was it at best, if you even wanted to bother. And as good as the jump was between 1 and 2, the jump between 2 to 3 was just as immense. To the point where after beating it completely at twice and working on a third playthrough it beat out Mass Effect as my favorite game of all time. I can only imagine what it would feel like to play 1 blind, skip 2 and jump right to 3.

The book series starts each chapter with an excerpt from an in universe manuscript, often detailing events that happened long after the story being told, but used to provide context. It's how people know that canonically, Morvran Voorhis becomes the next Emperor after Emhyr dies.
