e/ I've had mine for a number of years now, just finished replaced the jack after snapping it in an aeroplane, also replaced the headband and one of the cups that burst.

really like them they fit perfectly now and still sound excellent.

Audio Technica M40s, Philips SHP9500s, Status Audio CB-1s, Sony MDR V6... several others probably. Never heard AKGs, Shures, Grados, or Beyers though.

The HD280 has a very early rolloff in bass which made them, for me at least, the most clinical and lifeless headphones I'd ever heard. Low mids are also poor on them. Their shape really got on my nerves. It's like they're designed to fit a square-shaped robot head. I found the top band extremely uncomfortable. Most good full-size headphones nowadays have detachable cables. The HD280s are an ancient headphone and have a permanently attached 10 foot curly cable.

They're $99. There's no reason to get them. Sennheiser's own HD598 is just $140, and for the difference in price the difference in quality is pretty significant. The 598s are open, more comfortable, have a detachable cable, and sound better.

Use: music, gaming, netflix, that sort of thing. For use at home, so I'm not too worried about noise getting in or out. I've got glasses so if anything is notably uncomfortable, that would be out.

It is. The 950s are on par sound quality wise with a pair of non noise canceling bose. Provided you don't turn on the "make everything a muddy mess" feature.

At work I use a pair of JVC HA-SZ2000 headphones fed by a Fiio E17 Alpen. The Alpen is connected to my computer thru usb. I'm starting to notice more and more digital noise over the usb connection. Only other audio output possible that I know of from the computer is the front or rear 3.5mm stereo outputs. Any advice on how I can get the best sound with what I got? Or anything I can do about the intermittent digital noise?

I've tried different usb cables and different ports. I went from using a long usb cable connected to front usb port to a short usb cable connected to a rear usb port.

Is optical input an option? I was only able to resolve USB noise by completely electrically decoupling my computer from the DAC.

At the moment no. No optical outputs. Unless audio coming from a display port output pulled from my monitor would have less noise? That sounds like a long shot just typing it out though.

I'm not audiophile and all the music I listen to is streamed from spotify or google play music. These sound great. I used to have a pair of sony xb950bt and the bass response is close. No skipping and you can run a single earphone. Running a single earphone is great because I'm a cyclist and I like to keep one ear open to listen for traffic. I don't think they have a roll off in bass, if I read the specs correctly they have a lower frequency response than the HD589s, going down to 8hz vs 12 for the 598s.

I'm listening to some Loefah on DMZ now and the bass seems solid as hell, got them plugged into my Rane mixer and they're handling it all like champs.

When listening to some Carlos Paredes earlier they sounded wonderful as well.

I'm a big fan, what can I say. Definitely do not feel the need to replace them, and very glad I took the time to fix them.

The cable stuff is true, and they are stiff initially but I've had mine for years so they're snug and v comfy now.

If they're ever on sale I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.

I watched that Bill Withers documentary Still Bill and saw that he used them. Good enough for me haha!

I should post up my full requirements in case there's an obvious choice in the matter:

Budget - 100-150$ USD range
Source - PC with Headphone jack.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Circumaural ideally. IEMs are a no-go.
Usage - Primarily gaming, some music. Most Importantly: Needs to be comfortable to wear with glasses for long durations.
Past Headphones - NVX XPT100, extremely comfortable, I really enjoyed these but the headband section that held the cup broke. Something with this style of cups or level of tightness would be great.
- Sennheiser HD 598 Cs, these were much too tight, became very uncomfortable with glasses after about an hour or so of use.

So I'm seeing lots of recommendations for models such as ATH-M50x, ATH-AD700X, etc, can anyone who wears glasses comment on what is/isn't comfortable?

I've also seen comments on reddit about replacement pads such as these for various models, I dunno if that'd be closer to the style i'm looking for or what but I'm not against trying something like that.

If you don't care about bass, the Phillips SHP9500's are really good and really comfortable, and easily made into a gaming headset with a v-moda boom pro (if you play multiplayer). Have zero issues with them as a glasses wearer. The only con is that you can't change the pads out (not that you need to, but if you had a pad you liked you won't be able to use it)

I just retired my pair to be PS4 headphones now that my Mayflower V1's came in today (so nice!)

Budget - £500 ($600)

Isolation Requirements - Do you need isolation? Not fussed
Preferred Type of Headphone - On ear
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced
Past Headphones - This will be my first
Preferred Music - Audio from Blu-rays (Concerts and films) iPhone music (Rock, some classical)

So I've been looking at the hype around these headphones, announced at CES last week.

http://eu.audio-technica.com/headphones/over-ear/ATH-DSR9BT

First off, am I crazy for paying that much for wireless headphones when the same amount would get me much more bang for the buck with a wired model?
Secondly, I can't actually see how I'd use it with my amp, given the only connectivity is Bluetooth and USB.

Isolation Requirements - Not really needed, using mainly at home
Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear or earbuds
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced is best
Past Headphones - I normally just use the included iPhone earbuds. I went through 3 pairs of the lanyard headsets for the iPod nano
Preferred Music - Rock and hip hop

I work from home and I'm on my phone for 8-10 hours a night talking and listening to music. Looking for a multipoint Bluetooth headphones that can go at least 10 hours between a charge. Don't really care about noise isolation or much else, just the battery life and comfort factor, really

Thanks for the continued suggestions guys, figured I'd throw out an update. I gave my Senns a while longer, stretching them when not in use, but they just never really got comfortable for me. Even after they lightened up on my glasses, the speaker itself was digging into my ear a little bit (one of my ears sticks out a lot more than the other, it's annoying and silly looking).

So, I returned them and swapped them for the ATH-AD700X. First though: Actually too loose, they kept trying to slide down my head and rest on the top of my ears. But very easily fixed by putting an oversized hair tie on the top bands to gently add a tiny bit of extra tension, now they fit pretty much perfect. It's ... kind of silly, but it doesn't even look out of place, and I don't even notice it's there.
My only other very minor complaint is that the material of the pads is not quite as nice and smooth as I'd like, as the pads are very big and touching my beard so they get a tiny bit scratchy I looked if there were any nice replacement pads that were inexpensive and not hard to install, but couldn't really find anything solid, and it's so minor I don't think I'll really worry about it.

So I'm thinking I'll keep these then. Any recommendations for a mic for these? Since the cord does not appear to be detachable, and I'd prefer to not physically attach something to the cups, maybe something that attaches to the existing cord?

Yeah, I know what you mean about the earpads. The issue with the AD--X's, is that when Audio Technica refreshed them, they cheaped out on a few things. The pads, the air wings and the cord. The originals were a lot better quality. You can get pad replacements on eBay if it's really bothering you.

As for a mic, you can either get a desktop mic or a ModMic 4 (the 5 is even pricier for an already overpriced product)

Any idea if it's hard to replace the pads?

E: Oh, AT does sell replacement pads on their site as well, but it looks like the AD700X pads are out of stock. Can't tell what material they are made out of from the page though. I bet some of the other model pads would work ... like these are for the ATH-A700, are these the original style cups you were talking about?

The AKG 7XX headphones are extremely comfy.

That is the meat of my trip report because my Schiit stack came in today, but no USB or RCA cables, so those will be in on Thursday.

Even though they're still made of plastic like my ATH M40X and Sennheiser HD 518s, they have a much nicer construction (durr they're way more expensive, but it's my only reference) and feel.

The only issue I have with the geometry is that my ears kinda bump up on the foam covering behind which the drivers rumble. Hopefully it's not a problem when I can actually drive them.

I also really like the way they stay on heads, the whole mechanism is neat, although I do have my suspicions about the longevity of the elastic that keeps things in the right place.
