Hi thread, here are my favourite songs of the year, enjoy :)

https://play.spotify.com/user/itsarus/playlist/18rmgBMfvwBXC1ydgJ21jt (I hope that link works because I don't think I've shared a public playlist yet on Spotify, I usually use Google Music but its sharing is poo poo)

...also I couldn't stop at just my top 10 or anything because there was so much good stuff this year so I stopped at 25 but made sure to not duplicate any bands!!

Top album of the year for me was a tough choice, I absolutely loved Wintersleep's The Great Detachment (and Metropolis, featured on that playlist linked above, is probably my #1 song of the year) but I think my top overall album is Junk from M83. It was very different from their previous work and definitely stirred some controversy, but I immensely enjoyed every single track and think it's their best yet. Seeing them play live was a standout moment this year too, holy cow, just incredible.

Jumping on the 2016 songs of the year bandwagon.

Weekender are featured twice because they rock and Val Hollie released Siberian Summer in Oct 15 but I only discovered it in 16 and played it all year so...

Considering they have a whopping 1,240 likes on Facebook, I'd venture to guess most of us who post in this thread had never heard of them, but I do see that they opened for Destroyer early last year, so hell, checking them out.

Assuming my surgery this week goes well I'm going to see Tokyo Police Club in Brooklyn in a few weeks. Checked out the opener, Charly Bliss, and they're pretty fun! I'll def check them out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZPKkvNY23g

Also, somehow I only just found out Holy Ghost! and Classixx are playing MHOW next weekend, of course it's already sold out. What a loving show that'd be.

I believe they were originally booked to play Terminal 5 back in October but cancelled it "due to unforeseen circumstances" (probably didn't sell enough tickets). They're playing two nights at MHoW and only one night is sold out.

classixx's last album was on heavy rotation during the summer (good album to overwatch by, it turns out) and i'm happy to hear they're opening, even though i don't imagine they have much of a live show

First new stuff from James Merc--- excuse me, "The Shins" in like five years

http://www.npr.org/sections/allsong...ontent=20170105

Between the cheesy synth, falsetto parts and background "Blah blahblahblah" vocals, I think this kinda sucks poo poo.

Are Pixies worth seeing live these days? I absolutely love their pre-breakup stuff but I don't wanna pay a hundred bucks to see them play a set of mostly Indie Cindy and Head Carrier.

To be fair that's NZ dollars, so $70 US.

Having seen them for free last year I would've paid maximum $35 for the experience. I paid $45 for balcony seats on the Doolittle tour in 2011 and it was well worth it, but without Kim and with a bunch of mediocre new songs slipped into the set it's really only for diehards.

I've been listening to Active Bird Community, and they're pretty good. Garage-rocky retro-stuff. They're not going to change the world, and there's nothing new to their sound, but they seem to have a little more to them than just The Strokes: Rebirth. Their faster songs are better than the more wistful "last-song-at-prom" stuff they try to do.

What's amazing about the Shins is that you can pinpoint the exact moment they stopped being good: the sixth track on Wincing The Night Away. Everything up to that moment is gold - I'd even argue the first five tracks on Wincing are the band's best.

A Comet Appears is good, but the back half of Wincing is really forgettable. It's not awful, but nobody's ever been like "Oh, the Shins? Yeah, I love Girl Sailor!"

But Sleeping Lessons through Red Rabbits are all amazing. Sleeping Lessons is my favorite Shins track.

Whenever I venture to the indie side of my music taste these are some of the tunes I like to listen to. I'll _try_ not to just make this a link dump but that's kind of what I do.

Asgeír's from iceland, sort of electronic-y indie folk?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weyENZESVL4 - Going Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-dHIkF_lO4 - King and Cross
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA3MIbAZ_as - cover of Milky Chance's Stolen Dance

Just love Florence + the Machine too. Kind of hard to pin down a single genre for this, i guess indie pop/rock?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv2DSmy3Tro - Stand by Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCM8Qf3eGMQ - Third Eye
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9v8jLBrvug - Ship to Wreck

Lucius is also really chill and good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACBwXIzQou8 - Go Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej1xxCuWhXc - Wildewoman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F46geMRLUjY - Almost Makes Me Wish For Rain

lastly MisterWives
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBrOwiHO-5w - Reflections
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4ocz-fLSpI - cover of Vance Joy's Riptide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iets6iLm3QY - Our Own House

...aaand song dump, sorry but I don't tend to be wordy about music

It's a piece of JUNK!
No YouTube link for this, but I'm really into the debut release by Jonathan Allen. I'd describe it as slightly Police-influenced modern synth-rock. Maybe a little Tame Impala in there too. You can listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp:
http://jonathanallen.bandcamp.com/album/room-of-mirrors

I heard about this by way of Mutemath -- the lead singer/songwriter of MM produced this one, and they also go way back. (Allen was the original fill-in bassist for MM in concert, and they also worked together on other obscure projects such as Club of the Sons and Macrosick.)

I did because Bonobo's been consistently great for the last several years, but boy was that album boring as gently caress outside of like 2 or 3 songs.

I sure as hell didn't expect to like a new Flaming Lips album in 2017, although I'll fully admit that the lyrics are garbage and I liked it in spite of that (mostly because of the weird as hell production).
