Turns out I passed the PNQ! Been posting in this thread for four years, and tried the FSOT 4 times, so it's a big thing for me. And kind of extremely intimidating.

I ended up failing the PNQs. I wonder if it's because one of the references was a contractor I've worked regularly with for 3 years, and whether they counted that as an "employee" I have charge over which would disqualify me. Unfortunately the email's language didn't indicate anything either way.

Well drat. I got two emails today. The first email was from BEX letting me know that I passed the QEP and was being invited back to the OA for the fourth time. The second email about two hours later was from the registrar offering me an invitation to join the March A-100. Hope to see some of you guys in some obscure bar in Madagascar or Suriname or something! Thank you ALL for your encouragement and insights. This. Is. Happening!

I joined the Yahoo group but the way it's set up is terrible. I've got my OA in a month, so I'd love any tips as well

Shageletic posted:Went through OA four times? Got any tips? Already bought a book that partially covers it and am planning on joining the Yahoo group about it. I've gone through the OA three times and have passed each module at least once. My honest advice? 1. The official study guide is a gold mine of information. It tells you what is measured and when. 2. Practice at least one CM exercise, and complete the memo in 60 minutes. You will be severely pressed for time when doing the real thing in 90 minutes. 3. Remember that the goal of the GE is to work together to find a solution, not to advance your own solution as if it's a competition. 4. If you bomb one module, block it out of your mind and focus on the remaining modules. 5. View the other candidates as colleagues, not competitors. 6. If you join a study group, make sure the group offers substantive constructive criticism. Lots of group members just want to say "you did a good job" because they don't want to hurt your feelings. 7. Participate in the online information session hosted by the DIR. 8. Make sure you know where the assessment center is and that you have an alternate means of getting there. 9. You never know what is being monitored or evaluated when you walk into the assessment center. 10. Show that you can do the job and that you are someone others would like to do the job with. Good luck!

That's excellent advice. I'd add to get a good night's sleep, and don't "try" to pass. Relax and enjoy the experience in as authentic manner as possible. zzonk, I had a similar set of emails, only I got my A-100 invite a few days before my second OA invitation. Looking forward to working with you.

Good advice posted by zzonk.zzonkmiles posted:I've gone through the OA three times and have passed each module at least once. My honest advice? If you don't do anything else, remember these. My OA group gelled really well and just crushed the group exercise, 5 out of 7 of us passed the OA. The proctors were all kind of shocked.

As a (former) State guy from Nevada, I have sent so many angry letters to Dean Heller. His stock reply always includes the phrase "this is just going to be an issue where we don't see eye to eye" or something like that.

I'm not really sure how or who to ask, but does the US Foreign Service take medical personnel? I'm a pharmacist desperately trying to escape from retail hell and have heard that there is a small sector for base pharmacists and such. It seems interesting, but I'm afraid that it's something you really need to know the inside baseball to avoid getting screwed.

Go to this link: https://careers.state.gov/work/foreign-service/specialist/career-tracks In addition to Foreign Service Officers, the Foreign Service hires Foreign Service Specialists, including four types of medical personnel: Medical providers (NP-PA), regional medical officers, psychiatrists, and medical laboratory scientists. Unfortunately, it looks like none of those positions are currently accepting applications.

If it's set up like the Reagan cuts, it will also affect anyone hired after the election. Like, for example, the specialist class that started today.
