One of my favorite aesthetics in games came about in the PSX era, when games moved into 3D and had to adopt to new storytelling opportunities. There was a split at this point: some games opted for modest (or downright minimalist), in-engine cutscenes. For bigger companies who had the budget for it, they went whole hog and produced CG FMVs trying to mimic actual movies. If there was all this room on the new disc, they wanted to use it. While ambitious, the technology to produce fully animated polygonal characters was pretty rough, and the resultant videos have a very bizarre, plastic and alien look. I really love this style, it has a very unnerving affect. Some games utilize it well (horror games in particular) and some are strange failures, but it was all a cool experimental period. My favorite part of playing games from this period is stumbling on bizarre cutscenes. Some of my favorites:

FFVIII - Squall and Rinoa in Space - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F78Dhi3V40
Parasite Eve - The Opera - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDIAk8yZlVE starts at 1:52
Silent Hill - Opening Montage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNY6hviXRh4

Of all the retro sensibilities in gaming, this particular look has been pretty strongly extinct, because it is practically impossible to really emulate in a modern context. There won't really be an endless stream of indie decks able to produce motion captured FMV that looks like this, and modern AAA developers have perfected the tech to a much more refined look. Lets share some awesomely weird CGI FMV

This is my poo poo. Especially the second one, with the really overwrought vocals over the eurotrash beat and methodically edited images of really big guns exploding poo poo in between cuts of vaguely Cyber landscapes...incredible! I made this thread because I always associated this look with the square games of the period since they were at the forefront of the scene with their own huge animation team, but I started playing Devil Summoner today and saw some awesome hacking scenes where the camera zoomed in on a computer screen and then it was really dumb CGI tunnel shots of inside blue cables filled with demons and such and realized "Oh of course, Atlus was definitely doing this as well" but since all the games were japanese only Ive never really seen any of them

FFVII is a way way better game but I think FFVIII has my fave cutscenes. The art design of that game makes zero sense but you can tell they put a lot of effort into every element of the game. It's a high octane mess

I love absolutely everything about how crazy rear end FFVIII is, which was cemented when after the above Squall and Rinoa in Space scene, this Faye Wong (FFVIII original) song kicks in, lyrics and all, while they make out in a spaceship cockpit.

Its a shame that 8 has the bar none the worst mechanics out of the entire series

The closest relative to this aesthetic was the cutscenes in X-2, with this one:

I love the FMVs in the original Blood Omen. Clunky early CG and loads of overacting.
