Can anyone link me to some well written articles about Theistic satanism and black metal? Idk too much about the ideology of the whole black metal scene, but it seems like contemporary bands are actually religiously satanic, but older bands tended to use so called satanic imagery as a mark of like outsider status and rejection of Christianity. Am I wildly off the mark, or is this a real trend? Link some articles or provide your own insights, please. Religious satanism seems incredibly bizarre to me

I don't think you'll find many well written articles about this stuff from an outsider's perspective, probably the best way to find out more would be to try reading band interviews(the bardo methodology rec is a good one) or zines that deal in this subject matter in particular. For example, there's a zine called The Sinister Flame(put out by the label of the same name that released the Domains album) that is specifically focused on left hand path satanism, and that has interviews with a variety of different metal people. There's also a few things on the internet, for example here's a document that someone has uploaded to scribd about the temple of the black light, which some of those swedish anti cosmic guys have been involved in. Also, while it's a much bigger trend than it used to be, there's always been some bands into this kind of satanism around. Xantotol from Poland for example were formed in 1991, and they were very serious about it..

david crosby posted:

This site is a real treasure, thanks. Just read the interview with the main guy behind Vassafor, when they do shows they have 100+ dead rats on stage, which they disguise the scent of with incense. The incense only lasts half the show though lol.

They did that when I saw them, and one of the other bands playing that night also threw blood at the audience, so the venue had an interesting smell by the end of the night.

You might also find this old interview with Deathspell Omega helpful: http://ezxhaton.kccricket.net/interview.html. Their take on theistic Satanism is rather atypical (to the point where people wrote angry negative reviews on Metal Archives about Si Monumentum... calling it Christian music), but definitely interesting, and that interview is about as straight-forward as it gets with DsO.

Thanks for the help, y'all. The first time I'd read about a band who took their Satanism like religiously was Deathspell Omega (I think it was that article deadking posted, which it's nice to have again}. DsO are so popular that I'd wondered if they lead to this 'flowering' of legit theistic satanism, but reality is always more complex. Anyway it's a fascinating and stupid subject.

as if all this was something more
than another footnote on a postcard from nowhere,
another chapter in the handbook for exercises in futility
I remember someone trying to start a forum/zine centered around this kind of thing, the religiosity of certain strains of black metal. Apparently the zine, Second Heart, is gone from the web, but the (tumbleweed-strewn) forum is still there. I recall there being a cool Abigor interview, at the very least -- but now I can't find that either.

Also, to my understanding, Semjaza of Thy Darkened Shade is a good interview subject.

And then there was that Hideous Gnosis thing that I won't even pretend to understand.

Single person or duo bands seem to be making all the music I've liked this past while.

In the ambient space black synth metal genre, I'm loving the latest from the duo Mesarthim (as well as all their previous stuff):
https://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/album/type-iii-e-p
I love how their sound progressed to this.

And in the atmospheric experimental cold dark ambient Italy black metal genre is another duo called Lorn with a recent release I've been repeatedly playing, too.

One of the best Rhinocervs releases, RH-07, is being re-released on vinyl through Final Agony this Friday.

Only 333 copies because, you know, kvlt reasons. So get in there fast if you want it.

It's not up there yet, but here's the link to the US webstore.

I caught the Mayhem/Inquisition/Black Anvil tour last night (thanks, Kuma's!). It was pretty excellent and also nice and efficient for a metal show (over in three hours flat).

I thought I would miss Black Anvil but I got out of work early and caught the majority of their set. I'm kind of annoyed I didn't know about them before last week, because I really dig As Was and the performances from that were really fun. Good mix of black and heavy metal.

Inquisition are by far my favorite of the three bands and were easily the best in my opinion. I wasn't sure how their sound would translate live with just the two of them on stage but they had great atmosphere and stage presence, plus, you know, killer riffs. Dagon set up mics on either side of the stage so he could really play the crowd in what I imagine is a large venue for an Inquisition show. Command of the Dark Crown was particularly nasty.

Mayhem, if you haven't heard, are playing De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas in full on this tour and that's it. I thought they were pretty good but I wasn't in love with their performance, mostly because of the sound. Attila was buried in the mix (it got a little bit better after Funeral Fog) and the snare just sounded weird. But they certainly achieved the cold, foreboding atmosphere of the album, even if all the fog and the fans blowing on full blast was a bit much. It would've been nice to actually see the band besides Necrobutcher for most of the show, especially since Attila goes through the effort of all that makeup. You couldn't even see Hellhammer's drum kit for much of the show.

It is however a busy time here right now and we're currently working with some really interesting creations that will see daylight during the beginning of next year:

DRAUGURINN - Myrkraverk, CD
PANPHAGE - Storm, CD/LP <-- Buy this if you don't have it when it comes out.

I was hoping against hope but Inquisition never made it to Canada, this is the second loving time. I might as well just go to their Seattle shows or something instead.

Now I'm stuck with a $30 ( :canada: ) ticket that I only ever bought to see the one band that isn't gonna be there.

I never liked Mayhem except for maybe Funeral Fog in the early 90s, and Black Anvil is OK I guess but doesn't really strike a "must see" vibe to me.

Trying to decide if it is worth the effort now and am coming up short. Is there a compelling reason to see Mayhem live other than just to say "I've seen Mayhem"? Does Attila do any crazy poo poo like Dead did, like cutting himself on stage or otherwise being a maniacal gently caress?
