They're appealing, though. This will probably go on for a couple more years. Also, Oculus was found innocent of stealing trade secrets from ZeniMax. The other side wanted up to 6 billion $. Looks like some greedy assholes trying to get a nice payout. And since Oculus is appealing, they still won't be seeing the money for years to come.

They actually had one of the major developers for oculus, that used to work for Zenimax (Carmack) admit that he took code he was working while at zenimax and used it on the oculus SDK. Part of the 500m that was awarded was based on that copyright infringement.

The Fantasy setting was an utter pisstake of Tolkein originally, with Dwarves being borderline alcoholics that know how to hold a grudge. Second edition came with the 'Battle of Ork's Rift', which is a play on the events portrayed in the film 'Zulu'. The 'Empire' was largely based around the Holy Roman Empire with various other flavors of medieval thrown in. Orcs Iz Orcs.

The Far future version was much the same; I have the first printing of WH40K that I had on pre-order for fricking months and it's filled with sci-fi tropes, turning up the silly to the max.

Ansell's takeover then tipped us hard into 'Realms of Darkness' territory and a new world of tit-demons that would hold sway until a board revolt and effectively a corporate takeover which wanted to concentrate on extracting cash from nerds. Chaos got a huge buff during this time.

The corporate takeover started to throw more concentration into spessh marines, while neglecting other lines. Then they started with bigger kits, and rules for those kits (Apocalypse rules tend to require around $120/unit of three tanks), before killing off the Fantasy line due to a lack of sales.

It's been interesting watching the fortunes of the company over time, as they've always seemed so drat abusive to their customers, but drat it if they didn't produce an interesting set of worlds.

Slaanesh is going to get killed off, though. You can have a skull God, but not tit monsters.

They can take Noise Marines over my dead body.

Here's my own recollection of history...

Before Derek was on the scene, people like Beer4TheBeerGod were already doubting the project was possible, and actively posting about it being junk.

Now I don't believe the whole "it's a scam" came up before Derek though, he was involved by then.

But even without Derek, I think we'd all be at the same place today, though probably with less mass comedy and there'd be no hate forum on reddit dedicated to him.

Unfortunately Derek existing or not existing in the games timeline doesn't make it suddenly be great. Star Citizen would still be in the same condition it is now. Really though, it might be in worse condition today without Derek, because no doubt Chris has spent many hours yelling at people to get more done just to prove Derek wrong. In a comically round about fashion, Derek's involvement has probably helped Star Citizen be a better game.

That and the fact that it was when my first blog went live in July 2015, and the media [shockingly] made it headlines, that the drama really took off. Naturally, the CIG response to it was what set the tone for the revelation of just how hosed up things truly were at CIG. Then The Escapist happened. And suddenly, the emperor was running around butt nekid; before eventually settling down to write an 8hr long diatribe which did even more harm.

Make no mistake, it's a massive scam and they're never - ever - going to recover from what's now been set in motion.

It is the 41st millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor’s will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Eisenhorn is an Imperial Inquisitor doing Inquistiony things and is quite a good intro to the setting. The Night Lords are traitor space marines who are inhuman monsters.

You are mostly talking about the Games forum Star Citizen threads which were true believers up until 2015 or so. People could express some doubts but most people were bounced out of those threads with probations if they disturbed the flock of idiot goons with trolling.

I think Derek getting buttmad coincided with the collapse of the hugbox here finally allowing open mocking without moderator reprisal but there are threads in the gas chamber from 2012/2013 making fun of those goons/star citizen.

Thank you for the correction, friend. I have admittedly not been madly following this thing until it became a colossal disaster with people being mistreated left and right. So I was on it I think maybe half a year after the Kickstarter? I don't know. :)
