There was a rumour that they originally wanted Gwendolin Christie for the part.

The actress they have was a boxer, and pretty physically huge, I like that they did the arm wrestling scene to emphasise it.

I image searched her to see what she looks like and now I am privy to the knowledge that there is someone with a fetish for photoshopping actresses so they are giants. deviantart doesn't disappoint.

I'm sad to see that the AV Club seems to have dropped coverage of The Expanse for its second season (unless they are really late posting about it). Whoever reviewed the first season didn't really seem to get the series all that much, its a shame they could not find anyone else. It also did not even rate an honourable mention in their 2016 Best of TV lists.

It's ridiculous that they can't bother to cover what is arguably one of the best sci-fi series on TV right now, while continuing to cover crap like "Legends of Tomorrow". (Actually, I have never seen a single second of Legends of Tomorrow, it might be great, but how many superhero shows do we need?)

Agreed.

I've always found Amos interesting. There is "family" and there is "not-family". If you're "not-family" then you are a threat or not a threat. If you are a threat, you are made not a threat and the easiest way to do that is to just kill you.

It's a very sparse decision tree he uses to deal with other people.

I also love how he appears simple but never stupid.

Those eyes on Chatham, goddamn.

I have to say one thing that's coming across in the show that didn't quite come across so clearly in the books is just why Naomi and Amos ended up partnered as they are. [Book Spoiler, Nemesis Games] Amos is basically a replacement son for her.

That miller stare down though, that's the fire i was referring to with the other new girl. You can see it with Amos, you get it.

I can deal with Bobbie being a 4 foot tall badass who's an angel of death in power armor and a ruthless tactical wizard but I just can't deal with her being strong enough to hand wrestle a power armor suit or whatever. She isn't even muscular.

I'm sorry I know this is nitpicky and maybe even a touch misogynistic but... #NotMyBobbie.

Edit: to clarify, I don't actually give a drat and it's an ok casting I just think that particular bit was too goddamn silly.

Editx2: and of course she's 6 foot tall and I'm a moron who should not make judgement calls based on watching 20 minutes of an episode right before I go to bed.

Though I still think no one should be able to hand wrestle a power armor suit!

Fun Shoe

Based on the first two episodes, Frankie Adams wasn't really living up to my image of Bobbie as basically The Rock in a wig, but given she's hunched over here, she's actually kind of enormous. Once she starts interacting with the main cast members instead of other Martian marines, there's lots of camera tricks they can use to play up her physicality, too.

Also: Frankie Adams. Bobbie Draper. How did I not notice how perfect that is until now.

Good directing can go a long way to properly establishing her as Imposing, and I would not say that the directing on these first two episodes was very good other than the entirely-CGI ship fights. Why is the camera almost always eye level on her?

Well it didn't even take that much camera trickery and CGI to make Tom Cruise imposing.
I'm sure they will manage it with Frankie.

Bobbie and Avasaralah actually aren't even introduced until the 2nd book. We're still only about 3/4 of the first book in the show. The interesting thing though is that they're not moving up their storylines. They're just showing what they were up to prior to their first introductions in the book.

Goddamn, this just shows how smartly SyFy has been playing this then. Shohreh Aghdashloo is, hands down, one of the best parts of the show and I couldn't have imagined Season 1 without her if they tried to hold off like the books.

If you want something done, do it yourself!
I thought the arm wrestling scene was a good way of establishing how strong the suits are rather than how strong Bobbie is - by themselves the suits are nearly as powerful as a trained marine, so when they wear them they're doubling their strength. So it shows that these aren't invincible Iron Man suits but if you're wearing one you can punch twice as hard, run twice as fast, etc.

The only thing that makes sense (to me) is that she started filming the show while trying to gain weight. She seems thicker in some shots in the 2 episode premiere than others. I realize her skin tight suit looks slimming, but not that much.

Aside, is Bobby a genocidal wacko, is that common among Martians, or was her "Who's going to stomp their mountains into dust" just a psych-up speech? I get and appreciate that the inanity of war between Earth and Mars is the point, but the "Kill all Earthicans" poo poo makes a certain impression of Martians other than the Roci's pilot.

It’s more than that. A marine with doubled strength probably couldn’t tear a steel bulkhead apart, but in power armour, an MCRN marine can.

Similar to Avasarala in season one, they are giving her character an ark to develop into how they are when the appear in Calibans War. That is a real treat for book readers and confirms this show is superior.
