Did Tony take that weird passive aggressive shot related to Rey Mysterio, Mexico and Gatemala yet? I think it had to do with some ex-coworker getting answer wrong on jeopardy.

not sure why you spoiler tagged that, but no, that was a quote from a 2001 observer and those quotes were from late '99

it was who wants to be a millionaire and it wasn't a co-worker, but and advisor to tony's boss who advised him to pass on him for being the wcw's #1 announcer in favor of jim ross setting tony down a path of being the most cheerful and secretly bitter man we came to enjoy

BAEST MODE!!!
I'm going to post this here since I'm hoping to have some discussion after. Tonight I'm going to air Pro Wrestling USA's SUPERCLASH '85. This took place not long after Wrestlemania so it's Pro Wrestling USA's response... including a midget Mr. T. It took place at Comisky Park and drew 20,000 fans. It's the biggest thing to come out of Pro Wrestling USA.

Brad Rheingans vs Steve Regal for the AWA Light Heavyweight Championship!

Sherri Martel vs Candy Devine for the AWA Women's Championship!

Mil Mascaras vs Buddy Roberts for the IWA World Heavyweight Championship!

Greg Gagne, Scott Hall and Curt Hennig vs. Ray Stevens, Nick Bockwinkel and Larry Zbyszko!

Little Tokyo vs Mr. T for the NWA Midget Championship!

Jumbo Tsuruta, Giant Baba, and Genichiro Tenryu vs. Harley Race, Bill Irwin and Scott Irwin for the "Asian Six Man Tag Team Championships"!

Kerry Von Erich vs Jimmy Garvin for the WCCW Heavyweight Championship!

Krusher Khruschev, Ivan Koloff and Nikita Koloff vs. Crusher, Dick the Bruiser and Baron von Raschke for the NWA Six Man Tag Championship!

Jerry Blackwell vs Kamala in a $10,000 Bodyslam Challenge!

The Road Warriors vs The Fabulous Freebirds for the AWA World Tag Team Championship!

Sgt. Slaughter vs Boris Zukhov for the AWA America's Championship!

Ric Flair vs Magnum TA for the NWA World Championship!

Rick Martel vs Stan Hansen for the AWA World Championship!

It all goes down at 8 PM! The AWA, WCCW and NWA team up... briefly.

In order to hype this epic AWA-related event, will we have a pre-show involving great moments in AWA/NWA/WCCW history, perhaps starting at 7 EST?

Since he was the big star of Pro Wrestling USA I actually have a bunch of Sgt. Slaughter videos to show, including SGT SLAUGHTER VS BIGFOOT.

It was a show in the 80s so I expected a lot of bad finishes and it managed to leave me mad by the end.

On the one hand McMahon engaged in some outright predatory behavior, on the other hand the people he was fighting seemed to go out of their way to help him.

DIRECTIVE 236: Promote pro-social values
From the January 24, 2000 Wrestling Observer:

quote:

The revised end of year estimates are that WCW as a company lost between $15 and $16 million in 1999, which is roughly the amount of money they lost in the entire three-year reign of Jim Herd. Now that Time-Warner is in the process of being purchased by AOL and the figures being tossed around are like $160 billion, figures like $15 million may as well be 15 cents so while it is always good for a division to be profitable, making a profit is hardly anywhere near as important today as it was throughout most of the history of the industry when it was largely a hand-to-mouth business.

Indeed. You'd have to be ridiculously stupid and lose like 60 million dollars in one year to catch someone's eye at AOL Time-Warner.

ChrisBTY
Mar 29, 2012

this glorious monument

Which is really a pretty good argument for this "AOL/Time Warner would have dropped WCW like a bad habit the second Turner was no longer around to protect it no matter how profitable it was" argument. Even if it was a 15 Million per year profit I'm sure it wasn't worth the black eye of having professional wrestling being a very visible part of your corporate dossier to a lot of executive types.

Because pop culture is cyclical and self referential and the NWO shirt is such an iconic symbol of late 90's pop culture that I'm pretty sure there were people out there buying and wearing them who had no idea it was wrestling merch.

El Gallinero Gros
Mar 17, 2010
That, and the term "New World Order" has pretty strong political connotations, which is why Aziz wore it

That actually reminds me: some lady wrote a review of a Monday Night Raw where she labled the nWo as a hate group who beat up a skinhead (referring to the Rock). To this day, it is still the single dumbest thing I've ever read in the mainstream media about wrestling. And that includes Phil Muschnick.

Some funny stuff in the Retro Observer...

quote:

Christopher Daniels and Mike Henderson got a try-out match before Nitro in Los Angeles and it was said to be a good match.

For Thunder on 1/25 in Las Vegas, before the show started they had a try-out match with former Mr. Olympia contender Aaron Baker doing a job for Crowbar. He didn't look good. Since Daniels looked great and Baker didn't, I'd say Baker is probably odds on to get hired.

Steve Austin was already running on the treadmill by the latter part of the week. Dr. Lloyd Youngblood told him he would make a full recovery and his neck would be stronger than it had been but didn't want him back in the ring for six months. Austin is shooting to be back in three.

Considering how bad he looks at Backlash, good luck with that Steve.

I liked how the Radicalz all ditched Shane Douglas behind and signed with WWF and kept denying it. Even after Douglas called a hotel and confirmed they all booked rooms under their names. Is he the worst at politics in wrestling history?

I had no idea bodybuilder Aaron Baker tried out as a pro wrestler. I'm surprised Vince didn't sign him on looks alone, probably because he was 5'8".

Also, I found out he's dead now when looking for a picture.

Speaking of the latest Observer:

quote:

Vince Russo came to the office and had his own meeting with Busch, making demands of his own, either wanting a release from his contract, which had 21 months remaining, agreeing to stay on as a writer for the show but not working underneath Kevin Sullivan, Gary Juster or J.J. Dillon, or demanding to be put back in his head writing (ie booking) position for nine months without any interruption or interference. At press time, no decision was made regarding Russo, but he was not at the WCW television tapings this week.

What was the end result of this?
