I'm about to start watching the Korean version. Hopefully it's as good as this was.

Is there anything else out there similar? I loved this series and would love to watch similar stuff

I haven't seen the series you mentioned but from the description it vaguely reminds me of the series Booth at the end. So check that out?

Maybe Japanese television is a lot more chill, but porn or tentacle porn is the punchline to like 3 episodes and there's a ton of dick jokes in one of em.

Booth at the End sounds interesting.

I really just like slice of life shows that aren't about rich, beautiful people saving the world or doing something epic. Is there a recommend thread in here like in the book forum?

I randomly stumbled upon Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories on Netflix tonight and promptly watched the first 5 episodes back to back. It's a super chill slice of life thing about people that frequent a late night restaurant in some back alley in Tokyo. I'm addicted.

Thanks for mentioning this, I just started it thanks to you and it's great.

When I was a kid I read a bunch of Ranma 1/2 manga comics and it had tits and sex jokes all over the place. The Ranma comics and anime shows had age recommendations as at least 8 years old. Japan is just weird.

I'm about halfway through season 4 of Justified now. I really enjoyed season two a lot. Three was decent but the finale was great. So far four has been okay, but I can see why a lot have said it was the weakest season.

I'd say 4 is the most different-feeling season, but it isn't bad at all. Most people agree 5 is the weakest.

Ahh, that makes more sense :) it still has its moments, but the Crowes just aren't great villains and the Ava subplot is real poor

Just binged Billionares. For some reason I put off this last year because I didn't realize Paul Giamatti was a lead. Turns out that was a mistake.

It's a way more wacky Parks & Rec. Last season was kinda iffy but I'd recommend giving it a watch.

Yeah I'd say it's worse than all those but still enjoyable. But less character-focused and goofier than most.

I like Brooklyn 99 better than much of the American version of the Office, actually. As for the rest of that list I'd say it's not quite as good but that's some pretty elevated company, sitcom-wise.

I've only seen two seasons but I really love it. It's similar to Parks and Rec in that it's really kind-spirited. And Andre Braugher as Captain Holt is legit amazing.

When I was home with my dad I watched some Barney Miller and it sort of feels like a modern update of that show.

(Living in NYC though, I have to watch it as if it takes place in a parallel universe where the police are passionate, competent, and not even slightly racist)

B99 seems a lot more like standup sketch comedy than the others, but it still is very entertaining and has really solid overarching plots and character development, alongside its zaniness. It became more 'TV' -like about midway through the first season.

You could always watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia if you want an amazing comedy show. It's pretty genius. And unbelievably crude.

Arrested Development and 30 Rock are my favorites of the ones you listed, but they're all very good. Brooklyn's more fun than the Office, though, but doesn't reach any of the heights.

This current season 12 is amazing. The show kinda switches up after a few seasons, so I could see why some people dislike some seasons after the first six or seven.

One of my favorite comedies is You're the Worst. It's fantastic comedy at times, and fantastic drama at others. Sandwiched between the comedy are some brutal dramatic scenes.

I'm actually still watching through it. I hear it had a few down years but has been on an upswing for the last 2/3.

And yeah, You're the Worst is fantastic stuff. Very probably my favourite of the recent romcom-as-TV trend.

Just finishing up season 2 of Schitt's Creek. It's been pretty drat good so far, I'm disappointed I disregarded it for the lovely (heh) name at first. Is Daniel Levi Eugene's son? He's got the eye brows for sure. He's also probably the best character in the show. Very obnoxious at first, but he's actually got a little bit of personality after his whole thing with Stevie in season 1. Speaking of which, as good as the show is, I think my favorite part is watching David and Stevie try not to crack each other up every time they have a scene together.

There seems to be a particularly British phenomenon where shows cynically luxuriate in the pettiness and hypocrisy of their characters and sometimes it's just suffocating. I'm still thinking about the episode with the stationary bikes and the talent show, so it definitely got to me in a way that, say, the memory implant episode didn't, but even when something is genuinely compelling, there's a certain facile exaggeration to a lot of the dystopia that pulls me out of it. Like, not only is it hard to imagine why anyone would live like these people, but often these people are just acting like complete sacks of poo poo in ways that don't even seem connected to the circumstances of their premise.
I'm reminded of what Ricky Gervais said about the difference between US and UK comedy, when speaking about The Office. Basically, in the US, people like the lovable but uncouth buffoon who you root for despite his missteps because he means well (Michael Scott). In the UK, people identify more with the sad sack everyman (David Brent).

Thanks for the Strike Back recommendations upthread, I've been having a lot of fun with it. That said I just finished Season 4, and the quality of the writing has been dropping off sharply. It had quite a few cringey or eye-rolling moments. Does it recover at all for Season 5?

I'm halfway into Black Mirror season 3 and I find the series overall very hit-or-miss (though season 3 seems more solid so far). My general feeling is that it's good at ramping up, but bad at endings. Every episode leaves me a bit unsatisfied, like it should've had one extra pulling back of the curtain, or a deeper layer revealed. The stories don't go far enough, and often stop just short of their potential. Without that, the stories just happen. You can only do the "welp, people are poo poo, what can ya do" ending so many times before getting diminishing returns.
