The best companion (also the second you pick up) is a Fighter. You can build/use each class different ways (except Ciphers and Priests, possibly, but they're fairly flexible by default even if the builds always end up similar), but if you don't want duplicate classes it's something to consider.

Eder, rigth?

In all the art and shots of him he uses a saber and a shield so I figured I'd build him as a tank while I would pump whatever stat ups damage and have my guy use a rifle and a great-sword. I read there was a feat or something that boosted the effectiveness of rifles and great-swords (something Soldier I think) so that was a plus in my book.

Yeah, Edér.
You can build Fighters as tanks or dependable damage-dealers that can still take a hit and generally don't need much baby-sitting.
They're best in melee because durability is a big draw of the class and a lot of the class abilities you can pick are melee-based. If you want a 50/50 ranged/melee split a Rogue would be a better option, although a Fighter could still do it. Guns are good to open fights with, though, so you don't need to focus on ranged combat to get mileage out of them.

That's funny my character Waidwen II is an Aedyran Orlan priest who pretty much told Raedric to gargle his Eothosian balls and definitely got Durance burnt to death.

Are there any party members or things I could do differently to clinch this?

Anybody?

I found a vid where they temper him successfully, but other than that I don't think there's much info out there. Looks like they tell him that animancy sucks and that the White Forge is too powerful for kith. You might have needed to side against animancy in the trial, maybe?

Iirc the engwythans allegedly had means of growing adra but nobody knows how it's done in the present, and I don't think the living adra grows on its own, so it remains something like a unrenewable resource.

Yeah saw that one. I figure there's got to be other options but I simply don't know what they are. I freed the Durgans Battery dwarves so I have one point I can make successfully, I just need one more :argh:

It will suck if there truly is no other option and I'm stuck one point short. I sided with Animancy so that avenue is out and Aloth is anti-Leaden Key so having him speak up doesn't seem to help. Hopefully there's some edge case I'm not aware of in the code.

After several failed attempts at getting into Pillars 1 (I always somehow manage to get myself burnt out around Defiance Bay), I'm really trying this time to get myself through it. But I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on which PC background and party composition makes the most "sense" story-wise? I'm big into the story and role-play aspect of these games, not so much the combat, and what has stopped me before is that it has felt very weird to me how some party members just join your party for no story-related or even, really, good reasons. I'm not sure if that makes any sense to anyone but me but I'm basically just trying to gage what party of people (including the PC) is best to take through the game for their interaction with the main plot.

This has been answered but here is my two cents (you san safely assume that below text would be :goonsay: as hell) :

Before even buying the game I knew I will be playing a human Kind Wayfarer paladin because I am a dullard. I don't like godlike as a concept for the main PC, or any other fantasy race for that matter. I don't like characters that aren't created by me and non human in general hence why I was always distant to the Witcher series (I really wish if we get a game that allows creating a new witcher from other schools and I'd play the gently caress out of that).

So, human Kind Wayfarer paladin. I chose the Deadfire Archipelago because I am a huge fan of Earthsea but I think Old Valia fits the theme of "someone leaving his past behind and setting up for a new life". As a background I go with Soldier or Farmer but usually stay away from aristocrat or philosopher backgrounds.

My party is Eder, Aloth, Zahua, Durance, Grieving Mother / Kana and pervy midget man. The Aloth, Eder, Durance trio feels like the most involved combination with the main quest and my character in general.

I think like this:

I have survived: Two certain death super natural events, one Glanfathan raid that left everyone I know so far murdered, survived a goddamn deathtrap dungeon, a bear infested cave, a bandit camp and reached to a "civilized" land where they hanged awful lot of people and the sleazy constable greeted me told some weird as gently caress story about soulless babies. I am going to trust this pipe smoking fella whom looks like a veteran, a mage who is also treated badly by the locals and, well, this bearded guy with flaming staff that smells like compost until I can make it out alive. Then I can look into that nightmares and awakening stuff I guess because that robed dude looked like he is up to no good and someone has to set things straight for the common folk, yo.

I especially can't seem to part with Eder and Aloth due to severe bromance happening with both of them.

Edér really good with dual hatchets too, if you want him tanking. Hatchet's have a passive bonus to deflection (your melee dodge skill), so you can give him two hatchets, dual wield specialisation and a load of defensive talents and the marginal loss in defence he takes by giving up a shield is more than made up by his increase in damage.

You can even take cautious attack (a modal that trades attack speed for defence), and it'll cancel out the benefits of dual wield specialisation, but give you a constant bonus to defence, which you can then switch off for an attack speed increase when you just want to hack stuff.
