Hey guys, I like extreme and scary sports. I've watched my fill of mountain climbing documentaries (Everest and K2 are so cool!), and now I'm interested in learning about people spelunking in crazy places and deep sea divers. Any recommendations? I also really enjoy the deep parts of the ocean in general, if anyone has suggestions for that. I've seen Blue Planet and Planet Earth. Hope this wasn't too vague.

Along the same lines there is Road a documentary about the Dunlop family of Irish road racing fame. Valley Uprising a documentary about Rick climbing

I don't know why it's so fascinating to me, but something about the crazy poo poo people do just because they can is really entertaining to watch and learn about. Closest I ever got was off-trail mountain skiing, lol.

With all things sketchy on YouTube, watch first ask questions later. It will probably be taken down shortly. edit: For what it's worth this is kinda tough to watch. It's cropped so titles are cut off and they did something weird with the framerate (probably to get around content detection)... people seem to talk a little slower than they should and lips don't match up with speech at all. Not worth struggling through IMHO, or at least turn off the video and just listen. mod sassinator fucked around with this message at 21:22 on Feb 16, 2017 |

I think the better question is what Frontline docs aren't good--most are worth a watch. The war ones are great epics--there's one for Bush (Iraq) and Obama (Aghanistan).

Watched the new BBC docudrama on Terry Pratchett. It was... well, it was OK I guess? I mean, the interviews and archive footage was good but the whole "let's get an actor to bring Pratchett to life" idea really didn't work well for me. Just felt... wrong and slightly embarassing.

Wow going through the list of Frontline shows makes me realize I haven't seen the huge majority of them, so I have to get on that. Perfect for watching while working out. Ones that I've seen that I thought particularly good: "Sick Around The World", comparing health systems in several modern industrialized countries: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/sickaroundtheworld/ "The Medicated Child", about how the diagnosis of bipolar disorder began being applied to children almost overnight, and the medications used for adults began being prescribed for children, and some of the consequences: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/medicatedchild/ "The Tankman", about the Tianamen Square massacre, in the context of modern era of coporate China that has passed since: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/tankman/ Full list of films available for streaming here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/watch/ Edit: Oh, and "The Choice: Year X" videos about the Dem and Republican candidates in each election are well done and provide, I think, some insight into the candidates with detailed biographies. Tankman is boss, and you should spend an hour or two looking up stories related to him. Nobody ever figured out who he was - he literally just seemed to be a guy shopping for groceries who decided to say "gently caress you" to an armored tank brigade. Most chinese don't even know he existed, and to the best of my knowledge he was never found, celebrated, prosecuted, or disappeared. He just went home after becoming the subject of one of the most iconic photographs in modern history.

It might have been mentioned, but Pumping Iron is on Netflix streaming. This movie has been around since I was a kid but I only got around to watching it now, and it's quite good if you can ignore the 70's porntastic soundtrack. It focuses on a Mr. Olympia contest at the end of Arnold Schwarzenegger's competitive bodybuilding career, after he had completely dominated the sport for several years and won a number of these titles. The focus is mainly on Arnold, and two of his main competitors, notably Lou Ferrigno who was then the up and coming guy trying to knock Arnold off his perch. You can definitely see at this time that Arnold had a big future beyond bodybuilding. The guy is a charming motherfucker and an excellent interview, and comes across as really likeable despite revealing his methods to manipulate and mindfuck his competition. A couple of things come across as maybe a bit staged. I really liked Lou Ferrigno's dad who gets a lot of screentime supervising Lou's training. Don't watch it if you are bothered by a lot of scenes of sweaty oily guys with huge muscles though!

Pumping Iron is like, the epitome of a staged documentary with a wrestling-style plotline being placed on the characters. To my knowledge it sort of created the entire "reality" TV genre.

A Death in St. Augustine is a great (and infuriating) Frontline doc about domestic violence in the police force. Also, I watched Tickled the other night on HBO and wow. Just wow. There's also a 20 minute follow-up on it about everything that has happened since the movie was released including the subject of the doc showing up at one of the early screenings.

Yeah sorry that was pretty vague wording on my part. They delve a little bit into how many in the police force are involved in domestic violence with their spouse/partner. But the focus of the doc is just on the murder/suicide case in St. Augustine.
