I, on the other hand, had an MOS that would gleefully poo poo on your face and kick you in the balls before allowing you past E4. After the first few years I stopped checking because promotion points never dropped from 798, then I got the gently caress out and now I out rank all those motherfuckers anyway.

I made 5 in 3 years as MI, although ARNG so our promotion system is different than AD; a board of E-8s/E-9s ranks promotable E-4s and then the state fills available slots in order of board ranking.

i had to max out basically ever category and got to like 740 pts and waited like 3 years for E6 points to drop to that level :/ another deployment or like a bachelors and I would have maxed that category too :(

The running joke (not a joke) was that anyone who was an NCO was also a MOS-T because it was an intel MOS that gave a clearance and had a year of AIT in all kinds of neato poo poo that actually looks really good on a résumé in real life and not just according to a recruiter. Pretty much every single NCO slot was some MOS re-tread and everyone who started at the bottom right out of basic had no hope in hell of ever making rank in any decent time unless they also reclassed somewhere else.

It was basically an entire MOS that had a very distinctly unhappy outlook on the entire rank structure.

I got dicked by that when I was a PFC, just prior to SPC. Have a guess what my chances of just going to the board as a former tanker in a cavalry squadron with no job training were?

Hell you can't even get promoted now without BLC/ALC. A few of my friends went to Africa for a year and had to wait until they redeployed, attend BLC and graduate to make their 5.

I don't think that would be necessarily terrible if like ALC wait times for class weren't be like a year out and poo poo, does that count both phases? I did ALC (the SSG one incase I'm mixing these up) like tdy classroom phase like 2 years before I got to do the online one.

“We don’t really know where this goes — and I’m not sure we really care.”
BLC classes are also packed, I have several promotable specialists that have been trying to get in for months. It's all they need to get promoted.

Either there's a poo poo ton of promotable specialists or units are just sending every specialist they have, and if that's the case it's bullshit that the promotable ones aren't priority for slots.

Seriously, shut the fuck up.

:dukedog:
I'm almost definitely going to finish up my 6 years as an E4, because I don't care. Been in almost 5 years and have never even been to the board, been a SPC for 3. Told my leadership I'm not reenlisting, so they aren't going to send me unless they are forced to, and I'm not even going to try if they do. Being responsible for the idiots I work with is the last thing I need in my life.

Since like Jan 2016. It's so crazy right now.

On one hand I hated being held with poor regard against soldiers who deployed, and deployment doesn't always equate to relevant experience, but it really was a kick in the balls to explain to my soldiers that it actually didn't matter much anymore whether or not they came on this deployment points wise, and that their BLC course was given to another SPC, and that their competitors would be SGT Rear D upon our return home.

BLC courses are different in country anyway. In my case, BLC for the OK natty G had really atrocious availability, and here overseas there is actually much better opportunities to attend.

Yeah but we fell under AFRICOM which means some loving rear end in a top hat in Germany gets the slot. Not actually the in country dudes.

Africa sucks.

Alternative fact: Africa isn't so bad.

Well, not so bad as an E4 who has no chance nor couldn't care less about being promoted. I have no intention of reclassing or attending BLC before I get out and the three E5 25B slots in the whole sig brigade are never vacating.

Also being one of the few without any responsibilities and elevated privileges puts me on the top of the list to go out and do things in countries nobody else in my unit will get to visit. Which in turn gets me out of doing the lovely details other E4s get stuck with.

I knew a douchebag E5 that did that when I was in Germany. I was an E4 when I met him, he was an old, broken, loud mouth who had airborne wings sewn onto his field jacket liner. Didn't deploy with us for some reason and joined us towards the end of deployment when I was an promotable to SSG and he was still an E5 with the auto P. He signed all his emails with SGT (P) Douchebag. Even though he never went to the board and wasn't really promotable. That guy was so stupid that he threatened to smoke me when I blew him off because he outranked me by TIG even though I was going to pin the next week.

There are actual times/reasons to use or not use (P) but that is pretty strictly for OER and NCOER purposes based on the applicable regulation and is absolutely not adding your (P) to your automatic Email signature.
