The Prodigy was extremely my poo poo during my teenage years... and well, it still is. Back in the day I loved seeing the songs that were sampled being mentioned in the liner notes, even though there was no easy way to hear the originals at the time. So I was pretty ecstatic when I found about Dirtchamber Sessions Vol 1. It's a shame there never was more of that but I imagine mix tapes like will always be music licensing nightmare (I remember 2 Many DJs making a comment along those lines once). I remember a Guardian interview they did when one of their albums was about to be released, they were lamenting that there was nothing new and exciting about music anymore. The album they went on to release was basically lovely b-sides to Invaders and a track with Flux Pavillion a solid 5 years after dubstep had died a death. This album and Chemical Brothers and the Spawn soundtrack was what got me into electronic music my freshman year of high school. I used to listen to Fat of the Land while I played Quake mods all day long. I think what I liked about Prodigy is that I was getting into hard rock and metal at the same time, and Prodigy felt raw and dangerous in the same way that metal felt. It was electronic and computery, but it was still edgy and still felt as much like fight music as dance music. I listen to Invaders Must Die a little more than FotL these days, but FotL is still probably a perfect album in my book. This makes me remember buying a huge picture of Keith looking like an evil motherfucker that my mom made me get rid of. We laugh about that now.

I had a little look and couldn't find much in the way of a (decent) creative remix of Climbatize, which is how you can tell the original got it spot on first time. To go to the completely opposite end of the scale: Rock N Roll It's not much of a rarity as it's been a staple of their live sets on and off since about 1994, but it's gone through a few changes over the years, and there's never been a studio version released. In a weird way I feel like Leeroy leaving was the end of peak prodigy. Dude could dance like a motherfucker (see the out of space video). When he left it just wasn't the same. I'm a big fan of experience era prodigy though. Girls is a hell of a track though

  After the explosive start, this is where the album begins for real. Featuring the vocal talents of the Ultramagnetic MCs' Kool Keith (for real this time), this little pulsating slice of hip-hop is a bit of a calmer relatively speaking, but it's still hard not to move to the beat. It's a side of the Prodigy that was never really fully explored, and arguably the reason why Liam went in the direction that culminated in the Dirtchamber Sessions soon after. Personally I've always liked it, it's not a track I'd specifically sit down and listen to but I always enjoy it when listening to the album. Also, the bit at the end with the numbers always made me feel like I was missing something, but I don't think there's a deeper meaning to it. Yeah, this album is extremely my poo poo. I "discovered" big beat in like 2008 during my senior year of high school. Of course, it was long dead by then, but this is naturally one of the first albums I was introduced too and man it owned. Still owns. One of my favorite things about TFOTL, is that after it's rocket start it gets mellower and mellower. Eventually by the time Climbatize comes around you feel like you've made a little journey and are pretty content with where you wind up. If that makes any sense at all.

Sounds about right, maybe Climbatize should have been a bit earlier in the album so you'd have a proper fast-slow-fast pattern but I think it worked out alright anyway. As an aside, these "art figures" are now a thing:     A limited edition of 250 sets, a mere bargain at £150.

Pendulum were one of my favorite bands for a while and they went through a phase where they were straight up trying to be The Prodigy (they even had Liam on a track), but even they couldn't hit Prodigy's highs. My first experience with The Prodigy was the use of Invaders Must Die in the Duke Nukem Forever reveal trailer when I was in 8th grade. I downloaded a bunch of Prodigy to listen to after hearing it, and it heavily defined my early highschool years.

What makes this track unique are the circumstances surrounding it - Liam produced it for a porno called The Uranus Experiment. No really. The NWS tags are there because the track contains some naughty sounds so you probably shouldn't blast it at full volume around other people (unless you record their reactions for the thread). Rat Poison / Scienide. To be fair they are comfortably their best B-sides. Anyway, since this thread has revived: We're out of the woods in the middle and back in full brain engage mode. The subtle change to the name that emerged turned out to be pretty apt I'd say. The Jilted undertones combined with full Fat make for a good time. Rolling Stone magazine said of it: "Squelching synths bounce round each other on "Mindfields," creating a mesmerizing funk force field", and that description does me nicely. I was 18 when that record came out and 19 before I gave it serious attention. I don't think the Prodigy had the same effect on me as it did for a lot of people because I had already listened to a lot of electronic music (Skinny Puppy was already among my favorite groups, along with others ) but... because of this thread I listened to Fat again. It's still as good as it was when I first heard it. Great record.
