to be honest I prefer the dynamic in the reverse dollops, Dave is better at interjecting without feeling the need to riff or ask for clarification on every single point and Gary is better at reading notes without losing his place several times an episode even if most of his stories are from documentaries I watched recently

I love the early parts where Dave is being critical of everything from Gary's reading to the story itself. He's very good at that and it's funny.

Something about the rhythm of Gary's reading voice, though. It's got this weird "up-and-down" vibe.

I enjoy that Dave doesn't make a two word phrase and then immediately shoehorn it into a conflated word that isn't very funny multiple times per episode

It's a little tiring

I initially skipped The Falling Pilot because it didn't sound interesting to me at all, but I really loved how it all panned out. That poo poo was terrifying.

As an aside, beyond the KKK one recently, what are some other episodes that end up being positive?

Some less-talked-about older episodes: Owen Kildare, Stagecoach Mary, and Bass Reeves are all mostly-positive stories about people who made something of themselves despite their environment. Stuff like the Pedestrianism episode and America's Greatest Sack of Flour are pretty much just silly, if you're looking for something like that.

When Dave mentioned the helium rich atmosphere they were living in my first thought was "Wouldn't that make everyone's voices into cartoon chipmunk voices?" and was kind of disappointed that Gareth never really picked up that thread.

Then the phonecall totally loving paid off. Holy poo poo that was good.

It's a very old episode, but one of the "History of the LAPD" episodes ends with a dude who both hosts agree turned out pretty great. I think it was the third part of the 4 part series. I obviously don't want to spoil any of the specific of the story but he winds up an almost universally beloved rich philanthropist who starts a sex toy business with the mistress his wife knew and accepted.

Was that the same guy who was super-Christian and also opened a great big diner (or maybe it was a soup kitchen)?

Just listened to the Battle of Hayes Pond, and it's nice to have a feel-good one that ends with Klansmen getting their asses kicked. Dave sometimes gets a little too into tragedy porn, and while I get that he wants to do the cautionary/message stuff, sometimes you need a break from that.

Clifton's Cafeteria, which is an awesome restaurant in Los Angeles. I mean, honestly, look at this place. This was Part 2 of the LAPD series, by the way.

I just started listening to the dollop from the beginning and just heard The Rube. Seriously why isn't there a movie about him?
I mean I can think of a few reasons but like they said, it could be a dark comedy, like a less sentimental Forrest Gump. I know it could easily be in poor taste, so they'd still have to try to humanize him. Maybe it could be like a more comedic Bronson, that did a good job of humanizing without sentimentalizing. They don't even have to cover his whole life and death, they could play up the rivalry with Cy Young and have that provide some structure to the plot while they go on a bunch of tangents in between.

Most people don't know what he looked like so they could get away with casting someone who doesn't look like him. Ashton Kutcher looks like a young Steve Jobs but from what I heard that movie wasn't very good.
That being said John C. Reilly has built his career playing oafs and it would probably be better to cast an actor that doesn't usually play that kind of character. I'm not recommending Ashton Kutcher but picking someone that looked more like the actual Rube would show at least a modicum of respect for the person the movie would be based on. Again, it's tricky for it not to seem cruel, even though the guy did die 100 years ago.
