Holy poo poo. I have tried so. many. times. to complete Southern Reach with a Fork mounting the low-arc Scimitar and Confessor shotgun (with higher projectile speed on the pellets), plus active camo. It's a great setup, but I've always managed to get hosed over somewhere down the line through all of my attempts over the past week or so. Until tonight.

Somehow I went from this:

To this:

Most satisfying victory to date BY FAR. Holy poo poo. I still can't believe I managed to pull through the spaceport with ONE HULL POINT. There were some dicey moments, let me tell you. And it wasn't until the spaceport that I set off the alarm, pretty early on, which made things that much tougher. Goddamn Zed Primes always get the word out just before I can crush those tin cans.

Also, gently caress Widows. Especially since I made that 20MW laser they (and several other Spacer units) use fire in three-shot bursts and do a bit more overall damage. I also removed the Widow's boss unit status, so you won't see a big glowing icon over it. Makes its cloak that much more effective.

Oh, and is it just me, or are there a few Corvid units that never got used anywhere in the game? I never saw the Tasker, Eightball, Moray, or Duke anywhere before I added them to my Corvid spawn list. And the Duke is awesome, not the least of which being it is an excellent Escape from New York reference!

Love getting these updates.

There's a lot of vehicles that are barely used—my overhaul leading into the June relaunch should address that, going to try and broaden the spectrum of enemy units more, and have a much more gradual difficulty curve going into the game. A lot of people still have serious trouble with Norman runs, so we're going to spread that out more.

You'll be happy to know that the Crambo has been completely redone, and that the Parliament is getting some buff love among many, many other changes. The reason we haven't updated the main branch though is that the recent Apple OS update has hosed our build servers and we're all hands on deck getting poo poo ready for localization so it's going to be a bit before we can fix that and update the game again.

Cross-platform is the woooooooooooooooooooooooooooorst.

So Steam's changed how they count reviews-- if you received the game for free you just don't count anymore. Which for some people meant their review went down (KS, review padding etc), but for us means that our approval bumped all the way up to 98%

Downside is that it pulled us back under the 500 overwhelming mark, so we're back to being 25 reviews short. Got what we needed for my GDC talk though

The nice thing about single player balance is that you don't have a million players telling you 'XYZ is OP pls nerf' and you can focus on buffing everything til it's fun and viable.

Hah, yeah. If there was pvp MP, the Zeus would rule all.

I recently finished a campaign run using the fourth vehicle choice for all missions and it was a blast. Was easier than I thought it would be, too.

Konig got a tiny nerf, single trigger pulls now fire a burst so you can't feather it for single shots, like a real Gau-8. Chieftain's cool just not very effective, so I'm reworking it while maintaining the same general design. The Crambo is much shorter range now, but is a death sentence for Corvids in particular.

This isn't my GDC talk (slides should be available soon and I'll annotate them with my script) or Full Indie talk—it's a tiny 7 minute one I gave locally for PechaKucha about videogames and empathy. Given the time constraints and the fact that I couldn't assume the audience was games literate I had to be super broad with it, but I think I still managed to get some good nuggets in there:

This. Or lighting off gas stations, etc. Or noise pollution. Also, a 'single Konig round' atm is a burst of 2, not a single shot. Anthony, how big of a burst are we talking about?

That's right-- we do a funky thing with the Konig which is that given expected framerates we couldn't set the "real" firing rate to be appropriate for a GAU-8 style weapon, so instead we just had it fire 2 round per "shot". The rounds travel so quickly though you can't tell unless you really look close or pause the game.

Anyway, here's a sample of the upcoming changelog. This isn't everything, but it'll give you an idea of the amount of stuff in the pipe:

GUNS
-Added additional information readouts for all weapons
-Konig fires in 6 round bursts instead of 2
-Increased speed of Harvester submunition, slightly decreased spread.
-Significantly increased Archie AoE
-Slightly reduced Pitbull muzzle velocity
-Slightly buffed Abbot explosion damage
-Slightly increased Preacher AoE
-Belter fires 3 round bursts instead of single shots
-Added damage over time for Broiler
-Slightly increased Confessor AoE, increased damage
-Completely redid the Crambo
-Increase Bully environment damage
-Increased Gutterball and Jericho penetration

.... aaaand more to come

Considering the Konig has an 800 round magazine, isn't that slightly awkward? What about a 5 or 4 round burst?

Wooo, just completed a solid campaign run:

Gotta love those Corvid agravs. Fun as poo poo, and as long as you don't take too much fire, you'll do all right. I doubt I could complete a freelance run in this thing, though.

The campaign maps are all excellent, too. Any plans to integrate some of them into freelance mode? I'd really like to see some of the larger ones made freelance-compatible. I'd also be into having an operation which is basically the Campaign Run, but with early exit enabled so you can start on any map you want. Then you can, say, test your double donk Varlet on Intense Gravity or something. Same with an early exit version of Closed Casket Special (Open Casket Special? :haw:). See how far you can get, but you aren't locked in to doing EVERYTHING.

You can load up the campaign missions with the debug menu. It doesn't set the ambient light levels correctly, though. It just uses whatever light level you were last playing at. You also have to remember what objectives are tied to which maps.

i still hope we get a infantry vehicle with this relaunch

ive been playing off and on as one via debug using small class weapon and while its easily as hard as Hideous Destructor i dont think its actually impossible to finish a level like this.

i mean its probably impossible on a spacer level where they group up and you can't really ambush one thing at a time but im sure with some clever play even that could be overcome.

I have a growing soft spot for the Roper. Ever think about taking a break from using little baby mechs to flex your dual heavy mount with turret speed swivel muscles.

You know, so I can be jealous of something I've fooled myself into thinking I'm okay with :v:

I tried a dual Bishop w/ AK Pulse Roper once. It was bar-none the most viscerally-satisfying config I've tried so far, completely obliterating absolutely everything in its path. But man, good luck NOT setting off an alarm and getting mobbed with that thing. It's the polar opposite of subtle :v:

[Edit] Oh also, I think I figured out how the early exit yes/no system works for operations. If you pull up the Overmap resources, you can edit individual operations there, and in the Nodes section, you can specify "neighbors" for each node. All the non-linear operations show all levels as neighbors for every node.

The linear ones all have one neighbor per node, which implies to me that you always go from A to B in that order. But if you were to add neighbors, then you could expand on that choices you have, going from A to B, C, or D. Or every choice all the way to Z, if every level is listed as a neighbor to each node.

Looks like you can do some cool stuff, like having one level unlock multiple choices and become semi-linear rather than totally nonlinear or straight linear if you specify only a handful of neighbors per node. Gonna try that out by editing Closed Casket Special (seeing how I have no hope of ever completing that one normally without using the Auditor).

my favorite heavy agrav is the spacer one who's name escapes me.

I like to load it up with dual banshees and active camo. On maps where the swarms get too much for the banshees to chew up without me sustaining heavy damage, I cloak, flank and hit em with a strafe run from behind which is usually enough to tilt a battle in my favor. :tutbutt:

only downside is it can get kinda difficult to get all the depots and all the orbital guns because of how much ammo you can carry and how much ammo you need and its not like you can hump em to death like substations and comms towers and stuff.
