i think the problem with making a movie based on a property aimed at kids is time. You basically have a year, maybe two tops before the kids age out and move onto something else. So whatever you make has to be made fast, and preferable cheap. So no going out of your way to hire a martial artist to teach a bunch of middle grade actors how to throw a convincing punch on screen.

I don't understand how you watch a second of that show and decide that Sokka needs to be mopey and whiny or that Aang should be depressed.

Moreover, it's not like it's impossible to make a film based on an existing property from the past that was well-liked and have it be successful. Hell, a good portion of Hollywood these days is based on doing exactly that. "Hubris" is my go-to explanation for the movie falling apart so spectacularly, but it really does boggle the mind when you have a director making what is clearly a martial arts film without a single recognizable martial art in it.

VolticSurge posted:Korra,on the other hand... But that guy is once again an idiot and I turned it off when he talked about NICK EXECUTIVES. To be clear, The Legend of Korra is a heavily serialized steampunk series with characters who are exclusively Asian or Native American in appearance and features intense violence. One of the biggest plot threads in the show is that the hero of the previous show turned out to be kind of a lovely dad who has left his middle aged children still trying to come to terms with where they stand with their no deceased father. Like even if you don't like the show, it's kind of hard to argue that it's the product of EXECUTIVES.

Prior to this episode, if you had put a gun to my head and asked me to tell you the name of Mario Van Peebles' character in Highlander III, I would have closed my eyes and accepted death. I don't think a lot of people really appreciate how well versed in cinema these four guys are. They will always bring up some oft forgotten film or character actor randomly in any episode and mention every movie they've ever been in better than the IMDB Tribune ever could and I always took it for granted. But what blew my mind was that in this latest mailbag episode Cabin remembers, off the top of his head, the year Adam Sandler's Click was released. Why would you waste precious space in your brain for such incredibly useless information unless it's a byproduct of your deep love and appreciation for the art of cinema and its history.
