A simple schooner with sixteen souls aboard has strayed too close to the frigid northern seas, and the merciless ice closes in without warning. As supplies dwindle, tempers shorten, and the chill specter of mortality looms large, what secrets - and darkness - will it reveal aboard?

Icebound is an open-setup game of Mafia for 16 players.

General Rules:

Standard Mafia Rules are in effect for this game. Don't be a dick. Specific addendums follow:
- Twilight posting after the hammer is acceptable, but the thread will be closed when the flip is posted.
- Please play to your win condition!
- No PM comparing shenanigans - format, capital letters, whatever.
- Seriously, don't be a dick. I will nudge you via PM if I feel you're going beyond the pale.
In general, no replacements will be allowed beyond Day 1 - please don't sign up if you aren't going to put actual effort into this game. (I understand that Life Happens sometimes - in extreme cases please PM me and we'll take it from there.)
- I politely request that unredeemable lurkers/no-content shitposters not sign up for this game, and reserve the right to turn you down if you do so!
Days will be ~48-60 hours (but will grow shorter as the game goes on) and Nights will be ~12-24 hours. Nights will be closed but I'll reopen the thread promptly.
Votes will be by majority, and no-lynches are possible.
The Anti-Lurking Rules v3.0 will be in effect for this game. Please don't make me enforce them with a tightly tuned setup like this

That question is also to Pod. In open setups people often claim mass claiming is against what the mod would want. I want to know where we stand pre game if possible so it isn't even an issue.

I imagine it will be like every other open setup.

People will claim if they want to. Saying they can't claim D1 makes it not really mafia.

Although I'm going to be a jerk and say don't discuss it much more till game starts - I don't want anyone who has already signed up to feel pressured into a weird non-mafia situation. If you go that direction after the game begins, sure. Working out a covenant pregame is probably a bit far.

What are opinions on mass claiming now before game starts?

Right now, without having received a PM, my analysis is that a D1 massclaim is balanced between Scum and Town, benefiting both. That balance becomes disrupted to favor one side or the other as the game progresses, depending on who dies when, and what claims are forced out of people as they near being lynched (lynched power roles don't get a back-up 2nd chance, only nightkilled TPR's). A massclaim is guaranteed at some point, but the timing of that is a big part of the skill curve here, and where some of the fun comes from.

A D1 massclaim just makes the Scum and SK all claim Backup, and gives the Town 5 Confirmed Town opinions, but it also narrows the night action targeting pool so that it is less likely Cop results will be generated/communicated (more likely killed or jailed). And since the Doc/Jailer can't self-protect, they are also more vulnerable after a massclaim.

So my un-aligned position is that a massclaim is more fun and strategically interesting if it waits for later in the game.

I hope everyone reads the open setup document closely so they don't accidentally make bad strategic moves
