Hi GIP! I only lurk the current events thread because you fucks make the most sense and align with my world view. Hail RS-28 Satan 2.

Some questions that I was going to post in the lurkers dumb questions thread.

- do you get a choice what ribbons you wear on your dress uniforms? Some of the pictures I see of high ranking officers make it look like they're wearing every participation ribbon ever handed out to anyone who looked at a photo of a war zone.

- I had a short rotation as a contractor rolling out AV on an AF base in the states, and it seemed like I only ever interacted with E3 and above. Is it common to keep your newer guys out of the office buildings and on gate detail or the like?

Yes and no. Yes in that you're supposed to, no in that only the most stupid autistic motherfuckers are going to be like "let me see your ERB" and check to make sure. In other words, yes because the military is full of stupid autistic motherfuckers.

It's also like wearing a resume on your shirt.

Plus the bigger your ribbon stack the bigger your dick and who doesn't want a bigger dick?

For the most part yes. Generally the lower your rank the more details you'll be put on. To me an e3 is indistinguishable from an e1 as far as how they get treated, so what you're describing is kind of surprising unless the unit was just overloaded with e1 and e2. Or maybe the Air Force works different idk.

I don't know about the air force, but in the army, if you couldn't talk your way into E2 or E3 in your contract, you were probably in line for a poo poo job. So those dumb E1s and E2 you never see are on lovely details.

Also, E1s move on to E2s usually in 6 months time, then to E3 another 6 months to a year later. People just don't stay at those lowest ranks unless they're PT potatoes or Article collectors, and those guys were getting pushed out over the last decade. Lots stall at E4 because gently caress the army I'm getting out states of mind. And training time eats into a lot of those time in service requirements. My boot and AIT were about 6 months. I contracted E2, pinned E3 after being in Korea about 3 months. My brother contracted E2 and his training was 9 months or so long. Long enough that I think he pinned E3 pretty much immediately at his first unit in Korea. By immediately I mean two or three months after because army has to army up everything.

In the Air Force, E-1 and E-2 are rarely seen in the wild. That early, you're promoted very quickly...think of it as positive reenforcement. As long as you're not completely loving up, you make E-2 after six months, then E-3 ten months later. Figure a fair amount of that time is spent in training for your career field, and waiting between different phases of that training. If you did JROTC in high school or have X college credits, you can even skip E-1 or E-2 and graduate basic training as an E-3.

As far as ribbons go, the rule is that if you're going to wear them, you wear all of them that you're authorized. That wasn't always the case, which is why you look at photos of WWII generals and they have 3 or 6 or whatever...they've got more, but the rule wasn't written yet. That said, the US gives away medals and ribbons for goddamned anything, so unless you know which ones actually mean something, don't be fooled. Look for the quality instead of quantity. Hell, I was in for about 8 years and I think my stack is 5 full rows. Only a couple have the slightest tinge of pride associated with earning them. Another Air Force tradition is that if you're wearing blues, only enlisted wear their ribbons on the shirt. It's optional, but for whatever reason enlisted wear them, officers do not. That's shirt only, if you're wearing the full service dress with the jacket, they're mandatory.

Edit: In my time I saw exactly ONE E-1.

On some navy uniforms, ribbons/medals are prescribed. Working uniforms, such as the old dungarees, utilities, and wash khakis (:rip:) and current NWUs & coveralls, do not ever have ribbons worn on them. Service uniforms you can wear your full rack of ribbons or just your highest 3 ribbons/medals earned on a single line. Dress uniforms, iirc, full ribbons except when wearing medals. Some functions call for mini medals but no one cares unless you're senior enlisted or an officer.

ASAPI

I invented the line.

Only unit awards are "required" to be worn, along with regimental/branch affiliation. Its always fun when you get your regimental affiliation changed so it doesn't match the branch, makes heads explode.

All that being said, they "highly encourage" you to wear everything. That's when you break out the reg and dig up obscure poo poo to put on the uniform. They LOVE that.

Since the Army decided to put everyone's rank on their chest, can they finally get rid of the stupid specialist rank? At the joint hospital I used to be at, it was a pain in the rear end telling them from an O5 in the dark when the long walk from the parking lot was unlit.

"Looks kind of old and worn down...probably Lt Col."

"Looks young and clueless...probably enlisted."

Every other branch does just fine with all their E4s at the same rank/title. Corporal vs specialist is a dumb distinction and only exists because the army is dumb. It made sense when you had up to spec 9 as an alternative career path. Now its pointless.

FYI air force e-4 is not a nco. I'm not disputing your point but if you turned all of the specialists currently in the army Corporal that would uhh cause some problems. You just made everyone in the army that had been in 2 years without being flagged into NCOs. They should bring back the specialist career path anyway.

And what's the big deal if they are? There are gently caress tons of petty officers in the navy that are pushbuttoned (automatic E4 or E5). The leadership roles are filled by senior E4s or E5s anyways. There is no good reason to keep specialist other than army history.

Lets not act like being a corporal is really some big deal.
