The evil rock music one reminds me of an actual super lovely personal failing I had irl. In the olden days I was friends with this kid who was a huge dick, but honestly alright despite that. We were assholes back to him, but he was an important part of the dynamics of our group of high school morons.

One day it turned out he started going to one of these chick style churches because some hot chick invited him. It was a total gently caress job where they convinced him to ritually burn hundreds of bucks worth of really good music, I mean this dude had like a thousand or 500 cds back when that poo poo was NOT cheap. I mean, giant binders of the fuckers. And he had metal classics as well as a lot of really esoteric poo poo too. I had a fuckin cassette player for christssake, this was when dial up was a big deal, it was hard to find the weird good bands that never got popular.

Anyway, we were all like "what the gently caress dude, I would have bought some of those, you don't have to destroy them," etc. Whatever, weird but maybe not that big a deal. He started trying to integrate people from that church into our group and it was a poo poo show. I remember me and this other dude giving one of his church friends a ride home and he started off on this crazy tangent about women and dick size and all this whole nutso thing, and I'm like "holy poo poo dude" making sideways eye contact with my friend who's driving, and this guy is just going and going, really hosed up misogynistic poo poo, talking about whores, sluts, stretched out pussys, really offputting disturbing poo poo. We weren't even replying to him or interacting with the dude and just dumped him off at his destination and went back. Never saw him again.

We had a couple cool chicks in the group and they really hated the fucker and wanted nothing to do with him, and I was like yeah he's a goddamn creep. Like I was a typical goony loser and even I understood that he had really hosed ideas about women.

Our guy ended up drifting out of our group into Jesus land.

That whole scene was bad news and insane. Years later we found out they had pressured our guy into groveling on the ground literally crawling towards a crucifix begging for mercy and poo poo like that. He ended up sharing a house with a bunch of them and the righteous Christians basically conned him out of a ton of money they spent on drugs. Later on he got roped into investing in some kind of Christian dance school that ended up evaporating, along with his cash. Even later I guess came out as trans and they all shunned him. Dunno if he has any friends or family at all now, dunno how he ended up.

I talked about it with people I knew from those days and they're all mostly like "there's nothing we could have done," but I think I could have done something, said something. I legit think finding Jesus ruined his life way worse than it would have been otherwise. I'll feel terrible every time I think about it for the rest of my life, I think. All the signs were there, it was obvious that this was bad news and he was going the wrong way, but I never said anything when I knew better.

The take away is that if u see something, say something, and this story combined with other stuff I've experienced with this kinda religious person has convinced me that they absolutely cannot be trusted in any way and will completely gently caress you over for any reason.

I knew a couple of people who got super-religious right around the end of high school or soon thereafter. It's a weird time, especially for aimless people struggling to figure out a direction in life. It's a shame he wandered into the snare of evangelical Christianity though. Those are some pretty toxic beliefs, especially for impressionable teenagers.

I was a teenage metalhead, so I've always loved the Christian anti-rock material because it's just so ridiculous and out-of-touch, but I've read and heard quite a few stories about people who've grown up with parents that believed in that nonsense, and it was no joke to them. That recent thread on the 1980's Satanic Panic had some prime examples:

https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3809323

That reminds me, The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years has a short segment with a woman named Darlyne Pettinicchio from the Back in Control Training Center, an organization that specialized in deprogramming teenage metal fans during the 80's. Jello Biafra frequently mentioned them in his old spoken word albums. I can't find anything recent on them, so they either disbanded, or changed the name of their Christian boot-camps. Here's an old article:

The Crusaders #17 - The Prophet (1988)

Returning from Lebanon, an ABC news correspondent named Rosco runs into an old war buddy at the airport. His pal is Tim the crusader, and he's got Jim and Alberto with him. They all get to talking, and Alberto explains how Islam is actually a Vatican creation, and the Moon god is a phony. Also, the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II was a false flag.

This is the sixth chapter in the Alberto saga, and the last to be published in the Crusaders series (Alberto Rivera released a seventh volume under his own A.I.C. imprint).

The Great Holocaust I (Alberto Part 7): The Martyr Story of Klark Butterfield (1994)

This one isn't a Crusaders comic, but it is a continuation of the Alberto series so I figured I'd include it. It was published by Alberto Rivera's own AIC Ministries, and the quality of the art and printing pales in comparison to the earlier comics drawn by Fred Carter and written/ published by Chick.

It tells the story of former Catholic priest named Clark Butterfield. He wrote an anti-Vatican book called Night Journey to Rome and sent the manuscript to Chick Publications. They declined to publish it, but Alberto thought it was so important that he released it himself under his own AIC Ministries. The material was so explosive that the Vatican and Freemasons ordered Clark's doctor to murder him.

The back cover shows an eighth Alberto comic titled The Plot of Holocaust. As far as I know, it was never published by either Chick Publications or AIC, and most likely never got past the planning stages. The drawing on the cover is from the Crusaders comic Double Cross.

The Big Betrayal (1981)

The Jesuits orchestrated the Civil War and murdered Abraham Lincoln.

This comic is based on a book called Fifty Years in the Church of Rome by Charles Chiniquy. He was a Catholic priest who became disillusioned with the church, was excommunicated, and then repeatedly brought up on false charges by agents of the Vatican. Abraham Lincoln successfully defended Chiniquy in court, which angered the Jesuits enough to assassinate him nine years later.

These are notable for the terrible art, incoherent plot, and portrayal of Jesus with gaping stigmata! Sadly, they are out of print.

They are the only comics from Chick Publications without art by Fred Carter. They are also the only comics that Jack didn't write. I have no clue what inspired their publication, but they sold very poorly, and the series was quickly cancelled. As a result, they are pretty tough to find these days. That's a shame, because they really are something special.

I'll come back to these later. They deserve a closer look, but I want to get through the rest of the Crusaders series first.

Jonah is currently unavailable. It was printed on thick, glossy paper and became too expensive to keep in stock. Besides the Overcomers series, it is only comic from Chick Publications that is out pf print. It's the most recent of the miscellaneous, non-Crusaders comics to be published.

As I mentioned earlier, almost twenty years passed between the publication of Crusaders #17 in 1988 and issue #18 in 2007. During that period, Fred Carter was busy drawing the artwork for most of the Bible series of tracts (1984-1992), followed by the hundreds of detailed oil paintings he created for the 2003 film Light of the World:

Anyway, back to the adventures of America's favorite evangelical missionary couple, Timothy and James.

The Crusaders #18 - The Enchanter (2007)

Darlene's husband Jake is murdered by Mormon "Avenging Angels" in retribution for leaving the church. Terrified that she'll be next, Darlene reaches out to the Crusaders for help. They send her money so she can get a bus ticket to her mother's house. Tim and Jim decide they ought to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, so they seek out an ex-Mormon named David Franks, who tells them all about Joseph Smith and the sinister origins of the his evil church. The comic gives no real resolution to Jake's death, but we can assume his killers will go to Hell, so I guess that's punishment enough.

The Crusaders #19 - Unwanted (2010)

This comic tells the story of Chaplain Dann Slator, who also appeared in the 1982 tracts Reverend Wonderful, and The Letter. Born to drunken parents who didn't want him, Dann grew up during the depression and fought in World War II, narrowly avoiding death numerous times. He was a hard-drinking troublemaker, even long after the war ended. That all changed when he saw an artist give a presentation about the end-times. Dann got saved, and started spreading the gospel by passing out tracts.

The artist isn't named in the comic, but it is clearly supposed to be Jack Chick. Even before Chick started publishing tracts, he made up a series of cartoons similar to what eventually became This Was Your Life! to use as a visual aid when preaching his message. Anyway, Dann started passing out Chick tracts soon after Jack started making them, and has reportedly given out over a million of them over the years. He's still at it as far as I know.

You Don't Know Jack by David W. Daniels (2017)

I received my copy a few days ago. It's a quick read, full of pictures, and a large portion of it is a defense of Alberto Rivera for some reason, but there's still plenty of interesting stuff. It's basically a print version of the Chick Publications video series of the same name:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=totLO3sV6-Y&t=5s

I found the descriptions of his family life especially interesting. His parents made fun of him for becoming a Christian. His daughter was ridiculed at school, got involved in drugs and witchcraft, and died before the age of 50. I also found it interesting that he wasn't a regular churchgoer.

There is also plenty of talk about where his beliefs came from and how they evolved.

Apparently Fang predates the tracts. He added him into the background of his drawings because he loved animals, especially his dogs. Also, the cat's name is Goldie.

Author David Daniels talks about how he started helping Chick write the tracts starting with the Bob series in 2000 or so. He also helped write the comics starting with The Enchanter. He never mentions who will be drawing the tracts once Chick's backlog runs out, but he'll be writing them. His ideas mirror Chick's pretty closely, so that seems fitting.

I preferred your last avatar, so I put it back. My apologies to the pedo who purchased your last one (it's always projection).
There have been a lot of Chick tract parodies over the years. I figured I'd post a couple of the more notable ones.

Head Shop or Dead Shop? (1974)

This parody tract was written by P.J. O' Rourke and illustrated by Jeff Cox. It appeared in the December 1974 issue of National Lampoon magazine.

Devil Doll? (1989)

This parody tract was written and illustrated by Dan Clowes, and originally published in the first issue of his comic book Eightball. It was later reprinted in tract form and included in Jello Biafra's 1994 spoken word album Beyond the Valley of the Gift Police.
