NYC Job Seeker Education: BS 4-year degree in mechanical engineering Experience: ~9 years total professional experience. In Windows-space primarily for the past 2.5 years, basically doing escalated application support for IIS/SQL backend sites. Using a lot of PowerShell to manage IIS across a large amount of web servers (Windows 2008/2012 R2). I'm working on Wall Street currently, supporting some of the biggest investment banks in the world. Before that did a few years in the pharma space, same thing really but more so with Oracle and Tomcat. Again, I was the primary engineer for some of the biggest pharma and biotech companies in the US. Before that was an IT generalist and did a lot of network-focused work as well. What I'm looking for : A non-customer facing role where I can be a systems administrator. I would prefer to get into Linux, but understand if it's Windows or even a hybrid environment. Web application support is fine, but really any type of work that requires the day-to-day management of servers is preferred. DevOps would be nice as I've done some project work with that as well. What I'm NOT looking for : Helpdesk, Management (not looking for a TAM role or project management), Windows-only (I want to transition into Linux, and I'm in it for the long haul, so no Windows-only environments). Hey all, I have a lot of Taiwanese programmer friends who dream of getting out of Taiwan, or want to start programming remotely. The pay here is abysmal (less than 25k USD/year ~$10/hour, but the social safety net isn't terrible for now) and a lifetime of island fever has many of them looking at Germany, Japan, and English speaking countries. I'm looking for some advice on how to help talented non-native speakers navigate English oriented programming sites. It really is a walled off island. I'm thinking of starting with some "code-for-hire" websites, but am not sure which ones would be good. I've started helping them to re-write their resumes, but they've been somewhat discouraged by the feedback they've gotten. One friend was told by a friend in Japan that, "he read my resume, but doesn't know what I did". I tried to stick to the 1-2 page rule. I've encouraged them to create some github accounts since most of their programs are under closed source and most of them are not programming in the sexiest, newest languages. How foolish of an errand is this? I'll sanitize a resume and post it here.

Every country has different expectations for resumes/cvs and your friends should learn what's the norm where they're applying, then tailor their resume/cv to hit the key points of that specific job posting. Second, they should be looking at visa requirements in advance because there's no point in applying for jobs when you can't legally move there for work. The above is just general job-seeking advice. Code-for-hire is an option, but I honestly know nothing about it. I'd be weary of getting stuck in a rut doing only small part-time work. An alternative for your friends is to position themselves in a multinational company that could transfer them overseas with an accompanying pay increase and the ability to make connections for later overseas work. Taipei and Hsinchu have dozens of such companies: Canonical, Mozilla, MediaTek come to mind. It's a crapshoot whether you'll get such a job. I'm familiar with how poor Taiwanese programmer salaries are. It's a bummer all-around because many of them are very talented but for $25-45k USD a year, which barely covers food and housing in Taipei, there's not a lot of motivation to stay in the field. Personally, I wish I could move *to* Taipei from the US; I'm really fond of it. The income hit would be crazy though. The only way I think I could make it work would be to learn how to start my own company because no employer pays enough as-is.

Not sure what's the best thread to put this in... My friend graduated with a degree in Network Engineering / System Administrator but has been working in IT tech support for 5 years since he graduated. I passed his resume along to my boss for a tech support question and then he goes, "Changed my mind; we don't need more tech support but we go need a junior network admin" Any suggestions for things he should brush up on for interview questions? I'm a programmer so I have no idea what one would be asked for such a role.

I have at least one, possibly two positions open. Title is technically QA engineer but my existing QA engineer is mostly doing SRE stuff and working on our continious integraton systems. So there's a lot more than just manual drudgery of testing. Position is in south bay California, pay is average to competitive depending on your skill level. If you're good, we have some pretty interesting projects on the shelf for you to own, if you're really good you can design your own projects. Our product is a datacenter analytics product with many large customers and good cash flow so we're not a facebook for dogs startup. This is my current position and I do a wide variety of things in a pretty targeted field. Bulk of my work involves StorNext SANs and media asset management systems and I do a fair amount of project work (installing and configuring systems) though there is some helpdesk type work which is mainly responding to our current client requests via Salesforce! Experience with Linux (CentOS) is a plus as is experience with fibre switches. We just switched from QLogic to Brocade switches so all new installs will be using the brocade switches. As far as travel is concerned: we have clients all over the country but a good chunk of them are on the east coast. I personally support the NYC area but travel to Philly and Baltimore occasionally. Still trying to bounce back after getting laid off, so I should bump this up  Job Seeker My experience: 3.5 years total in pre/post sales implementation, databases, and technical support. Primarily worked in Windows environments (managing/configuring AD, SQL Server, IIS) plus general troubleshooting/config of desktops, laptops, and low level networking/VPN issues. Ok, lets see if anyone bites. Job Seeker. Education: Recent graduate (Dec. 2016) from Rutgers University with a BS in Comp. Sci. Experience: Part time Pro Advisor at Codecademy (tech education website with interactive lessons). What I do there is help users debug code, explain concepts, and give general advice. I mostly help with front end stuff (HTML/CSS, JS, jQuery) along with a few languages (Java, Python, JS) as well as Git and UNIX/LINUX command line. Apart from that, it's mainly side projects. I'm working on a personal website/blog using Polymer on the front, Node/Express/Mongo on the back as a data api. Apart from that, I've done machine learning in Python, some Unity scripting (C#), and a cellular automata sim project in Java. I did win an award at HackNY F2016 for a dumb audio parser project I made in python, if that counts for anything. It was just a joke, we weren't supposed to win anything... Job Seeker Education: BS Computer Engineering Experience: ~9 years in software dev. Spent a few years doing malware analysis and exploit related development & reverse engineering, then the last 5 working on a tool suite for processing data from various document formats (i.e. extracting content from large numbers of word docs and pdfs at a time to be indexed, searched and consumed later). Bulk of my experience is in C and Python, but I've also written some C++ and Java in a professional capacity. No professional web dev experience, but I've written a bunch of dumb one-off Django and Flask apps on the side and played around with react a bit. Also spent the last 2.5 years working full-time remote. Looking for: Pretty much any dev job that allows 100% remote. I'm not opposed to doing web dev but I'm not super interested in the front-end side of things. I'm helping out the recruiter who placed me at my previous job scout candidates for a role. I don't know too much other than what I have here, but I'm more than happy to share his contact info for interested candidates. Who it is/Where it is:A bank headquarters in Newark, NJ. I don't know the name, but they are a small bank with 5-6 branches in the Tri-state, and growing. Your work would be in Newark. What it is: Windows system administration, a junior sysadmin taking over tasks and projects from the current VP of IT, to whom you'd report. The VP wants someone to eventually grow into his role eventually. What they're looking for: Windows sysadmin skills, familiarity/working knowledge of Powershell, familiarity with VMware vSphere virtualization. A good understanding of working with the business to help IT be a partner in growth and operations is a plus, as is good communication skills. Salary/benefits: $80k plus or minus for base salary, standard PTO package (NJ doesn't have paid sick leave like NYC does, so you'd probably have 15 vacation days, likely bank and federal holidays off as well), discretionary bonus. Two regions now, three or four by 2018. Administration of an Active Directory domain. Used for computer policy management and our central user directory. And I know some see this as a gimmick, but the way I see it is we're all adults - get your work done, and take the time off you want/need. I took six weeks off the first year I was hired.
