NYC Job Seeker

Education: BS 4-year degree in mechanical engineering

Experience: ~9 years total professional experience. In Windows-space primarily for the past 2.5 years, basically doing escalated application support for IIS/SQL backend sites. Using a lot of PowerShell to manage IIS across a large amount of web servers (Windows 2008/2012 R2). I'm working on Wall Street currently, supporting some of the biggest investment banks in the world. Before that did a few years in the pharma space, same thing really but more so with Oracle and Tomcat. Again, I was the primary engineer for some of the biggest pharma and biotech companies in the US. Before that was an IT generalist and did a lot of network-focused work as well.

What I'm looking for : A non-customer facing role where I can be a systems administrator. I would prefer to get into Linux, but understand if it's Windows or even a hybrid environment. Web application support is fine, but really any type of work that requires the day-to-day management of servers is preferred. DevOps would be nice as I've done some project work with that as well.

What I'm NOT looking for : Helpdesk, Management (not looking for a TAM role or project management), Windows-only (I want to transition into Linux, and I'm in it for the long haul, so no Windows-only environments). Flexible with some of this stuff depending on the role.

Where I live : NYC area

Where I'm looking : NYC area, Manhattan preferred but not Long Island. Just know I don't own a car.

When I can start : Would give 2 weeks to my current employer.

Requirements : Full time, Permanent role with benefits, etc.

Hey all, I have a lot of Taiwanese programmer friends who dream of getting out of Taiwan, or want to start programming remotely. The pay here is abysmal (less than 25k USD/year ~$10/hour, but the social safety net isn't terrible for now) and a lifetime of island fever has many of them looking at Germany, Japan, and English speaking countries.

I'm looking for some advice on how to help talented non-native speakers navigate English oriented programming sites. It really is a walled off island. I'm thinking of starting with some "code-for-hire" websites, but am not sure which ones would be good.

I've started helping them to re-write their resumes, but they've been somewhat discouraged by the feedback they've gotten. One friend was told by a friend in Japan that, "he read my resume, but doesn't know what I did". I tried to stick to the 1-2 page rule.

I've encouraged them to create some github accounts since most of their programs are under closed source and most of them are not programming in the sexiest, newest languages.

How foolish of an errand is this? I'll sanitize a resume and post it here.

Every country has different expectations for resumes/cvs and your friends should learn what's the norm where they're applying, then tailor their resume/cv to hit the key points of that specific job posting.

Second, they should be looking at visa requirements in advance because there's no point in applying for jobs when you can't legally move there for work.

The above is just general job-seeking advice.

Code-for-hire is an option, but I honestly know nothing about it. I'd be weary of getting stuck in a rut doing only small part-time work.

An alternative for your friends is to position themselves in a multinational company that could transfer them overseas with an accompanying pay increase and the ability to make connections for later overseas work. Taipei and Hsinchu have dozens of such companies: Canonical, Mozilla, MediaTek come to mind. It's a crapshoot whether you'll get such a job.

I'm familiar with how poor Taiwanese programmer salaries are. It's a bummer all-around because many of them are very talented but for $25-45k USD a year, which barely covers food and housing in Taipei, there's not a lot of motivation to stay in the field.

Personally, I wish I could move *to* Taipei from the US; I'm really fond of it. The income hit would be crazy though. The only way I think I could make it work would be to learn how to start my own company because no employer pays enough as-is.

Hiring NYC - Senior Creative Developer

Hey, I'm a creative dev here at Undertone, a digital advertising agency where we create a lot of high impact responsive cross screen creative.

We're looking for people who are independent problem solvers that can take a designed concept and bring it to life, addressing any technical problems along the way. A strong front end development background is ideal, but so is a good a sense of design and motion. We generally have a lot more functionality in our ads than in standard IAB units, and because they are very responsive it really is an even split between technical know how and ability to creatively solve design issues as they come up. Experience with other libraries is a major plus.

As always, the more examples of work you have, the better. A resume can look great, but without specific pieces and details to back it up it's difficult to take at face value. We're not looking for freelancers or remote work, so please don't apply unless you're local.

If you think you'd be a good fit apply here: http://app.jobvite.com/m?3A9RmiwJ

Please include your resume and your site / examples of your work. Thanks!

Not sure what's the best thread to put this in... My friend graduated with a degree in Network Engineering / System Administrator but has been working in IT tech support for 5 years since he graduated.

I passed his resume along to my boss for a tech support question and then he goes, "Changed my mind; we don't need more tech support but we go need a junior network admin"

Any suggestions for things he should brush up on for interview questions? I'm a programmer so I have no idea what one would be asked for such a role.

I have at least one, possibly two positions open. Title is technically QA engineer but my existing QA engineer is mostly doing SRE stuff and working on our continious integraton systems. So there's a lot more than just manual drudgery of testing.

Position is in south bay California, pay is average to competitive depending on your skill level. If you're good, we have some pretty interesting projects on the shelf for you to own, if you're really good you can design your own projects. Our product is a datacenter analytics product with many large customers and good cash flow so we're not a facebook for dogs startup.

Here is the post, again.

What I'm NOT looking for: DBA, BA, anything where it's not considered socially acceptable to get excited about statistics.
Where I live: Oklahoma.

Hiring - Baltimore, MD - Systems Engineer

My employer is looking for another Systems Engineer for our Baltimore office. We're a media focused MSP/VAR. This is my current position and I do a wide variety of things in a pretty targeted field. Bulk of my work involves StorNext SANs and media asset management systems and I do a fair amount of project work (installing and configuring systems) though there is some helpdesk type work which is mainly responding to our current client requests via Salesforce! Experience with Linux (CentOS) is a plus as is experience with fibre switches. We just switched from QLogic to Brocade switches so all new installs will be using the brocade switches.

As far as travel is concerned: we have clients all over the country but a good chunk of them are on the east coast. I personally support the NYC area but travel to Philly and Baltimore occasionally. Travel and accommodations are taken care of by the company and any expenses will be reimbursed during a trip.

You can find a full description and application here: https://chesa.com/careers/systems-engineer/ and you can PM me with any questions.

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

Still trying to bounce back after getting laid off, so I should bump this up :sigh:

Job Seeker

My experience: 3.5 years total in pre/post sales implementation, databases, and technical support. Primarily worked in Windows environments (managing/configuring AD, SQL Server, IIS) plus general troubleshooting/config of desktops, laptops, and low level networking/VPN issues.

Most recent positions were implementation roles working with enterprise clients (configuration, troubleshooting, training, jQuery/JavaScript/HTML/CSS, some VBscript). C++ was the first programming language I learned and I'm not averse to scripting/light programming.

Education: BS in Finance

What I'm looking for: Similar client facing positions like consulting, or pre/post-sales implementation more in a technical capacity. Also ok with technical business analyst, sysadmin, and support engineer positions. Very much looking to get more hands on with Linux and AWS since I'm currently teaching myself both (especially looking to get certs for AWS). Willing to take a tier 1/support/MSP position to get that experience.

What I'm NOT looking for: Sales/quota driven positions, call center environment

Where I'm looking: Austin, TX. Open to relocation.

When I can start: ASAP/negotiable

Requirements: Full time, competitive salary and benefits (PTO/remote etc) all negotiable. Can consider contract case by case.

Ok, lets see if anyone bites.

Job Seeker.

Education: Recent graduate (Dec. 2016) from Rutgers University with a BS in Comp. Sci.

Experience: Part time Pro Advisor at Codecademy (tech education website with interactive lessons). What I do there is help users debug code, explain concepts, and give general advice. I mostly help with front end stuff (HTML/CSS, JS, jQuery) along with a few languages (Java, Python, JS) as well as Git and UNIX/LINUX command line.

Apart from that, it's mainly side projects. I'm working on a personal website/blog using Polymer on the front, Node/Express/Mongo on the back as a data api. Apart from that, I've done machine learning in Python, some Unity scripting (C#), and a cellular automata sim project in Java. I did win an award at HackNY F2016 for a dumb audio parser project I made in python, if that counts for anything. It was just a joke, we weren't supposed to win anything...

Looking For: Full-time/internship doing web dev or software engineering work.
I'll consider anything related that you think I might be a fit for, I'm open to opportunities.

Where: I'm not picky. I currently live in Jersey between Princeton and New Brunswick, so NY or Philly would be really nice. But I'll relocate as long as it isn't the butt end of nowhere. General preference is Pacific Coast or North East.

When: ASAP, I've got nothing to do.

Yeah I'll look into that, thanks. I don't really have a preference of industry, since my understanding is that it just changes some of the design requirements and the process is about the same.

Waiting for a train, I needed a shit. You won't bee-lieve what happened next

Essex UK student near Colchester wanted. I suspect we will be able to get you more than min wage, give me a shout! The below is a c&p of something I just posted on a uni of essex forum.

e: if you know anyone in the area please pass along

quote:

Hi i'm a senior programmer/systems analyst/developer/dogsbody for a company just outside of Colchester which specialises in vehicle finance but for some reason also owns a bunch of children's play centres across the UK.

We would be very interested in getting a first or 2nd year computer science (or related) student to come and do some real life work. Its a great chance to actually get some work experience so when you go out into the real world you don't have that horrible problem of 'i cant get any experience because I don't have any experience' which I remember very well from my early career. I have a bunch of actual valuable work for you to do which we don't have the manpower for.

I'm especially interested in strong web-developers, I'm more of a back-end systems developer so I can just about get by with websites etc, but lets be honest I'm not terribly good at it

I will need you to actually know how to program, properly, I'll ask you provide a pseudocode solution to a basic problem in the live interview. If you understood that last sentence you will probably pass the test!

I'm relatively sure I can get my boss to actually pay you if you get the gig, so this isn't some unpaid slave labour deal, but I suspect it will not be much, just bear that in mind.

If interested please reply in this thread or say hi on skype on pauldevbrighton.

Regards,

Paul.

Are you looking at me Senpai?

Grimey Drawer
I'm helping out the recruiter who placed me at my previous job scout candidates for a role. I don't know too much other than what I have here, but I'm more than happy to share his contact info for interested candidates.

Who it is/Where it is:A bank headquarters in Newark, NJ. I don't know the name, but they are a small bank with 5-6 branches in the Tri-state, and growing. Your work would be in Newark.

What it is: Windows system administration, a junior sysadmin taking over tasks and projects from the current VP of IT, to whom you'd report. The VP wants someone to eventually grow into his role eventually.

What they're looking for: Windows sysadmin skills, familiarity/working knowledge of Powershell, familiarity with VMware vSphere virtualization. A good understanding of working with the business to help IT be a partner in growth and operations is a plus, as is good communication skills.

Salary/benefits: $80k plus or minus for base salary, standard PTO package (NJ doesn't have paid sick leave like NYC does, so you'd probably have 15 vacation days, likely bank and federal holidays off as well), discretionary bonus. Usual metro area benefits (health/dental, I think they do pretax transit/parking as well.

How to apply: PM me or post your email. I'll periodically check this thread while the position is open.

JOB POSTING
IT Systems Administrator | San Francisco, CA | Full-time | Onsite

Who am I looking for?
I'm looking to fill my first IT opening. Other than high-level desktop support employees, I was the first IT hire for a staff of 900 employees. As the company is growing, they've realized that data security, automation and administration are important things to have, so I need someone to help as we roll out major changes across the org and keep expanding.

Who are we?
thredUP is, at it's simplest, an online clothing consignment store. Customers can either choose to send in old clothes for cash or credit, or just shop online. We're only doing women's and children's clothes at the moment, sorry guys.

Where are we?
San Francisco, CA as well as locations in San Leandro, CA; Mechanicsburg, PA; Vernon Hills, IL; and Duluth, GA.

Job responsibilities
Management of virtual hosts and networks located in Azure. Two regions now, three or four by 2018.
Administration of an Active Directory domain. Used for computer policy management and our central user directory.
Administration of a Meraki network, full stack. 5 locations now, up to 10 by the end of the year. Looking for someone to help me with administration and deployment of new networks.
Help manage our Nagios system which monitors approximately 600 workstations, network equipment, and whatever else we decide on!
Standard troubleshooting, occasionally you'll answer tickets or reboot something somewhere.
Along with this, I will help you to figure out other responsibilities you can take on. Something that kicks rear end that you love working on that also is awesome for the company.

When?
Just posted the job yesterday. Looking now!

Pay Rate
$80k-$100k/year based on qualifications and experience. That said, I want someone good. There's always room for negotiation.

Skills?
I only have an associates degree. A degree is a plus, but if you can show your skills, I'm happy.
I'm looking for a mid-level employee, so 2-3 minimum years working in IT will be good.
No OS elitists. Be comfortable working with Windows, Mac OS, and to a limited degree, Linux.
You need experience working with Windows Server and an AD environment. Group Policy a must. Powershell even better.
Some experience with CLI. We use Cisco and Juniper (JunOS) equipment.
I'd like you to be familiar with cloud based systems, but it's not critical.
Some familiarity with Git.

Bonus skills:
Scripting. Powershell, python, bash. Any language really - it's easy to transition to others.
Configured SSO before and messed with SAML? Awesome.
Know how to configure IPSec tunnels? Sweet.

Benefits include
Startup in SF. So the layout is open floorplan and desks, very casual. Actually not sure if this is a benefit.
Fizzy water, soda, espresso machine, cold brew on tap, beer on tap in the SF office.
Every Tuesday and Thursday are what the office calls "maker days" where you work from wherever you like. Personally, I start my day with a couple hours at my local coffee shop and then work from home.
Unlimited PTO. And I know some see this as a gimmick, but the way I see it is we're all adults - get your work done, and take the time off you want/need. I took six weeks off the first year I was hired.
Lunch is catered every Wednesday in the office.
Choose your own computer. I personally use the Dell Precision 5510, but you can choose a Macbook Pro if you prefer.

Contact?
Apply here: https://jobs.lever.co/thredup/de4991f5-b87a-4edc-a25b-04e69ad3b301 and shoot me an email at aaron.pollock@thredup.com so I know you're a SA person.

Or if you want to know more, just send me an email and we'll get in touch and talk. Would be no problem to meet for happy hour and talk about what the job is all about.

Edit: holy poo poo, I registered on SA 15 years ago?? Goddamn.

HR  Half the department doesn't have a CompSci degree; it's clearly not a hard requirement.

If there's anyone looking for work in the NY/NJ metro area, I have a really huge list of recruiters that I put together for a couple of friends who were on the market. I'm more than happy to share it.

It's basically a list of any humans who treated me with respect and didn't BS around, and while I make no guarantees as to available positions or if the person is even still with the organization, you can always check out websites and get into systems that way.

I put it in a Google doc. Since it's got phone numbers and email I'd rather not make it public and expose people to spambots. PM me or email mjpbyron at gmail dot com if you want the link to the doc.
