Shade. SHADE. SHADE!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK RU, DRAG RACE IS FINALLY BACK!!!!! Previously on RuPaul's Drag Race... GOD, I MISSED SAYING THAT!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L49tG6sqOME https://twitter.com/dvvidmurray/status/858288639238909952 And in the end, last year's winners were: Bob the Drag Queen, and Alaska Thunderfuck 5000, long may they reign. We've already talked Season 8, so let's talk All-Stars 2. It was great to get what felt like a "real" All-Stars season after the teams debacle a few years ago, but the new twist (the winning Queen chooses who goes home) didn't seem to work as expected. Roxxxy, who did have a chance to rehabilite her image (sorry, Phi Phi, I still want to give you a hug ), stayed in the show way too long. Adore left early. The Producers had way too much power in controlling who went home. Alaska came to win, but ended up taking a lot of criticism for making what was probably the right gameplay moves. Fortunately, she reacted in just the right way and weathered the storm. Despite that, it truly was a fantastic season. Who knew that Tatiana had blossomed like that? More Alyssa is always good, Katya kicked major rear end, Detox was a loving revelation, etc. We had if not the best LSFYL in the show's history, easily one of the Top 3. The "returning queen" episode also rivals the best work the show has ever done. It was Alaska's to lose, and she didn't lose. Check out both seasons, they were great. However, I'm hoping for a closer race this year. What is RuPaul's Drag Race? I've never watched it. RuPaul's Drag Race is a competitive reality show where Drag Queens compete in a series of challenges to prove that they have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to be crowned the Next Drag Superstar and win a lot of money. Episodes are pretty typical for the format: The girls complete in a mini-challenge that usually gives the winner(s) some kind of advantage, a main challenge which can be anything from building costumes to acting to putting civilians in drag, and finally a runway show. After speaking with the judges a winner is chosen who may or may not gain immunity for the following week. Meanhile, the queens deemed to be in the Bottom Two battle it out in the Lip Sync... For Your Life! Ru judges the LSFYL and the loser goes home. I know that it sounds fairly normal, but this show is a joy to watch. The important thing to keep in mind is that these girls are professional Drag Queens. They know how to speak, put on a show, throw shade, and give us the cutting one-liners in the confessionals that we expect. What helps is that while there's at least $100K at the end of the competition the most important thing is making it on the show in the first place. The moment that they are cast the clock has started on the next phase of their career. Until the show dies and/or the drag bubble bursts Season 9's Queens have guaranteed work for at least a year or more after the cast is announced. If they are prepared and savvy enough, they can make a great living off of appearing on the show for a very long time. Just look at some of the people we're going to mention in the third post. Meanwhile, we need this show more than ever. I don't know about you, but the outcome of last year's election didn't feel good. As a gay man, I'm so worried about what may happen over these next few years. We need to stick together as a tribe, all of us queer and queer-friendly folk, and Drag Race can be a strong cultural touchstone in these dark times. Season One premiered in the first year of the Obama Presidency, Season Nine is going to premiere in the first year of Trump. I know they filmed it way before the election, but it was the Drag Queens who started the Stonewall Riots and I'm going to use this show as something to help give me life every week. I can't wait to see what they do next year. And the show is finally in HD for everyone! Thank you, VH1! As for Logo: Bye, Felicia! We're likely to see the following: - The Snatch Game, a take off of the classic TV show Match Game - The Library, whereupon the queens read each other to filth (in a structured format, they do that in an unstructured format all the time) - Singing challenges - Group choreography - Dress construction - Acting challenges - Makeup challenges - Makeovers for non-drag queens - Hot guys in underwear - Etc. RuPaul's Drag Race Untucked shows conversations between the Queens as they await the results of the judging. They gone to a much more relaistic style, and I think the show is better for it. Look for it on YouTube the next day. On Spoilers Fortuantely, there are no major leaks that I know of but then again I stay off of Reddit. Just be aware that fans are crazy about the show, and once the episode is aired for reviews the day of broadcast you can easily find the results. Watch yourself and be careful out there. On top of that, the show is now airing Friday night so if you have plans... make sure you stay off of Social Media until you have a chance to watch the show. The Judges RuPaul Charles The leader of the merry bunch, we thank Ru year after year for coming up with the tasty weekly confection that is RuPaul's Drag Race. What else is there to say? Okay, let's be real. The winner of the show is picked by Ru. The person who is kicked off each week is picked by Ru. This is Ru's baby. It exists to give glory to Ru and help sell her albums (now on iTunes). You thought it was bad to ignore Tim Gunn? DON'T IGNORE RU. (There's talk about creating a sitcom based on Ru's life, let's hope that happens.) Michelle Visage (That picture still is everything forever.) Every once in a while I remember that Michelle wasn't an original judge on the show and I have to pause and collect my wits. The show started to take off once Michelle replaced Merle. Coincidence? If Ru is the Mother, then Michelle is the stern Aunt. Michelle wants all of the queens to reach their potential, so she's willing to be harsh but it always comes from a place of live. She's been friends with RuPaul forever, co-hosted with Ru on her VH1 talk show, has been a more than welcome addition to the judging panel since the third season, and is the one who really goes on the road with the queens to help push the brand. She's fabulous. Carson Kressley, Ross Matthews, and Todrick Hall No news about other regular judges right now, but I would be surprised if these three didn't rotate in at times. LADY GAGA and other guest judges YES, LADY GAGA IS A JUDGE IN THE FIRST EPISODE Others include Lisa Kudrow, Tori Spelling, Kesha, Cheyenne Jackson, Meghan Trainor, the B-52s, Andie MacDowell, Denis O'Hare, Tamar Braxton, Candis Cayne, and Fortune Feimster. The Pit Crew (Sorry, I still prefer the old pit crew.) Eye candy, props, set movers... you call them and they'll show up in their skivvies. Bring on the show! As I mentioned above, making it on the show is the real prize. You are suddenly thrust from obscurity to the spotlight and work should start to roll in for the next year or more. If you have the smarts, you should be able to capatalize on it. Here are a few Queens (and adjacent personalities) that are good examples to follow: Willam - https://www.youtube.com/user/noextrai Willam was the first person to really exploit being on the show. She got herself kicked off, released a hit song that was released and went viral the day after the eviction episode, and hasn't stopped since. We could talk about all of the things that Willam does, but just check out her channel. The Beatdown is the main series on the YouTube channel where Willam reads other videos to filth, but she also has new music videos and other fun stuff. Katya and Trixie Mattel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3iwMuz5tt8EnwNH7RayR1Q Katya was a fan favorite ever since her season, and she has done some amazing YouTube series where she just free associates hilarity, but I have to give credit to the amazing paring of Katya and Trixie. Their show "UNHhhh" (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhgFEi9aNUb2BNrIEecCGXApgeX7Yjwz8, in reverse order for some reason) is a thing of beauty. It's on hold right now, I hope they start up soon with the new season. We need more of Trixie making Katya laugh. (No really, check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZZ51qSHYcE) Katya had a successful KickStarter for a one-person show, Trixie is releasing a Country album soon, and I hope to see more of them together. MORE TO COME Drag Race Adjacent Resources Hey Qween! - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCStjBZ-91yduQVNtsBkjgJQ Johnny McGovern (The Gay Pimp) and Lady Red Couture host a channel where they have all sorts of fun, but they also bring on a lot of Drag Race personalities. Worth a visit, and Lady Red is joing many of our funny girls on the latest Drag Queens of Comedy tour. MORE TO COME Odds and Ends Katya and Trixie giving advice to new Drag Race contestants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyGQYAnBIoY&index=39&list=PLhgFEi9aNUb2BNrIEecCGXApgeX7Yjwz8 Season Three winner Raja's advice to new Drag Race contestants: Pinwiz11 fucked around with this message at 05:13 on Mar 23, 2017 |

I really hope they can keep the race a bit more tight this time around - Bob and Alaska were clear frontrunners almost from day 1. I'd rather have a bait and switch like Ginger/Violet where one stomps the entire competition then doesn't win because she was shady a few times in Untucked

I still don't understand why Logo hasn't capitalized on the success of Drag Race. People loving LOVE these queens. They've gotten close. SO close. They had that stupid round table late night talk show years ago called something like 5 Gays 1 Girl or whatever. They have those commercials with several queens and hottie comedian Matteo Lane. loving combine the two! Get a rotating cast of RPDR alum, 3 or 4 a night, plus 1 guest. And just have a late night round table talk show 4 or 5 nights a week. The queens get exposure. It's super cheap to produce. And most importantly, you get people tuning in to Logo more than 2 months out of the year! The problem is that they don't try very hard at original programming. Every now and then they'll try some stupid reality show like The A List or Fire Island, and the thing is, their core audience, gay men, just don't care. It doesn't matter how hot the guys are, there's always porn. It doesn't matter how dramatic they are, there is always real life. What do gay men like? Drag. Divas. And things that everyone else likes. You can't build a network on just 1 show, and reruns of Golden Girls. Drag Race is on only a small portion of the year. And we've all seen Golden Girls a million times. This is why Logo has failed. They never bothered to even try and understand their target audience. And I know I'm way over generalizing about the gay community. It's just enfuriating that Logo has never even bothered to try at anything at all.

It's pretty wild to see World of Wonder and indie operations like Hey Queen and Beatdown popping up to fill the freaking obvious void of drag queen programming that gays like me endlessly crave Also hell yessss only 24hrs left

I feel like I'm going to be rooting for Nina and Sasha this season. Oh well, time to resubscribe to OutTV for two months. For Canadians, it's a really good deal - $3.99 a month for their online HD stream which goes up immediately after the episode airs on VH1 and I believe they have untucked as well, on the same night.
