So like an idiot, I started randomly throwing rocks off nearby ledges, dropping rocks on top of the markings. Dropping apples onto them, and briefly getting excited due to the puff of smoke. But instead of a korok appearing and the sound of yahaha, all I got for my trouble was some baked apples.

I was walking from Kakariko to Hateno village, and I think I went the "wrong" way. I ended up walking by a giant minotaur and killed him, but it took literally every weapon strength that I had and I only had his sword and shield afterwards. Then I had to constantly eat all the food i had saved, which was mostly uncooked cuz the free armor the king gave didn't protect me enough after my torch went out. Then I found a giant dragon that I had to shoot eyes off of. Is he story relevant later? I don't really understand why, but I did it and got that shrine, and then eventually floated down and finally got to Hateno village.

It will be for click bait, yes.

What makes me sad about these type or articles is a great point that was brought up in Red Letter Media's Previous Recorded talk about BoTW: Constantly breaking weapons forces the player to think creatively instead of just running in with a sword slashing left and right. Use bombs, blow up barrels, sneak attack, kill them one by one with the bow, steal the monsters weapons before they notice, use metal boxes to bash their brains in, ANYTHING then just running in with a single weapon for the whole game. There is always gonna be another weapon so just go nuts.

Playing Twilight Princess and Wind Waker side by side. I like Wind Waker even more now. I actually expected it to go the other way, because Twilight Princess has more dungeons (and arguably more interesting dungeons), but I'm finding almost everything about Twilight Princess outside of those dungeons to be a total slog.

Here's a scenario that I find completely and utterly baffling: after the Goron Mines, you can buy bombs, and you need to do so to progress. Cool! I like bombs! The way you make bomb arrows is kinda awkward but I love that you can do it so I'm happy. I run around Hyrule Field for a bit bombing some obvious things, but I don't want to get too bogged down doing side quests until everything really opens up, so I beeline to the next area. I go wolf mode, I do the wolf things and the Tears of Light part, and then, after a really bad horseback section (unrelated but I hated that), now I need to get rid of all my bombs so I can buy water bombs.

Why does this confuse me so much? I just got these bombs. I haven't had a dungeon to use these bombs in yet. I've been a wolf for most of the time I have had bombs. Why the hell can't they just... work underwater? Why are you making me go replace one of my items before I even really have a chance to use that item for a while? That'd be like giving me the grappling hook at the start of a dungeon in Wind Waker and then making me leave and go buy a hookshot halfway through the same dungeon.

I dunno, I feel like there's a lot about Twilight Princess I just super don't get. I'm going to keep playing because the dungeons really are good poo poo, at least so long as I can put up with the crap it puts me through in between.

Deadspin is "Contrarians: The Website," so I'm not surprised. That said, you can expect a lot of "I hate Breath of the Wild" articles to start dropping, probably with accelerating pace as people notice the amount of attention they draw. There's always going to be hyperbolic backlash against anything that draws widespread hyperbolic love. I don't think people are intentionally hating the game to write clickbait or something, though I do think people who disliked it are going to be more and more likely to publish their takes as time goes on. And you can expect the tone to either be a faux-apologetic "I'm sorry I don't like universally-loved thing" or a smug "I'm part of the minority that hates this thing and that makes me smarter and more discerning than you."

(I recognize the irony of replying to this in the very same post in which I gripe in an exaggerated fashion about a Zelda game.)

Ancient arrows are very much :hellyeah:

The downside, of course, is that enemies don't drop anything when you disintegrate them with an ancient arrow. Guardians still do--ancient arrows just kill them, rather than disintegrating them--but everything else just goes poof.

It seemed vaguely wrong once I got to the minotaur, but there's like a path right next to the fairy fountain by kakariko village that went in the vague direction of the Hateno marker so I kept going. I didn't find any fast warp points or I would have probably would have back out, but I didn't want to make all that progress and not be able to come back.

Has anyone else noticed most movies these days are a hero that is totally overpowered and just stomps his way through all his enemies with little to no setbacks/failures? For some reason I think that's what people like now. This is gonna start sounding like a dad-post but I don't think people have the patience to endure a struggle for the ultimately more satisfying triumph. I think a lot of people would feel just as satisfied running in with unbreakable weapons, mashing Y 100 times and walking away with all the loot, than if they had to kind of fight for it, be a little patient and creative, like BotW forces you to do. Action/Adventure games/movies have all kind of reached this gray equilibrium and if you take away limitless curb stomping and replace it with a bit of patience/creativity it immediately becomes boring and tedious.

It's really just a clickbait link though, for sure. I agree we'll see more of them.
