...She's behind me, isn't she?

quote:

"You do seem to have a good heart." she notes. "From what I've heard, you're not alone in that within your family. Your grandfather also has a great reputation. However... your father doesn't seem to have the best. You know why that is, but do you believe it?"

With a tilted head bearing the expression of someone expecting something amusing to happen soon, Nirian awaits your answer almost a bit too eagerly..

Even fully adorned in his armor as he is, Pryce very visibly stiffens as the Oracle speaks again, and there is an undeniable edge to his voice as he near silently replies,

“I… see how you have earned your reputation, my lady.”

It is, for him, a biting statement. But just as quickly as it comes, it vanishes, or at least it does so on the surface level. What follows is eerily steady in tone, almost entirely flat or deadpan, as if the words spoken have been spoken before. Practiced, recited, prepared even. It is, after all, not the first time that his father’s character has been called into question. Merely the first time that it has been done so directly.

“I shall not deny that compared to my grandfather, my father’s reputation is… doubted, yes. And I will not pretend that I understand all of his reasoning, nor his methods. However, what occurred to Squire Maxwell was an unfortunate accident. Nothing more, and nothing less. Those who claim otherwise slander our family’s name, and are cowards who strike with false rumors alone, for that is all they have as weapons.”

He draws back, finished with his words, at least the ones he will speak openly. But there is a seed of doubt there, though whether or not Pryce recognizes it himself is left for question. Squire Kieran Maxwell. A talented young man with great promise, and from whom all those of the Round Table expected deeds of perhaps even legend. Yet, the young Squire’s life was cut all too short, having been unexpectedly slain in battle during a raid on a bandit stronghold. It was the talk of many a circle for some time, as considering Maxwell’s prowess, it seemed odd for him to fall to mere brigands. And so, eyes and ears turned to the Knight he was assigned to at the time… of course, that was Magnus Halder. The previous Sentinel. Some claim that Magnus left the Squire outnumbered, while others went as far as to claim that he slew the young Maxwell personally in a fit of jealousy. All of it was nonsense, Pryce knew… yet even he couldn’t help but find it odd, deep down.

the history of all dead generations,

quote:

Markus

"Ah, Markus. Hello there. I'm the Oracle of Arwintar. That means I can see the future. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about the past. But, sadly, very few people actually do care about the past. It's a sad state of affairs. So very few people actually learn from their mistakes. Personally, I find the past a very intriguing matter, but perhaps it is because the future is an open book for me." she muses.

"Speaking of which, I have been looking into yours some. There is, however, very little to be found. So far, I have only managed to find an old title, that of 'Old Iron Knight'. As in, that being the full title. It seems that even in Latium, you have been around for quite a while." she explains.

She briefly closes her eyes. "But, listen to me, rambling on like that. Do you even care about your past?"

"Yes." Marcus answered.

...

...

The silence revealed the inadequacy of his answer. Nearing the edge of panic, Marcus did the only thing he knew how to do -- keep talking, and refer to an earlier conversation. "Avagran asked me something similar, thirty-three days ago." Every day was important, and should be remembered. Avagran laughed at him when he'd mentioned this in front of his Father caretaker, earlier, but told him to keep it up as long as he could. Remembering the laughter vexed Marcus, but he continued, "I responded by saying that if he lost one of his books, he would attempt to find the book and reclaim it. He responded by say, 'If one of my books was truly lost, I'd accept that it was gone, because new books can always be written', and... I understood him, I believe I understand him, but..." Marcus' stumbled as he tried to find the right words, "That is the first thing Avagran has told me that I've understood, yet felt was wrong." He shook his head, "Even if I can make a new history my past is still important because as I am now, in many situations I don't know how to act, and thus make mistakes." His mechanical eyes scanned the Oracle's face, "I am not surprised to learn that I-- my past self -- that he held such a title as Old Iron Knight. Yes, he was an honored warrior, and strong, and wise, " and everything I'm not. Marcus shook his head, trying to throw off the feelings of inadequacy.

"I thank you for finding a piece of my history," Marcus fell on one knee, looked the Oracle straight in the eye, and gently grasped one of her hands with his own -- this was the posture used when asking for a favor from people, correct? At least, that's what he'd seen some time ago in the Market Square. -- "if you could keep searching for clues, in the past or future, I would love you." He bowed his head solemnly,

"...Wait." His head snapped back up, "Was that a proper use of the word 'love'? Avagran warned me about that word. I just meant, I just meant that I would really like it a lot, and -- wait," He stood up, his hands searching through his pockets, "the last time I saw someone ask a favor like this, they gave the other person a ring. I don't have a ring; did I make a mistake? Do I owe you a ring? Oh, I'm so sorry if I was rude." Marcus felt embarrassment run through him. The Old Iron Knight would never make silly mistakes like this! "I do not have a ring now. But, next time we meet, I shall bring one to you. Will that make things right? Oh," his head was overheating, a small amount of steam started to emit from his ears, "I do want to do things properly."

"My, that is a very interesting outfit you have there, Signy. Love the bunny ears, especially. I'm somewhat curious if the higher-ups are going to be alright with that, but I never really cared what they think." she notes. "So, you do planeshifting, yes? A very interesting subject matter, I find. You ever been to the spirit world? Lovely place. No humans in it to ruin the beauty of it all. Ahem."

After a brief moment of pondering, she continues. "Well, I'm a boring one-dimensional oracle, so I can't see onto the other planes. Do tell me about that misadventure you had in another plane last month, if you would?"

They're going to tell her how to dress? Signý made a face. "Oh, well, back home I thought it could be good to have something that distracted people... you know, give them something else to notice, something a little silly? Not scary?" Of course she knows, she's an Oracle, Signý admonished herself. "The Spirit World? I think I was there when I was young? For me it's just one other place, though, it kind of gets lost. Sometimes I hear spirits in places where it's quiet and wild. But I'm not supposed to wander far right now, right?"

"And I didn't go anywhere!", Signý protests instinctively before adding, "... is what I would be saying if you weren't an Oracle. Um. This is awkward!" A long pause. "I'm not good at walking, I'm better at calling. I haven't gotten to practice travelling so much, I can end up being in a place that's close to how I feel, I think? But when I heard I was being made to serve, I went to the Freelands. I mean, nobody would tell me that to do there, but... nothing makes sense there, either. There were the stars that tried to get me to join their choir, or there was sailing with shanties on the silk ship of spiders, or... there was the mask that offered to take my face in the labyrinth of mirrors. I mean. I wouldn't have to go back if I had a new face, but... it would have come in my place. I burned it with pyre when it tried to force me. I mean. I didn't choose to come, but... I'm still me. And I'm still worth being."

"It felt like more than just a few days, you get lost there without help, no place is... is. But I learned that running away would have a price, and it wouldn't just be me that paid it. Don't tell everyone, though! I'm not just walking away from this. And I don't to be put in a disjunction cell or anything. I mean, I guess you wouldn't do that, but... I'll be okay. Honest."

...how does that work?

Yami Fenrir posted:

Matakite

"Ah, hello there, Matakite." she greets you. "Seems like you've recovered well from our little duel of precognition."

Waiting for your reaction, she continues. "Oh, don't be so surprised. Of course it was my meddling that led you here. I knew when Helivan would get greedy and edge too close, and when he'd consult your visions, so I simply waited until afterwards to order our wind mages to alter the weather. And well, you know the rest."

But I hear you've made some new friends to replace those unsavory fellows! Just try not to fall into the wrong crowds again, yes? Oh, no need to tell me about them. Instead, tell me more about Helivan. You know him a lot closer than most people. What exactly made him so powerful? You know it wasn't just you."

She had been waiting for quite some time now, but she knew the oracle well enough to not be at all surprised. She got to where she wanted when she wanted to. No point trying to nail a wave to a tree, was there? "Heya, Nirian." Matakite greets the squire with a friendly nod when she finally gets around to addressing the seeress. She hadn't spent a huge amount of time with the oracle since she has escorted her back to the city, but she was still the closest thing to a guide that she had here. Matakite hadn't been given a reason to be anything other than friendly so far.

The reaction Nirian gets is nothing of the large and bombastic responses some other may have given her. As a seeress, Matakite was well used to getting unexpected information like this. It's best to take it in your stride. "Dinna seem like a duel." Matakite shrugs. "Fair play but, you'd win if we did. Still need to learn to control mine proper like." Matakite passes a few fingers against her bandana, over her missing eye. "Bit hard not being able to take me pounamu off and on when I want." She points out, her impressions of Nirian since they met was one of a woman in control of what she sees and when she sees them. She can almost will a sight into view. Far more control that Matakite was able to develop. "Or you're just lying to take credit for it now." Matakite suggests with a cheeky smirk. "You know, just saying you did all that to get me here. Get all the credit for doing nothing, aye? Goddess knows I've done that more than once."

The oracle wasn't wrong, Matakite shrugs lightly. "Met some of the other recruits here, aye. Seem nice enough. Some have right sticks up their arses, mind. Take more than a swig of rum to loosen that lot up." Very few would have grown up in the carefree pirate fleet environment like Matakite, but even so some were like prim and proper knights already. "Helivan of the Waves? Why?" She asks. "You can read fate and all that, Nirian. You can figure him out better than I can tell you. Not like he shared his deep bloody secrets with a kidnaped seeress." But the oracle wasn't going to change her mind, not on this and not on anything in general, so Matakite settled in to regale with what she knew.

"Helivan was an up-and-comer when I got stolen away, aye? Only got known as 'of the Waves' a few years after having me onboard." Matakite explains rather flatly. She didn't harbour happy thoughts much anymore, but she wasn't about to get too emotional over it. Not like she had the power to change the past. "So aye, I helped him and his crew get as powerful as they did. But that was only because of Helivan. I dinna think he had powers, but he had luck or foresight or something. He knew where I was and that I was important. More important than any loot the village had. Knew about me pounamu. Not like we advertised about me and mine, did we?" There is another shrug from the seeress. "And taking out me eye for the pounamu dinna kill me, only made me vision stronger. I guess he was blessed by Takaroa, aye? Blessed by the sea, plus add in me, and you get Helivan of the Waves. Not a man taken easily to rage, but when he lets the pot boil over he'll burn down villages and kill every man, woman and bairn. Hoping I don't see him for a while yet, aye?"

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?
Matakite

"You wouldn't be wrong in hoping so, but I'm just going to frank, you'll see him a lot sooner that'd you'd like. I keep telling people these things, and they keep ignoring my warnings or underpreparing anyway. And somehow, most of the time it's my fault, anyway. Certain futility to it all, isn't there?" Nirian says before laughing bitterly.

"But you're no stranger to that scenario, either." she states, matter-of-factly as usual. "Which one of these incidents annoyed you the most?"

Signý Amalasuintha

Nirian looks at you for a second, very confused, before visibly resigning herself.

"Okay, I understood about... none of that." she admits. "Is... is that something you deal with every day...? How does your power work? Just like, open the floodgates to some sort of other plane and hope whatever comes out work for you?"

Nirian looks at your hand, and then back up at you, and starts blushing. Pretty deeply. Soon her entire face is read. "Yes!" she blurts out, strangely excited about this situation.

A moment later, she realizes that you weren't asking to marry her.

Her face even redder, to the point one might worry about it simply popping, she explains the misunderstanding. "... Marcus, that is something you do when you marry someone. An union between two humans meant to last the rest of their lives. It's a very, very important, emotional thing. Asking a favor doesn't require such grand gestures."

Taking deep breaths while attempting to calm down, which she hilariously failed at, she decides to continue anyway. "Okay! Are there any other things you misunderstood in the past?" she asks.

...

You barely get your answer out before she runs out the room, her hands covering her face in utter embarassment. You have a certain feeling that it might take a while for her to come back...

"Oh, the Freelands don't make sense, it's... like... just... chaos and dreams.", replies Signý. "It makes more sense when you're there, like a dream does, but it doesn't after you leave. Sorry! I don't go wandering very often, it's... very dangerous. I've learned a lot more than most people know about other worlds, but there's more than any person can learn. It used to be that Ketill would take me on trips, but without him it isn't safe. I'm not sure it's safe with him. I can do short trips in an emergency, but the farther I go, the harder it is to come back.."

Shaking her head, she says, "It was that way when I was very young, but I can at least focus on a plane I know about and try and draw forth something specific. It doesn't always work... but... usually I can do it as long as it it's fairly common there. So fire from the Pyrerealm, or a could from the Aerrealm, or light from the Seven Heavens is easy, but... trying to summon a specific shade from the Grey Murk is... I can't. Like, I'm lucky to get a figment. So a stone from the Deeprealm is easy, but a gem is a lot harder and requires me to pull harder."

She lowers her voice, leaning towards the Oracle in confidentiality. "The floodgates are dangerous. I can't open them unless I know it's safe. Um... is it ever? But you know I'm not supposed to." A slight pause. "I can open two now, but I'm really not supposed to do that. That's less like a flood and more like a tornado. That's dangerous to me, too. Maybe I shouldn't have said? But, you're an Oracle, right? I mean, you'd know, so... just. I don't want people to be afraid. Don't tell anyone, please." She leans back, looking to the others. "So. That's that!", she says, putting up a confident face.

Ghorza Rockbiter

"Hello Ghorza! Nice to finally meet you in person. I mean, I know just about everything there is to know and most things you don't want anyone else to know, but it's much nicer meeting someone in person." She greets you with her seemingly signature grin. "Met Daisy earlier. She's very beautiful! I mean, looks that way to me. I don't know what passes for beauty for wyverns. She also tried to bite my hand off, but oh well. Still a much nicer person to talk to than most nobles."

Chuckling for a second, she continues talking. "Anyway, I'm actually in a hurry. Granted, I am most of the time, due to how many people want to talk to me, but whatever. I'd love to learn more about orc culture, personally. Sadly, it's unlikely I'll have the time in the near future. But, I'm rambling on - there is something I want to hear from you! What drove you to do all this even at the price of ruining relations with your own mother? Surely, humans can't be THAT interesting."

Inching closer, she whispers into your ears. "They're really not."

"Aka'magash! A blessing on you and yours, Lady Nirian!" Ghorza returns Nirian's grin with one of her own, "It is nice to meet you, too! And did she now? Ha! I wouldn't worry about it. That just means Daisy likes you! Or she was hungry, and she thought you were food," she looks at Nirian with a slight look of concern on her face, "...They did remember to feed her exactly twenty sheep, right?"

"Not interesting?" She says in disbelief, "Not interesting!? Lady Nirian, surely you must be joking! You're people have produced some of the greatest warriors in history! Warriors such as Sir Zander Ravenhall, who protected an entire fishing village from a band of pirates with nothing but a boat oar! Or the great champion, Aina Warhawk, who slew a dracolich with her bare hands! How can you hear of these tales, and not think they are "interesting!?" Ghorza hadn't noticed it until now, but halfway through her speech, she stood up, and started gesturing wildly as she was telling the tales of these warriors. The orc, who is now slightly embarrassed by her behavior, slowly sinks back into her chair. "...Sorry about that. I, uh, don't know what came over me."

"Anyways, you were asking me why I'm doing all this, yes? Well, the truth is," Ghorza leans in closer to Nirian, and whispers quietly to her, so nobody else would hear what she has to say, "My people... are suffering. We are constantly running low on supplies, and we are practically struggling just to get by. We orcs are strong, but I'm afraid even we have our limits. My people need help, but," Ghorza sighs, "They're all too stubborn to ask for it, and some would rather die than ask the Val'dash for aid."

"I am doing this because I do not want my clan to suffer any longer. I want my clan to prosper, and grow, and I really do believe the only way to for our people to become allies, and not enemies. I realize it won't be easy, but I have faith that it will all work out in the end."

"...Or at least, I hope it will."

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?
Ghorza Rockbiter

A while later, Nirian returns after running out of the room like that. Seemingly returned to her usual self, she starts talking about the earlier point of discussion.

"Yes, indeed, I do not find that interesting. There's more to life than bloody battle, you know? You will never be able to garner interest with mere tales of warriors, Ghorza. I'm a pacifist. In case you never heard of that word, it means that I do not not engage in acts of violence, even in self defense." she explains.

She points at the Sentinel's enchanted gear offhandedly. "Compare this weapon and the armor to one of your clan's. Are they not of superior make?" Nirian points out. "Why do you think the weapon is better?"

She waits for your reply before continuing. "It's not because we are the superior race of warriors - indeed, I would say it is the direct opposite. Humans are physically inferior to orcs, but they have not focused themselves on combat and warfare nearly as much as your clans. This fixation has lasted you for a long time, but the human adaptability has surpassed it. Innovation comes in the strangest of ways." she rambles on. "Hmm, how would I explain this the best? Let's see. If you were to take a spear, and improve the spear until it is the strongest and sturdiest spear, would it even matter if a weapon appeared that can beat any spear?"

As if to illustrate her point, she points at a crossbow mounted on the wall. "I think that is what your clan lacks. Your choice to come here was the correct one, Ghorza, but I fear you may simply not be representative of your clan. Indeed, you will end up a paragon, but will you be remembered as such by your people? That is the sad truth about paragons and geniuses both - they will often be recognized as such only in hindsight. Do you think becoming a famous warrior will end up helping you in your goals? Or do you fear that people will misunderstood the very purpose of your presence?" she asks.

To the oracle's question, Matakite thinks for a few moments. "That one that stands out is the dating advice, actually." She settles on. "Helivan is cocksure as anything, and never is he to listen to a wee babe say that this dark mysterious lady in port is bad news. Not going to listen to seeress on that one, aye?" There is a smirk. "Vision was dead on. Lady was a thief, had to steal a precious sword from the dreaded Helivan of the Waves to get full guild membership. Never even saw her leave. Just heard Helivan screaming his head off and found him tied to his bed with rope." There is a snigger from Matakite, clearly she still found the image funny to this day. Do you think becoming a famous warrior will end up helping you in your goals? Or do you fear that people will misunderstood the very purpose of your presence?" she asks.

"I-" Ghorza is taken aback by Nirian's comment, and isn't sure how to respond to it. She tries to form a response, but the only thing that comes out of her mouth are nothing but jumbled words. She's used to getting into arguments, but she's not used to having her beliefs questioned like this. What would her father do in this situation?

The little orc thinks back, when she would watch her father negotiate with the Val'dash. They would try to anger him, insult him, try to catch him off guard, but he was like stone- unflinching and unmoving. If they ever got to him, he would never show it. That is what Ghorza needs to be right now- like stone.

Ghorza takes a deep breath to calm herself, then she crosses her arms over her chest, sits straight up, and looks at Nirian dead in the eyes, "Yes," she says, her voice much calmer than it was before, "I know what a pacifist is. We call them On'davo; warriors who have chosen to fight with words than fists. Have you heard of the Stonebreaker clan? Their leader, Urag Stonebreaker, is an On'davo, and he and his clan have chosen the path of non-violence, and, though their clan is small, they are the most respected clan among the orcs. His clan has acted as a neutral participant during discussions, and they are responsible for making sure the clans do not go to war against each other."

Turning her attention to Sentinel's equipment now, Ghorza takes a moment to study it, "The weapon and armor are impressive, yes. The sword especially. The blade is light, but it has a lot of power in it, and it is sharp enough to cut through steel. There is no doubt that it is superior to anything we orcs have ever made, but," she turns back to Nirian, and shakes her head, "The power of a weapon does not matter if the wielder does not know how to use it properly."

As Nirian continues, Ghorza attempts to keep her composure, but it's obvious that Nirian's words have gotten to her. "I know," her voice is less calm now, and there is a mix of anger and frustration on her face, "I know I am not representative of most of my clan. I know being a famous warrior isn't enough to bring our people together. I know... I know..." Ghorza stares down at the table, her eyes filled with sadness, "I know... that my people might hate me for my decisions." There is a long pause, before she says, "...There are those who called me a traitor. A Val'dash lover. When they found out about my plans, they... they were angry. If it wasn't for my father intervening, then they would have thrown me out into the wastelands to get eaten by the sand worms," Ghorza's body starts shaking, as her eyes start to well up, "They won't know, they will probably never know, how much I have sacrificed for their sake. They might even brand me as a Thrakk- a betrayer, and my family might suffer for my actions, I know... I know... I will never be thanked for what I've done, but..." she sniffs, and wipes away her tears with her arm, "Someone has to do it," she says, in a determined tone, "It might hurt, knowing that there are those who despise me now, and there's a chance that I might fail, and accomplish nothing, but I still have to try! I deeply care for my people, and if there is even a chance, no matter how slight, that my actions here will help them, then I will bear any pain for their sake."

Ghorza pounds a fist to her chest, and loudly declares, "I swear, by the spirits of my ancestors, that I will see my task all the way through to the end! No matter how hard, or how painful it gets, I will not give up! I will keep fighting for the future of my clan, and for the future of all orcs! I will bring peace between our people, no matter what it takes!"

His happiness withers, however, when Nirian explains what he had actually just proposed. Marry? That was a new word, and new words meant new concepts. Normally when Marcus discovered a new word, he and Avagran would sit down and discuss other, related words, and how the new one subtlety differed from ever other word. Looking at Nirian's red face, and feeling more than a little bit of heat within his own head, made it obvious even to Marcus that this was not the time for a long discussion on the exact meaning of 'Marry'.

He rose back to his feet, and began to answer Nirian's new question, "Honestly, I would say that most of my experiences since I... reawoke... have involved a misunderstanding. The words come easily, but the understanding of what they mean does not. Certain things just seem, at first, as the opposite of how they actually are." He steps back slightly and starts gesturing with his hands, trying to set the scene, "A good example would be the time I attempt to sell a fruit vendor some berries I had discovered. I assumed that because the merchant exchanged fruit for coin, he would also freely exchange goods in the opposite direction. He was offended when I told him I would sell him berries at the same rate that he was selling berries to others, but I could not understand why."

He nods at the memory, "Avagran explained to me that the purpose of selling goods at the market is to gain coin, so buying goods at the same rate they're being sold at is pointless. Once I was told that, I could see why my actions were senseless, but -- that was not something that came intuitively to me."

"There were other incidents, as well -- Avagran had taken me to the park, and was explaining the concept of 'Pets' to me. Humans have partnered with other species, and offer them food and housing in exchange for services. That makes sense. So, a woman walked by us holding a small animal, and I pointed at her and asked Avagran 'What is wrong with that pet; it looks hairless and weak'."

An electric shiver went up Marcus' spine as he recalled the event, "It was not a pet. It was a baby. The lady was... most displeased, with my comment."

"The fact that humans start so small, and grow so much, is still a wonder to me. I don't even when where baby humans come from." The first time Marcus had asked, Avagran suddenly coughed and told him that'd be a conversation for later. Oh, was Niriam's face getting redder?

Marcus tilted his head to the side, so many things were so mysterious to him. Like, the whole 'Marrying' thing he'd just done on accident. Why have an entire pose dedicated to one specific act? If it was so important, why was he just hearing about it now? Was a ring truly required?

Wait... marry, past-tense, married? His instincts for language were good, and he was sure he'd heard that word before...

flashback posted:

Marcus sits, silent, watching at the end of a table.

Claire, Avagran's mother, "Oh, what a polite... boy, you've been raising! Does he really remember nothing at all from before?"

Avagran, "Yes, a true 'tabula rasa' situation. And, well, if you think I've taught him good manners then, well, it's only because I learned from the best!"

Claire, "Oh, dear! You do know how to flatter." she paused, "You know, you grew into such a good man, with a noble station in the Knights, I'm surprised you're not simply flooded with marriage proposals." She took a sip of her tea, "You know, by the time your father was your age, we'd been married for six years."

Marcus tilted his head, that wasn't a word he knew, but now didn't seem like the right time to ask.

Avagran winced, "Oh yes, well. My studies, you know, they keep me busy!"

Claire took another sip of her tea, "Yes, your studies..."

Marry, married, marriage. The words sounded right together in his head, and if he combined the old conversation with Nirian's explanation -- getting married must be hard. Incredibly hard, if a person as wise as Avagran struggled. When Marcus had accidentally Assumed The Marrying Position, she had accepted. Why? He looked down at himself. There wasn't much he could offer in a Union. Hm, he was made of metal... Maybe she appreciated his toughness, and wanted a partner who was unlikely to perish before her? Marcus shook his head, the minds of others were unknown to him.

He took a second to gaze into Nirian's face. She would be an excellent partner. She knew more things than most people, especially about the future. She hadn't gotten angry at Marcus when he made an error (although her breathing was still quite irregular, why was that?), and her face had a kind of... pleasing symmetry? As they stood facing each other in silence, Marcus felt the pulsing-thing within his chest increase it's tempo.

It was at this point that the Oracle excused herself from the room. Marcus felt the urge to follow her, so he did, right up to the doorframe of the exit. Standing a few feet away from her retreating form, he spoke quietly so that the people behind them wouldn't hear, he said, "I don't know what marrying someone means, but if I did, I believe I would still want to marry you." He nodded to himself. That was (probably) a very polite compliment, and above all he wanted to be polite.

As he stepped back into the room, he made a mental list of things to ask Avagran next time they met.

Do you need a ring to marry someone? Why?
Where are rings acquired?
We are around each other a lot, would you marry me?

Yes, that would be an interesting conversation.

Sorry to everyone who didn't make it! I already tried to cram as many as I can in there, more than I originally intended. But your apps were all so good!

To those that did make it, get your backgrounds done, as well as getting started on the "When our team first came together..." bits, in the order of: bull (arashi) > Nova (Alien Rope Burn) > Outsider (Hugzilla) > Legacy (TheFireMagi) > Transformed (Antivehicular) > Beacon (Tricky). The Beta playbooks haven't been added in this order yet, so feel free to just cut in whenever you think you got enough info for yours!

after a great meal i like to lie on the ground and feel like garbage

My Relationships:

quote:

Ghorza Rockbiter is awesome, and you take every chance you get to hang out with them.

"I have heard since I was but a child that the orcs are something to be feared. Hated, even. Demons of the battlefield, little more than animals that walk on two legs. It was with some reservation that I approached Ghorza, but I have found her to be most agreeable! She is not at all what I had expected she might be like and it is fascinating to learn of the orcs through the lens of their own culture."

quote:

You’ve got to prove yourself to Sentinel before you feel like a real knight.

"The bards may still sing of my victory over 'Lightblade,' but that is no great achievement when compared to the storied deeds of the 'Sentinel of the Southern Realm.' My spear may not be as sharp or potent as his ensorcelled blade, but I shall train with all my heart such that I can stand proud alongside him!"

Other Relationships:

Lady Fury posted:

Vane knew you before you changed.

"Ah, yes. Lady Lindenhall. We've crossed paths at events in the past, back when I still attended such regularly. I could scarce believe my eyes when we met in the Order. You hear the stories, yes? They paint her a terrifying beast that might strip the very flesh from your body. It is not so. Her form may have changed, but that is through no fault of her own. I must admit I have no great understanding of curses or other foul magics, but the reception of her new appearance amongst the nobility has been reprehensible."

Red Errant posted:

Vane is your rival. They tried to control you at a crucial moment.

"Her strength and skill are incredible, yet she — or whatever possesses her in battle — seems to lack control at times. I fear that she may yet become consumed by lust for battle. The same bloodlust that has tempted many down a dark path. I hope that she remembers what drove her to pick up that blade to begin with."

Influence:

quote:

You are so excited to be here. Give Influence over you to three of your teammates.

Ghorza Rockbiter — "Despite all of the stories that my father told me when I was young, I cannot see her as a mere monster. She possesses great strength of arms, naturally, and a most pleasing personality to match. Have you seen her wyvern? Daisy, she calls it? What a magnificent creature!"

Sentinel — "The Sentinel of the Southern Realms is a title that garners much respect. I understand that Lord Halder is not the Sentinel that stories are told about, but his heart beats true. I am glad to count him as a companion in arms and look forward to our exploits on the field of battle!"

Red Errant — "It is truly regrettable what befell her village. If I were but days faster, she may not have needed to take up such a life. I cannot explain why my father did what he did, nor do I understand it, but I will do my utmost to atone for her pain and suffering."

Relationships

quote:

Ghorza shows you around and tells you how things work.

I approached Ghorza after the first meeting with Nirian. I had heard she talk excitedly about several human Knights of reknown, and wished for her to tell me more of them.

She gave me their stories, and more.

Ghorza is wise, and has a... system of beliefs? She does not just know things, she knows about things that need to change. When she speaks, it becomes very clear to me that there is no reason that humans and orcs -- I have never met another orc other than Ghorza -- can not live in harmony. I believe her message wholeheartedly. I haven't heard an argument against it, and even then... it just seems instinctively correct.

quote:

The behavior of Matakite confuses you again and again.

She is so far beyond the Court of Arklan. So different from the other pages. I can barely even understand her accent!

I wish to know as much as I can, yet... my head can barely contain the city of Arklan, let alone the entire sea. I've never seen the sea. I shy away from Matakite because she knows so, so much I have no context for.

The Lady Lindenhall is an exceptional socialite. She always has the perfect reply to every situation, and... it would be a lie to say I didn't notice her odd appearance. Yet she persists, and I want to learn that persistence from her. I have told her as much.

Marking Lady Fury as Marcus' First Role Model

Marcus is interested in being polite, and Lady Fury is an expert for courtly decorum. Did his request for tutoring on Proper Manners make you laugh, and remind you of better times?

Not to Get Too Judgey But-

Ghorza Rockbiter: I've never really met an... orc. Demons, ghosts, but... I mean. Orcs. Like my dad used to read scary stories about. But I know what it's like for people to think you're frightening. So maybe that wasn't right.

Lady Fury: Oh. Um. I feel kind of bad worrying about what people think of me. I mean, she’s probably less dangerous, but gets the worse end. I mean, I think the wings are kind of pretty, but, um, I’ve always had to deal with E.P.s. Oh, that stands for ExtraPlanars.

Lord Vane Drake: Kind of... stiff, right? Just between me and you. I guess that's being a proper noble's child… my parents just bought me fancy clothes and some etiquette and dancing lessons. Don't think their heart was in it. Also, I wasn't allowed to go to dances anyway. Kind of like the balance I need to keep, but just trying not to do social harm instead of… real damage.

Marcus: A talking golem?! Will wonders never cease? I mean, they literally won’t in my experience, the worlds are full of strangeness, but it must be even stranger for him. I wonder if they brought him in for the same sorts of reasons I was, to have an eye on him? I mean, don’t tell him that...

Matakite: I don’t, what? Um. I don’t know if I can handle much more seering. But being on a boat sounds fun! Especially not one crewed by spiders- I mean, um. That was weird? I just meant it’d be fun to sail around. Forget about the spiders, okay?

Red Errant: I know what it's like keeping a lid on a can of what the hells, but I don't think she understands how dangerous it can be yet. I get how exciting it can be when you have control, but at the same time I'm a little worried she hasn't had her big freakout to learn from yet. I hope she doesn't have to.

Sentinel: He seems really nice. And pretty. And not full of airs like a lot of proper nobles. Um. Not that it's a big deal or anything, it's just, you know...

You hang out all the time with Red Errant, to blow off steam.

It looks like most of the others are sewn up (I'm too late), but I'm open to either of Matakite's relationships, if you'd like? Maybe more the second; Lady Fury is probably not a great heroic role model at present, unless you're into really angry combat and subsequent sulking.
