The Kwanzaa Bot is here to protect me.

I'd never seen Pod People before, so when I watched it the other day, at first I thought maybe I picked the wrong episode and thought it was Pod People, or that Netflix had mislabeled the episode or something, seeing as the movie has no pods, let alone pod people. But then I remembered that's not at all unusual for the caliber of movies on MST3K.

That movie's got a decidedly weird history: it was supposed to be an "alien monster kills a bunch of people" film, but E.T came out before it saw distribution and the top brass ordered the producers to add in the Trumpy B-story to try and cash in on that. It's why the whole thing feels so incredibly offputting and schizophrenic.

Also, most movies that were given the Film Ventures International treatment got a new title along with the new credits. Sometimes the new title had as little to do with the movie as the new credits did.

I think The Thing That Couldn't Die, and The Undead, are the two funniest ones I've watched so far, and I only started with season 8 because it was "newer" This is really really good. How do you guys compare joel to mike, like what's the appeal to each era?

It's a different dynamic between the host and the bots. Joel's kind of a father figure to the bots, Mike's more of a bro. The tone is a bit less sarcastic and more whimsical with Joel than it is with Mike, though that's very generally speaking and it's not super clear cut. I have a slight preference for the Joel era, though there are great episodes in every season.

The main problem with Season 8-9 is a lack of variety, as the Sci-Fi Channel required that they only riff sci-fi films. This also prevented them from doing a lot of shorts, which were one of the most fun parts of the earlier seasons.

The biggest jump in quality was between Season 1 and 2, so I'd recommend going back to Season 2 and working your way forward. Or skip around, going with whatever films sound most interesting to you. The biker films and "troubled youth" films are some of my favorites, and I'd recommend Wild Rebels or I Accuse My Parents as a good episode to jump into the Joel era with.

Or if you want to stick with sci-fi/horror, try The Unearthly. It's a fun movie, and one of the few episodes where you get two shorts.

Early Joel Era actually spends a lot of time explaining how he eats and breathes and other science facts, especially season one. Since he built the bots himself he plays a very fatherly role with them, making them do their chores, giving them baths, reading them stories, and occasionally tinkering with them. He was definitely the more hopeful host, always trying to look on the bright side of his situation. He was also responsible for the Gizmonics Institute and thus the Invention Exchange. He made a show for adults using a children's show format.

Mike is still in charge of the bots, but he doesn't have the ultimate authority over them that Joel did and it shows. He's closer to their equal and they challenge him more. He has a little bit more of a cynical edge and spends more of his time trying to escape than Joel did. While the team kept most of the show's format at first, it moved away from the "kids show for adults" over time, dropping the invention exchange and letters sections and moving to more stories in the wraparound segments.

I think the letters could come back. They kept doing them all the way up to the SciFi years. I suppose thematically it wouldn't have worked since they were in the future and all that. I don't know when the next season is supposed to take place but I'm assuming it's at least at a time when there's people on earth.

Well, when they're talking about it being in the future, it's not too distant. Literally each episode takes place "next Sunday, AD."

That bit got all kind of messed around with the Sci-Fi era, but it doesn't pay to spend too much time dwelling on that.

One huge difference is that Mike's era tends to get a lot meaner towards the movies, a lot more vitrol and hate, more often.

With the Joel era, things were a lot more relaxed and easy going.

Crow in the Sci Fi era is written as angry or annoyed all the time, compared to the more lackadaisy Crow of Joel's era.

The thing is though, this is deceptive. Mike and the Bots would be annoyed at movies all the time but there was rarely a moment a real anger or frustration.

When Joel and the bots got angry at a movie, they got ANGRY. And it results in some of the best moments of his era. Holding back on it until it deserves to come out is beautiful. The ending of Gamera is one of those wonderful great moments where Joel just gets fed up with everything and everyone and even takes it out on the Bots, something Mike never could do.

The relationship between Mike, Joel, and the bots is also very different. The bots respected Joel, but with Mike tons of riffs at his expense and they're all hilarious.

I like Joel, but the savage riffs of the Mike era are way funnier to me. And let's face it, most of those movies deserve the hate.

I always looked at it like Joel was the Bots' father and he plays to that type with his "Oh you guys" moments. Mike is more their older brother and a lot of his jokes come from riffing and playing off them.

PrinceRandom posted:

Same. I prefer Mike but Joel finally grew on me over the last few years. I think the point about seeing Joel as a host for an adults version of a children's show is spot on.

To be fair, I think Mike got better movies to riff on (though the worst host segments in trade off)

I loved the first Sci-Fi ep when, after five minutes or so of ape talk, Bobo tells Mike about this week's movie.

everyone feels that way and gives up.
that's how they get away with it.
The Joel years were just as sarcastic and the riffs they made called more attention to the actual production of a film instead of whining about how bad it sucked (though they did do their share of whining). Despite this, I do like the Mike seasons. The best episodes with Mike still had Trace as Crow, imo.

Later Sci-fi episodes had that distasteful edgelordish quality that I need to be in the mood to handle.

Really looking forward to the premier.

For the new season, I'm most curious to see of unique the new writing team feels. Even though members came and left during the original run of the show, it was a gradual thing and never really felt too different over a chronological viewing as a result. I wonder if the fresh team will try to mimic the feel of the riffing where the show left off, or if it's going to be a jump.

It wasn't just mocking the "Agent for HARM" theme; they were actually riffing on the James Bond theme, which is understandable given that this supposed spy movie from the 1960s (during the height of Bond movie popularity) was full of boring mundane things.
