Humans existed at the time but they were all paleolithic cavemen. The beastmen came about when the warp gates exploded and let the demons in. Warp energies mixed up humans and animals and turned them into manimals.

As mentioned it sucks up excess magical energy that would otherwise corrupt everything and let demons pop up all over. IIRC holding the demons off long enough for the wizards to cast the spell to create the vortex was why Aenarion took up the sword of Khaine. He had a pretty lovely choice, take the evil uber sword and use it to defeat chaos at the cost of cursing his descendants forever etc, or lose the battle, let the wizards get killed without casting the spell, and let the whole world turn into the chaos wastes.

For obvious reasons most wizards who know it exists would really, really love it if they could cut off a slice of that delicious delicious raw magic power currently being wasted on being shoved into oblivion, even the ones who know the vortex's purpose and fragility. I don't know if it's a mod I've got or if the trait system is just dumb... but how does murdering chaos and executing captives of Chaos get my Arch-Lector the "Likes Chaos" trait? That sounds like... the opposite

That sounds like... the opposite I suspect something got screwed up in the recent patch because I've had 'likes dwarfs' show up for greenskins who execute dwarfs constantly, and 'like vampires' for... you get the idea. But I've only really noticed this - at least to this extent - recently.

Like some officer fresh from the academy or whatever would hate the undead but as he fights them and learns about them he's like "Hey, who isn't tempted by the idea of immortality, am I right?"

Pathos is a bitch. Alternatively, the trait system is just bunk. Get that mod that fixes it and makes traits appear due to logical interactions in combat and on the strategy map instead of random chance. Also get that mod that adds AI assistance back in. Holy poo poo that's the only way Beastmen, Greenskins, and any massive two to three+ army fights on each side are playable. The ability to just select an entire army and tell them to do their own thing is invaluable. On another note, what's the Old Friend DLC going to be? Krell? Or another hero? I was just going to add in that ive been looking for the mod that does just that with the traits and i cannot seem to find it anymore I would guess Old Friend is the FLC part of a DLC that contains a ton of Legendary Heroes. So stuff like Gotrek Gurnisson etc and i think like many others that Krell is the free part of it.

Gotrek Gurnisson would be badass. Though i'd hope we get the whole lot of the characters featured in that series if so. IE: Felix Jaeger, Max Schreiber, Ulrika Straghov (Her family's fort is even a settlement in the game!), Kat, that crazy engineer that made a zeppelin, etc, etc. Gotrek was just the centerpiece. A ____slayer novel themed DLC as the last DLC would be pretty loving awesome. Taking the most popular Warhammer Fantasy book series and making the characters be playable would be a great capstone to the primary old world content. Edit: Looks like the mod was deleted. It hadn't been updated in awhile, though the mod maker said he'd update it once all the DLC was out. The original name was "Better Trait Triggers". I'm not so sure about that, Manfredd, Ghorst, Kemmler, Vlad and Issabella are 5, the Empire has 3, Franz, Gelt and Volkmar, and if you include the Red Duke for Vamps, you should include Boris Todbringer (even if he is way lamer than the red duke) for Empire. Although, hmmm, if you have no DLC, than yes, VC have 4 (across 2 factions) to the Empires 2, so that is double. Was this your line of thinking, or did I miss something? Holding a tiny rear end hammer is real dumb when fighting mounted tbh. If he had a big lance or spear he could stab people and contribute and not rely totally on poor Deathclaw.
