Genius article on Kotaku, spreading the word about its greatness. Not surprisingly it uses Open/Pass as an example of how the show owns. Here's a link.

It's upsetting that The Genius is mentioned in the same sentence as America's Next Top Model; even if it is done with a sense of irony.

I've been rewatching season 2 of Crime Scene in preparation for 3, and I can reconfirm that this is some of the best television ever produced.

I'm just terrified what they are going to do with the cast, because everyone is perfect in 2.

edit: also Jinho dying at the end of part one of the cruise ship two parter is still one of the best moments of television ever. Its the right mix of shocking and stupid.

It's both thrilling and terrifying.
Has anyone checked out the Chinese version of Crime Scene? The entire first season is subbed in English on YouTube. The cast isn't quite as charming as the Korean version, but the format is exactly the same and all the cases are different from the Korean version.

Fine watch if you enjoy the show's format.

I was just about to ask about this actually, because I ran into it while googling. I am for sure going to give it a try.
Even if the cast isn't as charming, they are still smart right? I heard the Chinese one is actually a bit more complicated in some cases.

I would say there's a healthy mix of ranges of deduction competence within the main cast, which makes for a nice balance between substance and humor. Some of the members are very insightful, and others are there more to be funny. There's also some interesting tactics that some of the cast members employ. For example, one week the detective deliberately made the first public vote for the character that seemed least likely to be guilty at the time, simply to gauge the reaction of the other characters and see who seemed the most relieved.

There's also an ep where everyone was dressed as a member of The Avengers, and someone killed Hawkeye.

Yep, but I was watching from a playlist created by the YouTube channel that posted the videos, but it looks like they're the same videos. Also I was wrong on the Avengers ep, it was Winter Soldier that died.

They've also subbed half the episodes for Season 2 so far, which is still currently airing.

Oh man, thanks for that rec. Halfway through the first episode (which is great), the subber obviously isn't Bumdi but I kind of love it. With my limited Chinese, I can understand their limited English (the subs aren't as smooth, it's true), but it makes sense given the differences in the languages, and sometimes when there are brackets, he's literalizing a common phrase after kind of missing it in English. There's a whole dictionary worth of proverbs that are essentially vocabulary in Chinese, and I think it's really cool to see them spelled out in context.

Also it's loving Crime Scene, so it just rules.

[edit to add] Regarding the subs, because I cannot unthink this:

When I took Chinese in uni, we had a few oral presentations each term. They required a powerpoint presentation of English dialogue, and a transcript performed from memory in Chinese.

What we did was to take each Chinese character/word we could, and just transliterate it into English one by one, sequentially. If you'd looked at our powerpoints, you'd have thought we were either immigrants or six year olds, but looking at the words in order prompted the correct Chinese characters in order.

Once you do stuff like that, subs like these ... well, for me it feels like college, I guess.

Sangmin on Crime Scene:

- Doesn't gather any clues
- Spends all his time dancing
- Randomly accuses someone.
- Turns out he's somehow right.

Social game on point.

Ok Chinese Crime Scene is amazing so if there are any other language versions of these shows I would the links to all of them. I'm halfway through the first season and they will straight up do crazy aquatic fantasy murders.

The subtitler aint no Bumdi thats for sure. Makes a good bit harder to follow. Worth it for the melodramatic payoff at the end of the Avengers episode though.

The normal murders feel way less intricate so far, but the super conceptual ones like the mermaid and black tulip episode really work well because those worlds have their own "rules" that get applied on top of the format so it brings back some of the intricacy that is missing.

The show feels way easier than korean crime scene, but its just great to get that mystery mix.

On one hand, I would too. On the other, I'd also have said that at the end of Season One, and Season Two was much better. Leave me Jinho and Jiyoon and I'll take my chances with the rest.

Jang Jin was my favorite, but I think he's probably too busy with his directorly duties to do a second season. He got into his roles, had some great quips, and made some pretty memorable deductions.

Edit: Kim Jihoon was my favorite of the guests; dude was good and I hope he becomes a regular. Jiyoon and Jinho goes without saying.
