My kidneys are busted
I slept on a japanese futon that rolled up and you could store in a closet when not in use. It cost like 100 bux and was pleasant enough that I'll probably buy one again. Until I know I'm staying in the same place for more than 1 year, I'll probably not buy a big mattress and whatever else again. Just sleep on the motherfucking floor like your ancestors.

That must be why Japanese porn is so weird; their thin floor mattresses make it impossible to have normal sex comfortably.

3 days in so far, but I have definitely noticed that I'm sleeping cooler than before and waking up very refreshed no matter how many hours I clock in. My wife, who instigated the purchase (as I was much more skeptical of it being effective), is still finding it difficult to initially get a comfortable position. She is a side-sleeper and I prefer lying on my back so that could be the major difference.
My only complaints are that the mattress' edges are not any more firm to indicate where the end of the bed is; and it is about half the height of a standard spring mattress, so sitting on the edge to put on shoes is a little awkward but I'll adjust eventually.

When my husband and I got married a couple years ago, we were hoping to get a king sized bed, so I put some king sized sheets on my wedding registry and I got all of them.

Now that we're purchased our first home, it looks like our bedroom can't comfortably fit a king size bed, so now I have all these sheets I won't be able to use.

I'm thinking we have enough room to go up to a queen and maybe I could try to sell the old sheets (never opened) and rebuy them in the right size.

I'd like to get an IKEA bed with drawers underneath and not have to worry about the box spring falling through the frame.

Pilsner posted:

Alright alright, here's what I call a box spring (or box mattress in my language):

The whole massive bottom part, including the wooden frame (hidden by fabric) and the two layers of springs is the box spring. The thinner part on top appears to be a latex topper ("top mattress").

You only need the box spring (with feet) and a topper for a good bed.

That looks like a Hstens bed, the most absurdly expensive beds in the world. A bed from them costs between $10,000 and $30,000, just crazy. Or maybe it's a Chinese copy since there are Chinese characters on your image. Anyway, the luxurious Hstens beds are split in two - a base (with a wooden frame, springs, wool, etc.), and a spring mattress (also with springs, horsehair, wool, etc.), that I guess compliment eachother and together, make up a gigantic load of springs, horse hair, foam, wool, and so on. Normal people here just buy the setup I pictured above.

In North America, our box springs are not very comfy. There are often hard wooden slats on the top, so another mattress is necessary. A box spring is a large, heavy wooden box with some springs in it.

I had an Ikea, and they're fine with two problems. They often come with a real "chemical" smell that lasts about 2 weeks, and mine only lasted 3 years before it got body grooves in the foam that made it really suck.

I then got a casper. So happy with it, it's crazy. I miss it when I go away.

Time for some thrilling heroics.
I am a mattress salesperson. Yes it's horrible. Yes I sell 7 thousand dollar mattresses to people.

After working with mattresses and selling and returns and warranties for 5 years now my completely non expert opinion:

Those memory foam or latex bed-in-a-box like Casper or an Ikea bed are probably the best bang for your buck.

Coil mattresses suck and the best way to buy a coil mattress is get a 'tight top' with no thick padding on top then buy yourself a memory foam topper to taste. Any coil mattress with a 'pillow top' will sag after just a year and will suck and hurt you.

Memory foam beds are usually memory foam on top of a dense foam core. The memory foam will usually not sag but the foam core will soften and will probably get uncomfortable over time.

Natural latex beds are my top pick. They don't seem to be hot like memory foam and I find we have almost zero issues with sagging etc. (Full latex mattresses, anyway) and with the more expensive brands they are customized to every person.

Warranties on most mattresses are garbage and it's very rare we have a customer who qualifies for one.

Anyway. Mattress stores are a big rip off. They will usually quadruple the price they got the bed for then put it on for 60% off. Maybe go into one to try and see what style you prefer then just order a cheap one online.

I've had a Tempur-pedic mattress for years. It is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. As it is essentially really expensive memory foam, it is hot as balls if you sleep warmly at all. Doesn't bother me unless it's the summer and I'm not running the A/C. Doesn't seem to make sex any more difficult, just quieter.

But he was like "lol sorry dude no payment requied but that poo poo is yours now I don't want it back." I ended up throwing it away because nobody wanted it. I am still totally in love with my extremely hard, cheap, foam mattress and then very expensive squishy topper. But I sleep on my side to go to sleep and then on my stomach to sleep, which I have learned is pretty weird for a girl?

I was actually curious about pillows? I have never bought a pillow that was more than 10bux or something that just got handed down for generations, (with a new pillowcase).

Is a better pillow worth anything at all if you sleep on your side for a bit and then inevitably end up face down, with your neck cranked 90 degrees anyways? I don't like those huge unsquishable pillows because obviously that would hurt my neck, but it's almost as bad to have really tiny thin flat ones. Is there a more comfortable medium squish pillow?

One that doesn't ever get hot would be great though, because I always get hot when I sleep.

I have never understood how anyone sleeps on their back at all... I might as well be trying to sleep standing up; it's not restful to me, to the point that it boggles my mind how anyone enjoys it. (like I GET IT, everyone is different, but it's so incredibly un-sleepy to me, its still hard to GET-GET)

Fellow stomach sleeper here, I got what you mean about sleeping on your back. I get sleep/waking paralysis when I end up on my back which is scary and dumb and no good.

I did some research on pillows for stomach sleepers since you definitely don't want your neck cranked at a ridiculous angle. I ended up getting a Pancake Pillow from Amazon. It's pricey, but it's been worth it so far. You can adjust the amount of cushion which is the whole appeal. I just use one of the inserts but two would probably work, especially if you fall asleep on your side.

So what can possibly be better about a pillow when you're sleeping on your face? I read an article once that said that us face sleepers will look at least 5 years older than our back-sleeping counterparts, It seems like a legit possibility, because I spend 7.5 (or however much you sleep) hours more per day, smooshing my face into a pillow than anyone who sleeps on their back.

I think this is bull, because I still look really young, but I don't know anyone else who sleeps nearly face-down all the time, so I can't come to a really researched conclusion. Apparently it's also super-bad for your boobs, by sheer volume of time spent smooshing them, but I don't know if you have boobs or not.

The Purple mattress came yesterday!

The thing inflated immediately, which was cool (I thought they took many, many hours to get ready) and was heavier than I expected (110lbs, according to the website). At the end of the day, it's still just a mattress so setup was... well, setup is a generous way of describing my level of participation. I made sure it was in the right place, had no plastic covering on it, and let the mattress mattress.

It came with two sleep masks and two samples of the weird purply goop they use to make the top layer. My wife claimed the purple stuff almost immediately. So nothing in the way of bells and whistles, but I didn't expect any. I did like getting a sleep mask though!

Really neat design on the mattress & a weird new mattress smell coming off of it for a while- sort of like science and nail polish remover- that went away before bedtime.

The top layer is super strange; when you first lie down it's like thousands of jelly fingers are squirming around you, all finding the ideal spots to rest. One of the cats wouldn't walk on it for a while and the other one would, but he would make constant stops to do this little two step dance and/or place a paw on my body; I'm guessing for a cat the jelly finger sensation is like seeing R'lyeh. The middle foam layer is much more firm and holds weight nicely. I'm 6'5", 240 and barely sank in; even after a night's sleep there wasn't a man shaped indentation on the mattress when I got up, which I expected to see. The support is phenomenal; it made me feel weightless and like there was no stress on my joints or muscles. It also sleeps crazy cool, which I hear memory foam does not.

It generates almost zero noise when you move and vibrations from my wife moving were not transferred to my side of the bed. That may or may not matter to you. Partner noise and movement have never bothered me, so I basically see it as a novelty, but my wife loves it.

Sleep quality was nuts. I put on the sleep mask, loaded up the Rain Rain app on my sleep phones and immediately conked out, only waking up around six because one of the cats was punching me in the head, trying to get me to feed it. Every part of my body was loose and relaxed, save for my neck, because the pillows are the only holdover from the old spring mattress (we've already ordered replacements). I was in an extremely deep sleep all night, which is unusual; usually I'm constantly half waking up to adjust my position all night through, but with this thing I was sawing boards uninterrupted from 10pm-6am. It was the best night's sleep I've ever had that wasn't preceded by a day of hard labor and I woke up so well rested, you don't even know. My wife had much the same experience, except for some mild lower back pain, which I've read isn't uncommon at first.

VERDICT: This was the best use of a tax return we have ever made. Purple has my confidence; we already ordered the pillows and the sheets & will probably get the motorized bed platform asap (the no snore and zero g settings have my interest).

WARNING: Take this all with a grain of salt, because I've always had super cheap mattresses and we've put up with our current one since we started living together ten years ago, so my standards are nonexistant.

The fact that a corpse at a wake is laid on their back should be an indication that you're crazy with your stomach sleeping and adversion to back-sleeping. :) I can't think of a more naturally restful state than lying down on my back.

Anyway, if you've never paid more than 10 bucks for a pillow, you've probably only experienced foam pillows, which are just terrible. I can feel the heat retention immediately if I put my face down into a cheap foam pillow at a bad hotel. If you're lucky with your 10 bucks, you might have had one filled with rough duck feathers, which clump up inside the pillow casing, and you can almost feel the contours of the feathers poking into your head.

You need a pillow that primarily consists of down. It insulates better, transfers body heat and moisture better, is more fine-grained, and is more "stable" so to speak, meaning it doesn't compress back and forth like a sponge. A decent mid-level pillow in my country (Denmark) is typically around 70% duck down, 30% duck feather.

There are two other things to consider: Height and firmness (or "fill weight"). The height is usually either low (thin pillow) or high (thick pillow), and I've noticed lately that some high pillows have sewings on the edges that sort of make the pillow look like a box:

(from IKEA)

I find this pretty nice compared to the typical "round" shape where the sewings just meet.

Second there is the firmness, or "fill weight" (not sure what it's called in the USA), this is pretty much how many grams of down there is in the pillow relative to the pillow's size. More down/feather will make the pillow more firm, less will make it soft. I prefer firm.

Some high-end pillows also have a few "compartments" inside that separate the down/feathers, so they don't all clump up in one big chamber. This will make it a bit more comfortable and stable as you toss and turn, and prevent the down from clumping together.

I live in another country, but I usually spend around $50-60 on a medium quality pillow with mainly duck down (like 70% down / 30% feathers). The last one I bought was from IKEA (the one pictured), and it's pretty good to me. I'm no super clean freak, but even when changing pillow casings fairly often, my pillows get disgustingly yellow over the years, and with time, the down/feather inside will also absorb the oil/grease/sweat/hairwax from your body, ultimately ruining the downs' ability to do its job.

Edit: I forgot to mention the synthetic materials that the "pancake pillow" and the like use. I've tried one, it's not too bad, but I don't really see the point or benefit, it's not like buying a down pillow will bust your wallet. I think that pancake pillow uses synthetic material to keep the material cost down.

I sleep on my stomach or side. I say yes, a pillow makes a huge difference.

Again, I'm partial to latex - it feels similar to memory foam but doesn't retain the heat. I imagine the purple pillow also fits the bill based on the review a couple posts up. I've gone through a half dozen pillows and this is my current favorite : https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Talalay-Latex-Zoned-Pillow/dp/B0049DZ090/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1492601297&sr=8-12&keywords=latex+pillow - (It's a Malouf Z if you are against clicking links) I think I found it slightly cheaper on another site, but it's still not exactly cheap. I've had mine for about 3 years now and it's still in good shape.
