I once rescued a bumblebee that had flown into a window and gotten stunned. I picked her up on a paper plate and brought her outside and she eventually got up and groomed herself before flying off.

I do this all the time! The weather where I live is very changeable so you regularly find bumblebees that have gotten a bit chilly and tired when the sun clouds over. A little bit of sugar water on a spoon and they are full of beans in a few minutes; it really is very satisfying :3:

Now I'm wondering how venomous snakes get such vibrant colors, since most of the other vipers and cobras I'm aware of are kind of plain looking (aside from hooded snakes having false faces).

I'm guessing their prey doesn't have full colour vision but animals which might otherwise threaten them do.

This is half-remembered, half-out-my-rear end, but from what I recall it's because their prey can't see the same colour spectrum so to them the snake is nigh-invisible in undergrowth/tree branches/forest floor. It's also true for undersea creatures as well.

Its similar to hunters wearing blaze orange. Deer can't see orange (it just appears as a shade of brown) but other hunters can.

Photoshop even has a filter which lets you preview common types of colour-blindness in people and animals.

I made this for the Red Panda thread to show just how extreme an effect it can be:

Played with them all the time as a kid.

Pros : Common as can be, non venomous, and when you're 10 - does anything beat catching a drat snake?

Cons : You'll know they're not poisonous, but that won't stop them from biting you and when you're 10 it will still freak you out.

Cons part 2 : Oh my dear god the smell. Catch a garter snake and play with it for a bit and your hands will smell so so bad. Thinking about it now - I wonder if they have some scent based defense mechanism. Didn't stop me then, but just thinking about that smell is making grown up me uncomfortable.

edit - wiki knows. "Most common garter snakes also secrete a foul-smelling fluid from postanal glands when handled or harmed."
