The Mixed Up Brothers of Bogota A hospital mix-up with two sets of identical twins ends up with them being raised as two sets of fraternal twins instead, one to a middle class family, one to working class farmers. Eventually they reunite. What I love about this article is how ambiguous it is - there's no sense of closure, no grand resolution, just 4 young men trying to figure out what happens next.

Rape Culture in the Alaskan Frontier is an article that really struck home because I spent a few weeks up in the village that they feature, Tanana, and know many of the people in the article. Hell they have a picture of the table I ate breakfast and dinner at every day. There's also Out Here, No One can Hear You Scream about the rampant rape and sexual abuse foistered on women in the national parks service. Life and Death in Assisted Living a ProPublica look at how nursing homes and "assisted living" facilities are gorssly underregulated and basically a place where you send people to die slowly (or not so slowly in some cases). Something I deal with on a daily basis after seeing people who have literally not been fed and watered for days dumped off in the ER for "altered mental status" or what have you. The neglect you see in these places is profound, people with pressure sores eroding down to the bone and one patient who  had a urinary catheter left in so long that it literally eroded through his penis. And yet, these places keep on trucking, even the notoriously bad ones. As my case manager puts it, there's gotta be a place for the crack whores and drug dealers to go when they get old.

Basically a mother tries to be inseminated with a donor egg and her son's sperm after he dies from head trauma. I was reading it on the subway earlier today and actually said "what the gently caress" out loud on a crowded train.
