We should load them in a crate and ship them to ISIS. I suspect opening said crate would result in an effect similar to the Ark of the Covenant.

The seventh episode is the worst one. It's the epitome of Allen Gregory getting everything he wants and not facing the consequences of being a horrible little poo poo, and it even ends with a rape joke.

See, terrible people getting away with poo poo I'm OK with. I've laughed my rear end off with Seinfield plots and Sunny plots that have the main characters being massive douchenozzles and getting everything they want. I think where this piece of poo poo show differs, and fails is that the creators don't realize how awful the main characters are, possibly because the creators are awful people themselves. They think they're clever, where as again on a show like Sunny, it's very very clear that the people creating the show developed their characters with eyes wide open and aren't under any delusion that they're the good guys.

Another terribly written show, Fear the Walking Dead, I think has a similar thing going on where the writers think they are both super clever and great, while they aren't; they turned every single character into the worst type of sociopath madman almost immediately out of the gate, people willing to literally feed their neighbors to zombies or burn down the house of someone taking them in (along with the host) because they're inconvenient, yet the writers think they're still kind of the good guys because FAMILY.

It makes me wonder how anyone could write that and not see what the gently caress is wrong without actually being screwed up themselves. Back to this show, the creators are trying to make a likable central character one would assume, even as an anti-hero, but this is how they write likable and that's kind of the mind blowing part. Therefor they're loving terrible.

Refresh my memory, if you don't mind. Didn't Sheila tell Allen in the last scene that he was a rotten little brat with no redeeming qualities, and that she couldn't stand to be in his presence any longer?

I may be projecting a bit, but I vaguely remember her telling him off before leaving.

Well, she says he's "An awful little boy who says horrible things", but that's about it. She also calls Lex Luther "A very gay man". I have a feeling the verbal beat down you're imagining in your head is a lot better than the weaksauce one that actually happened, hold onto that memory.

Sheila is an interesting idea for a character (a decent human being who calls Allen Gregory on his poo poo), but she's poorly executed and her actions make no sense: Why is she moving in with strangers she just met? Why does she suddenly want to to intensely mother a child she only had because she was paid to be a surrogate? Why would she want to have sex with Lex Luther? Why is she suddenly moving out and giving up on this child so quickly?

As weird as it feels to say this, I don't think Allen Gregory was enough of a jerk this episode; or at least not enough of a jerk to Shelia. She just has one small fight with him and that was enough to convince her "Welp, this situation is hopeless. Guess I better cut all ties". It would have worked better to have been a slow build up of him being more and more of an rear end in a top hat to her until she just can't take it anymore and explodes and starts screaming at him about how awful he is.

In the case of Always Sunny, it helps that a lot of the time, some or all of the gang eats poo poo at the end of an episode. Also, they're all in hells of their own making (i.e. Frank living in squalor even though he could easily afford a better place to live, Dennis's oversized ego that blinds him to what others think of him). In every episode of Allen Gregory, everything bends to his will, and the show expects us to cheer for him. That's asking way too much from the audience.

It's not that the concept alone makes for a bad show, but there other factors that have to be in play. That's why Always Sunny has been on for 12 seasons and Allen Gregory was canceled after seven episodes.

I've decided to push back doing the last episode until tomorrow. I'm playing Persona 5 and having a great time and I'd rather just keep doing that instead ruining my mood with Allen Gregory.

Although, in a weird way, I've had a strangely good time writing this crap and I'm kinda sad to see it end. I'm almost tempted to keep this thread going and start rewatching and revewing "Chozen", another bad show with an unlikable protagonist that for some weird reason I have a lot of opinions on. If Allen Gregory is a dumpster fire, Chozen is a garbage can fire- not quite as bad, but definitely not good. I like to say I'll watch anything that involves Hannibal Buress, but between Chozen and his short-lived Comedy Central show, maybe I should step back from that promise.

I watched one episode, the one where they go to a strip club and Hannibal's character ends up getting a lap dance from a girl nicknamed "Onion Pussy."

The other day I saw someone on facebook make a quote from Allen Gregory and I thought "wow there are people out there that actually liked this show?"

Wasn't Allen Gregory some kind of prodigy child who was a massively successful playwright in early promotional material? That seemed to be lost and he just became some terrible poo poo child that talked over and down to everyone and for some reason everyone kowtowed to him constantly. I remember reading that the way he talked was modeled on how Hollywood agents talked, why was that thought to be a good inflection for a character to have as viewers would be unfamiliar with it.

I completely forgot that Jeff (because he looks like Jeff Winger from Community, which works with the other guy looking like Dean Pelton) was basically an abused spouse.

Reading the summaries I am reminded of that episode of Bojack Horseman where he is coming up with ideas for a new show with a writer and they both convince each other that the show should be really edgy. Proceed to them taking a lot of drugs and then egging each other on to come up with edgier and edgier ideas and the show ends up being completely unwatchable. I imagine that is how the creative process went for Allen Gregory.

Well, yeah. Sitcoms with awful protagonists usually are because they get those details right. Jonah Hill thought it was funny to have Allen Gregory work like this, and he was sorely mistaken.

I heard a description of Last Man Standing and I'm astounded that a show with such a regressive view of society just wrapped up its sixth season, albeit on a Friday night slot where networks just dump a bunch of crap. The Goldbergs is just "Let's Capitalize On '80s Nostalgia: The TV Show," which is bad, but not quite as awful.

The Goldbergs is just an unfunny sitcom with schlocky "aww everything's okay now" solutions to non-problems that the family creates for itself. It would have fit in well in the 90's but it doesn't stand up to what we have on the air now. Black-ish and Fresh off the Boat are clever and pretty good. Goldbergs is not, but Hollywood politics will keep it on the air until half of the main actors either die or quit.

There seemed to be a lot of terrible animated shows in the 2000s that tried to be like Sealab and do anti-humor style jokes, that just never worked. You'd get insane stuff being said by one character and the rest of the cast just standing around awkwardly. I remember 12oz Mouse having a lot of that. I used to think Tom Goes to Mayor was like that buy after watching Awesome Show Good Job I understood what they were going for, but I still don't like the show. See, that's it, its two guys just saying random poo poo back and forth that has no timing or punchlines. Xavier looked like garbage but once I actually watched it it was really absurdist in the best kind of way. I preferred Lucy Daughter of the Devil though.

There was also Perfect Hair Forever which felt like someone who once saw a cover of an anime DVD and decided to do a parody of it, but then it only was like 4 episodes or something? I also had no idea Squidbillys was still going after 13 seasons.

I’ve seen every episode of both of those shows, and I really don’t think I’d be able to write entertaining episode summaries for either of them. They’re bad, but in ways I find too stupid/bland to care enough about to get properly angry at.

Like, here are my complete thoughts on Brickleberry: It’s Family Guy, but in the woods. It relies heavily on shock and gross-out humor and doesn’t do either one particularly well. It got three seasons though, so I guess someone must have liked it.

And here are my complete thoughts on The Goode Family: It’s King of The Hill, but with liberals and worse writing. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but I actually remember thinking it had some potential. It was a “This isn’t good now, but maybe they’ll find their footing in season 2” situation. It got canceled after one season though, so I guess we’ll never know (I could have been way wrong about this too, it’s possible my slightly positive feelings for the show were just left over good will from King of The Hill.

This is just how I feel though, if someone more passionate thinks they can come up with an entertaining rant about either of these shows I’d love to read it.

bunnyofdoom posted:

That show is one of the blandest things to ever be animated.

It’s a bit amazing, it’s so dull and generic you actually forget about it as you’re watching it.

Very few people will believe me when I say this, but Squidbillies is actually a good show. It’s a very specific brand of pitch black dark humor and I completely understand why it doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it does what it’s trying to do very well.

I loved the art style of Moonbeam City, and like you said the music was great. The aesthetic was a lot stronger than the writing (most episodes ranged from “Meh” to “Kind of okay I guess”), but like The Goode Family I thought it showed potential and was a little sad when I heard it got canceled.

I can see that. Chozen is a failure, but at times it’s an interesting failure and I’d be willing to bet that he had a hand in the creating some of the more interesting parts.

See, the main reason I want to voluntarily write about Chozen isn’t because it makes me angry, but more because it makes me wonder “Why did you do this?” Like, it’ll make some really good choices (okay maybe good is too strong of a word here, “unique”-ish choices?) and then cancel them out with a hundred other bad choices so I mostly just end up feeling confused and only occasionally disgusted. Unlike with Allen Gregory where I’m just constantly feeling incredibly irritated by that horribly, unfunny voice-

Oh poo poo, I still have one last episode of Allen Gregory left don’t I? And I was supposed to post a summary of it like, two days ago wasn’t I? Yeah, sorry about that, been busy at work. I’ll get on that as soon as I can, but now (like, right now) I gotta go do job stuff.
