It helps that you ell peed it and refused to see it all the way through to the bitter end by playing one of the bonus bosses as Terra because Terra is mechanically the worst character.

Call me simple, but Kingdom Hearts 1/2 do this cool thing where you get your cool powers/spells/abilities just by normally progressing through the story line. There is basically no grinding anywhere in the games until you hit post game stuff like Ultima Weapon/Sephiroth. Limit Breaks and Summons and Magic are unlocked through boss fights and story beats, so the answer to "How do I get stronger?" is almost always just "Keep Going".

So when I get to games like Dream Drop Distance & Birth by Sleep, which gate all your coolest stuff behind crafting and grinding rare enemy drops and snuggling animals (???), which can lead you situations where you're going up against tough bosses and suddenly you realize that you need to fly across the loving galaxy to some random level from 7 hours ago so that you can get the elements you need to make Dark Meteor or whatever.

BBS also suffers from giving you a relatively small amount of time to get to know the new characters after having been invested in Sora/Donald/Goofy for years, and the fact they are all pants-on-head and made of wood just made the entire experience a painful slog for me.\\

It's not gonna stop me from platting all 8 games once I get a PS4 but yeah, everyone acting like BBS is the pinnacle of the series just blows my mind... No it isn't, Kingdom Hearts II is, and that's why were all excited to go back to the main storyline, characters and mechanics.

Basically most people are gonna think BBS is better because hardly anything forces you to delve into the insanely well done battle system of KH2 unless you're on Critical (which probably has an erroneous reputation as this super impossible mode) so they just mash X, while BBS's is like an insane power trip where melding actively forces you to use a lot of different commands to learn more skills.

KH2 is better, but BBS is way better at telling the player to at least try a little to vary up their player in an intuitive way.

I managed BBS on Proud so someone playing on normal or easy would have no problem with the couple bosses that are kinda BS, and the story of BBS is great, in that it's mostly about Aqua cleaning up everyone else's mess because she's the sole competent person on the side of light.

Bad game feel and lack of momentum just killed that game for me.

Kind of a side point to "get more things just by playing the game", in BBS you do get more cool D-Links by progressing the story from the different worlds. Though those also have a little bit of grinding to them too, yeah.

Supporting this, Command styles were explicitly designed to make "mash x" gameplay more varied and cool with no effort/thought needed, as far as they've said in an older interview.

This is also incentivised by the melee attacks in BBS having no weight and staggering enemies not really being in the game so you kind of have to dig into the command board because your actual keyblade is basically a pool noodle for how good it feels to use compared to KH 1/2

More Minor Details That Are Worth Devoting An Entire Game To Explaining:

1. The color of Xion's hair
2. The Lingering Will's cape
3. Why the Final Fantasy characters changed clothes between KH and KHII
4. Why Ansem's Xehanort's Heartless's voice changed between KH and KHII
5. Why darkness turns your eyes yellow

Am I missing any?

4 is easily explained by him being a literal time traveler. His voice aged as he got older by slip sliding through the timestream. Darkness turns your eyes yellow because yellow is the color of cowards and subtly informs the audience that the people who access the darkness are cowards who take in abnormal strength to cover their natural weaknesses and thus will always be defeated the righteous warrior's path. The Final Fantasy characters changed clothes because once their memories of Sora faded away at the end of Chain of Memories, they were left with a big gaping hole in their hearts that they sought to fill with a change of wardrobe. The Lingering Will sprouts a cape because he is the manifestation of Terra's will, and Terra at that moment saw himself as an ally of justice, a "superhero" as the gaijin may refer to them, opposing Xehanort's villainy and superheroes wear capes. Xion's hair color is a result of her being Sora's clone, and is a representation of his suppressed desires, as Sora is Japanese for sky, and Xion's name is Japanese for the tide, which through the water cycle evaporates into the sky to eventually form rain clouds, which are the color of Xion's hair, to eventually fall back down to the earth, the Riku. This is a metaphor for Sora's feelings towards his friends.

Terra is the only character in the series I felt sorry for because he's just so drat stupid. He's the second stupidest person alive, because Eraqus already fought Xehanort and for some reason decided he was alright to have around.

Also, I think BBS in general was really overhyped when I played it. People called Aqua the best thing ever, but I still just don't see it. I mean, in terms of damage output, I guess? But the gameplay involves standing in place and using high level spells, which is the opposite of fun. I found Ventus the most fun to use in that game, really.

On the opposite end the portable games hand you your fun movement abilities instead of gating them behind mechanics a bunch of which you're very unlikely to unlock naturally. I pray that 3 won't bring back form grinding.

I love KH2 but it's hard to try and compare it to the portable games linearly because they're just so different too. And when it comes to stuff like the story I vastly prefer those games to 2.

Yeah this was the least spammy boss I ever fought. As you said, KH2 and BBS were really spammy. DDD mixed thing a bit but that bonus boss was the first real time I had to formulate a proper strategy instead of brute forcing it.

DDD is probably the most spammable KH for bosses. Ballonra is ridiculous and kills everything fast and has no downsides at all, and there is 0 reason to use physical combos which are infinitely riskier. Bosses don't even get stunned most of the time except for Balloon-spells.

Even ReCom and Days have limitations on what you can spam (can't use Firaga on a couple of bosses, only so many Limits you can do in Days). I like DDD a lot, but it collectively has the most unfun bosses in the series when you break them down.

I picked up KH1.5+2.5 while it was on sale and I've been having a blast playing through it this week!

I last played KH1 when I was about 13, and I remember it being much harder! I'm only on standard mode, but the only things that I've really found hard are Sephiroth and the Unknown optional boss.

Chain of Memories was a different story though. I almost decided to skip it in the first hour because I picked wonderland as the first world. Which I now realise was a BIG mistake. I reloaded a save and picked agrabah and it's been a breeze since then.

For the few of us who like these, BB went through a new KH2 Randomizer a while ago which was pretty fun to watch. Just got uploaded to youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dbtmr3oUMc

If people didn't know/see, it's a KH2 hack that switches around the bosses/forced encounters across the whole game for tons of weird/funny results. It's ~12 hours total so maybe watch it in bursts. There are some mean ones with replacing Scar's fight with Sephiroth and replacing Sark with Hades in the MCP fight.

If Tinkerbell was replaced by a spell that simply said "Regen + Auto Life" I don't think many would miss its usefulness.

Peter Pan in KH2 actually does the exact same thing but he's properly balanced because he has a time limit and dismisses your party members like all the rest of the summons.

One of my favorite things about KH is that most of the games have so much stuff floating around in the mechanics usually the only advice you need is a brief reminder something exists.
