It's a long shot but I'm looking for a cheap older FPGA for a project. Naturally I could tear apart a load of TV motherboards and build my own board etc, but does any of you goons happen to have any of those Cairnsmore1 FPGA boards that were originally used for bitcoin mining? I would be interested in purchasing at least one or two.

How cheap? This is a list of low cost FPGA dev boards, if you haven't seen it. I'd imagine something like this would be much better than some random board designed for buttcoin mining.

The code for the project was from a former buttcoin miner using the board. I'm lazy and don't want to fuckass around learning how to port code built for a specific piece of hardware.

Exactly, and pretty much any dash kit is going to make the aftermarket stereo look decent.

The only time you're going to run into an issue installing an aftermarket deck is when the car has other features integrated into the factory stereo, like AC controls and whatnot, but I've only had one car that the stereo absolutely couldn't be replaced (Volvo S40). Most stereos can still be swapped out, even if it looks like it cannot be at first glance. The easiest way for someone to find out if they can swap their stereo is by going to crutchfield.com and entering in your make and model, and the website will tell you which decks will fit and what extras you will need for installation (dashboard kits, steering wheel control modules, etc.). The industry isn't as dead as some people here make it out to be.

My Volvo S80 has a pretty similar integrated dash to the S40.

I just said gently caress it and bought a tape deck adapter to plug my phone into. Yes, it sounds worse than an aux jack on an aftermarket stereo. I can only control the volume from the steering wheel. But that's okay. Everything's going to be okay. Namaste. :fireman:

That top one can be swapped out. The S40 I had was more similar to the bottom one, where the AC and other system controls were integrated into the stereo. Anyway, there are still ways to add aux ports and subwoofers and such to those stereos without changing out the factory stereo. They just take some research and some aftermarket parts that are hidden, like DAC units that can be hidden under the seat or in the trunk.

The bottom one is the one I have :qq: Some day I might eventually pull it apart to get an aux cable on there, but I have always been a bare-bones car kind of person. There are some pretty slick looking whole dash replacement parts out there, but they cost a significant portion of what I paid for the entire car. All the rubberized bits are starting to disintegrate and get sticky, but hey they still work.

To keep things on topic, someone posted a loving gorgeous stock radio/dash a while ago, I think from the 80s or early 90s. Anyone else have a particular model of car that they love just for the dashboard aesthetics? Personally I really like the big honking chrome knobs and wood paneling type, but early all-digital stuff is great too. I know personally what a piece of rear end it can be to try and modify "integrated" designs, but when they are done right why would you ever want to?

That style of seven‐segment display is something I’ve only noticed on more recent electronics.

Maybe it’s older than that and I’d just never noticed it, but I’d guess the first decade of the twenty‐first century.

I had a 2004 Saab 9-3 where swapping the stereo would have been a bitch. I never bothered. It was all integraded with the cars displays, its connections were fiber optic, and the best thing the aftermarket came up with was to tap into some lines to run RCA cables to an active subwoofer.

Don't worry, my dash swap went as far as the LCD at the top, down to the gearbox and into the middle to rear air-con vents.

Yep, that was the S40 dash, except above where the pic cuts off, there was an upper display for the navigation. I really liked the car, but hated the built in stereo even though it looked really cool at the time. After a year, I switched to a Ridgeline, which was much more practical for my needs and also has a double DIN opening and a very easy dash to remove.

Here's a guy talking to one of the people who restored a PDP-1 at the computer history museum, and then doing some stuff with it. It's pretty neat, and at the end they even open it up and you can marvel at how pretty it is inside. Especially cool is reading a program from paper tape, because it folds itself so neatly (more or less), rather than just vomiting the tape out one end.

What a cool computer.

I was on vacation recently and found a proper record store, like a really modern store going across two floors in a main retail area (as opposed to some dingy basement space in an alley, which is also something I've seen), and it got me thinking: I totally get the appeal of having large-scale cover art, a tangible representation of the music, analog sound and the ritual of putting on a record and all that, but looking at what they actually had on offer, can the point of it all really be to rebuy all our favourite 90s and earlier albums for 20 bucks a pop?

Also I recently spotted the first Ramones album on 180 gram vinyl with a big sticker about how it was remastered from the tapes and I was like, seriously guys? The Ramones are not that nuanced.

I feel like this vinyl resurgence is taking a subtly wrong turn.

This has been going on for a while and its cause people are oblivious. Pretty much any halfway popular old record has a 180g super quality remaster version selling for $20... And most of the time those versions sound worse than the $5 used 80s reissue you can get everywhere because they didnt get the original master tapes for their "remaster". One thing that bothers me even more is when albums that originally came out on one disc get split into two for "sound quality" reasons. Gotta love getting up every second song

Most labels that do 180g reissues have essays praising their dumbass process in their website, yeah. On paper it is true, maximizing the distance between groves and not using the innermost part of the disc does improve sound, but as long as your turntable is set up right and theyre not cramming more than 30 minutes on each side you wont hear the difference... Which usually is negated by the hosed up master anyways. What i hate even more about it is when the sleeve artwork gets modified for this to fit the two discs
