Even with the 2 titans they have right now, I wonder how the hell they sun 32 ships. Even with a surprise attack it's hard to believe they can destroy all, before 1 or 2 retreat into the ocean. Makes me wonder if they have some other new technology.

I'm sure they didn't send all 32 ships at once and then just decide not to send any more for the next 4 years. They were likely sent in several groups over the course of the 4 year time frame.

They have made distinctions on who can or should inherit titan powers, and the "recruiting process" makes total sense in the context of only certain family lines having full compatibility with specific titan types: presumably you have several individuals that are ie compatible with the Armored Titan power, so when the time comes you just pick the kid among them that has distinguished themselves the most to inherit it.

It's why Gabi keeps talking about getting the Armored Titan, while Zeke talks about handing over the Beast Titan to Colt.

That makes sense too, I guess I interpetted it more as finding loyal soldiers with "warrior" qualities than it was about finding families with the right titan genes.

I guess what's also left to be seen is whether being an "ideal host" is specific to a particular titan or just to being a shifter in general. In this chapter Falco talks about competing with Gabi to take the armored titan, implying he's also a candidate. It seems weird to me that two brothers would be candidates for two different titan powers, because if it's truly tied to genetics w.r.t specific titan powers, wouldn't Colt and Falco be in line for the same power? It also seemed like Galliard was a candidate for the armored titan along with Braun (while Marcel got jaws), but ended up getting passed on and received the jaws later, implying one person could be compatible with more than one.

Armin does look pretty thin and deformed there but maybe it's after a long battle when he's exhausted most of his energy.

Marley is probably in a position of being uniquely unequipped to face against titans since up until now they were the one nation who'd never be fighting against them. The countries fighting against them would have developed anti-titan weaponry, but they themselves are powerless against Eren and Armin unless they're willing to risk their remaining titans.

It's kind of created a rock paper scissors thing.

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

At this point I'm expecting Paradis to have done something like using Zeppelins made of titan material manned by glider 3DMG assault teams to capture all the ships. The dichotomy of titans vs normal technological development that's being established as defining the story of the wider world is set up to change. As Zeke mentioned, the unique history of Paradis has spurred a massive change in technological development, and that's with the widespread suppression of science and technology that was just unshackled immediately before the time skip.

Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
The half-dozen times Reiner really should have been offed have all been redeemed by the closing conversation with Falco. It seems like he's sifting through the recruits to find one who's independently minded enough to inherit the armored titan and use it to establish Eldian independence. All the subtext we got about the warriors going native wasn't just idle talk.

On another note, what's the likelihood that Hange/etc has spent at least a portion of the past 4 years drilling through Annie's crystal to extract her powers? Who would we expect to inherit those powers?

Well they have no more titan serums and no way to make more so the only thing they could do is convince Annie to join them. Which might be possible if Bert wasn't dead.

Or I guess they could turn Connie's Mom into a shifter.

I thought this chapter said that they made titan juice out of Zeke's spinal fluid, which is also why he was able to control those titans despite not having the coordinate. Isn't extracting spinal fluid extremely painful but very possible, especially considering shifters have a healing factor?

The Paradis government has a few captured titans for research, not to mention whatever Marley supplies and technology they've managed to salvage from their foiled operations, or from Grisha's basement. They've had a few years too of free reign to look for whatever records or technology the old government and church might've kept.

Not all the titans, just the ones in the zeppelin so he could force shift them and slightly control them. They had been making titans for years and letting them lose on paradise island.

My understanding is it can be pretty painful, but it's fairly common for diagnosis purposes for various central nervous system conditions.

There's some complications that can happen, but we've been doing them for real since the late 1800s, so I imagine the folks in AoT's setting probably don't have much problem doing it.

Her and all the other feral titans are Eldians from Marley that got transformed and dumped on Paradis because the Marleyans didn't like 'em.

Because "playing goddess isn't so bad, huh," or something like that. I can't remember in what chapter Ymir lies on wall Maria with Reiner and Bertolt and says it, but I swear I remember it happening sometime. Not that it makes any more sense given her letter to Historia either, since it still seems like a regression of her character.

I didn't get the impression of there being a well-formed plan by Reiner. He's suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder and the author isn't being subtle about it: waking from nightmares, flashbacks during the day and sudden outbursts of emotion.

I thought it was interesting how Reiner's flashback to his former teammates mirrors Eren's experience when he returned in shame to the city after the Female Titan.

Because for all her blustering, Ymir was a big liar and a hypocrite. Is it really not clear by now? She kept saying she didn't care for others, and she was certainly bitter about being used as a symbol of hope in her past life, but ultimately she was self-sacrificial to the core as she either loathed or simply had little regard for herself.

She went with Bert and Reiner for the same reason she joined the military to find Historia: because she felt sorry for them. Being from Marley herself, she understood and sympathized with their circumstances, didn't want to see them killed by titans, and afterwards figured that going along with them to return the power she stole would help them out (so they wouldn't get executed as total failures). Plus possibly explain the situation further to try and negotiate for Historia.

In Ymir's mind, her life was of little worth and soon would fade anyway, and Marley's victory was assured.

Basically, while Reiner has always been treated as the most visibly unstable character, but between him, Ymir, Historia, and Eren, Ymir was by far the most emotionally damaged one of the bunch.
