It started out kind of weird and I don't really know where it is going, but it's pretty cool so far.

The soundtrack was cool and good. The technical boy stuff was weird, and not just in the changes from the book.

Same, but I also read the book like 16 years ago so it was before I knew who Ian McShane was. I always pictured Wednesday as Brian Cox.

I pictured Wednesday pretty close to McShane when I read it, personally, maybe a bit fatter.

I had kinda figured out early on who he really was and I think that kinda influenced my view of him.

Speaking of, the show doesn't seem to be even trying to play coy with it. The marketing for this show has straight up spoiled the name and identity of each major character. I guess its hard to make that a secret anyways in the modern day, but it seems kinda weird to me. Diverting from the book?

Yea - felt like the first episode of Preacher with a bigger budget and a lot more self importance. Some parts were too verbose / felt try-hard. I still liked it and feel like it can be a fun show once it settles down a bit.

That's weird, I feel like *after* that point would be the perfect stopping point for a season, given the big reveal.

Yeah I'm genuinely curious if people who went into this show cold picked up on it. I'm also surprised we got that full opening vignette, curious to see what others are planned for the adaptation.

Also I read American Gods back way before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a thing. Loki is now a household name and a beloved character by many. I was a big nerd of Mythology, so I picked up on Low Key pretty fast, but I dunno how many other people did. But nowadays? Its hard to hide that...

Seems like the show just avoided saying his name, maybe I missed it. But the marketing straight up spoiled it.

Goddamn that was a great first episode. I don't think I could have imagined such a great adaptation for a book as out-there as American Gods, but leave it to Fuller. The casting is fantastic. I didn't even realize Sweeney was Pornstache in OITNB until I looked him up. My only complaint is that some of the effects seemed a little unfinished for a Starz production, but that was minor.

Really excited to see viewers new to the premise posting here. I remember my reaction the first time reading it like 10 years ago, and you guys are in for a trip. :)

Shadow Moon is a great casting too, pretty much exactly how I imagined him in my head reading the book. And Loki was actually great too.

And that whole intro bit with the vikings? Haha, awesome.

It is pretty obvious in hindsight, but neither me nor any of my friends that read the book caught it before the big reveal.

I found the ending to the episode a bit jarring too but I really enjoyed the episode. Ian McShane is amazing, I expected that, but I'm really pleased with Mad Sweeney. I loved the barroom brawl.

It's pretty obvious in the book from the get go. They don't really try too hard to hide anyone's identity. Especially after Shadow is in the know.

Same thing was the case for Preacher, can't imagine what that show would be like for people who have never read the comics.

My biggest compliment for the first episode is that the cast seems to have real chemistry with each other. Shadow and his prison buddy, Shadow and Wednesday, Shadow and Sweeny, Shadow and Audrey,
They all played off each other really well. It bodes well for the coming episodes.

Assorted thoughts: Some of the effects looked a little cheap. Audrey's scene was great. I don't know if it's just my soundbar's settings, but I felt like the dialogue was kinda hard to pick out at times. Technical Boy was a lot of fun to see.

Attended an advance screening of American Gods.

Note: I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and a huge fan of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal.

It's beautiful, it's fun and it's well acted. But... something about the premiere feels disjointed. I'm told that there's a lot of Shadow Moon inner monologue in the book, and it's not in the show. Maybe it needed that to keep a continuous narrative going from scene to scene. I dunno, but it's good enough that I want to see if it finds its footing. I was a little skeptical about Hannibal at first because their version of Will Graham came across a little gimmicky, and that show ended up being amazing
