Sorry if you guys couldn't figure it out. Like I said, I've never read the books, and I knew what he meant. I don't know if it's some big book spoiler, I'm just mentioning things I've noticed from watching the show.

In the opening scene:

VO: "The wind could be bargained with"

Eventually Wind comes.

On the plane:

McShane's character: "It's my day. Wind's Day."

I figured it out, but that's because I spent time reading mythology books in elementary school and read Gaiman's Sandman.

Other people will not know, because not everyone read Sandman nor mythology books nor do they look up the Wikipedia article for Wednesday.

It's a narrow mind that expects everyone else to know all the same things and have the same experiences as oneself.

I've never researched norse mythology, but at several points during my school years someone would bring up that the days of the week are named after old norse gods because it's a fun fact that pops up literally everywhere. I don't even know if that's what he really is, but book spoilers people made sure to pop in and talk about it anyway.

As it is now, it's only a theory, highly supported by the text of the show; on that note I think it's fair discussion. It could even be wrong, since we have no rightful clue what will or will not be adapted from the novel.

This is an interesting point and puts some new flavor on the Bilquis scene. A more blunt property with the premise of "ancient sex goddess in Hollywood" would paint her as an ultra kinky dominatrix or something, but in this she's not even so much as a prostitute. She's a woman in the dating world looking for genuine attraction and lust, surrounded by men who have endless stores of pornography and for-hire thrills at every corner ("the most beautiful thing I haven't had to pay to touch"). In a sense, those types of easy lust-fulfillments are her "rival pantheons" and in the face of red tube and online escort services, of course she's obscure and diminished.

Then don't bring it up. Don't discuss the book in the thread like the OP asked. If someone says "this is a spoiler by the way, you should spoiler tag this" every time someone talks about something from the show, it's going to get pretty annoying.

Should there maybe be a separate spoiler/book readers thread, like for GoT? Or would that be an awful idea? It's been a while since I've read the books, but I could maybe throw something together in the next couple days

Sorry, I was referring to all the posts quoting me and bitching at me for a thing I got from watching the show. But anyway, someone should probably make a separate book spoilers thread so us non book readers can enjoy and talk about this show.

Can we please move on past the spoiler slapfight?

I read the book a long time ago.
I didn't know it was a potential spoiler. See above, I read the book a long time ago, so I could be wrong.
It took me 1 minute to edit my post. It really didn't hurt me at all to do so.

To recap: Right now, all we know from the show is:

Some Norsemen landed in America, got stuck.
Bargained with the wind to get unstuck.
Centuries later, our hero meets a mysterious old guy that says "Wednesday (pronounced Winds-day)" is his day.

Perhaps the rest of the season will shed some more light on whether this is just a coincidence.

Thus my dissatisfaction with the heavy reliance on promotional material and book readership to generate interest.

It wasn't a wind god, it was a war god. That's why they fought each other so he would give them wind.

The intro scene says they made offerings to force the All-Father to notice them so far from their home and intercede on their behalf with the wind. So it wasn't just "a" war god. Whether they succeeded in drawing his attention or Kickstarting All-Father 2.0 is as yet to be determined.

I thought it was a really nice detail in Mr. Wednesday's intro, in which he scams that airplane lady into getting him on first class, that (major spoilers revealed late in the book) he usually travels with his son, who takes care of everything for him. And of course, who does he sit next to on the plane but his boy, Shadow Moon?

Some subtext I thought was really great was when Technical Boy's children beat and lynch a black man because it symbolizes how loving racist the faceless assholes on the Internet have become.

Also, their outfits seemed heavily inspired by A Clockwork Orange. The children of the digital age are anonymous racist sociopaths. Checks out.

You're in luck. The Atlantic's review of the first few episodes (spoilers for the first few episodes, obviously) mentions that line specifically.

Anyways, I was extremely skeptical of this show when it was announced, mostly since then the casting choices went against my book-headcanon casting, which was admittedly ridiculous, but I was mostly happy with the choices they've made so far, and I'm excited to watch more. The visuals of the Technical Kid's limo and the lynching allusions of the Children beating & hanging Shadow where really well done. I'm not sold on the strawberry jam gore though.

Yeah just seemed like the Natives were telling them to gently caress off, this is our land and we'll defend it.

I did think it was super awkward though that the Vikings were all "our god is a war god, so lets go to war against each other!"
Like... why not try going to war with the Natives?

I guess they (probably correctly) figured they were massively outnumbered and had no chance?

Reading it as a Native American / First Peoples god keeping them away is kinda fun though, I hadn't considered that. Its entirely plausible.

I know right? It could've just been for comedic effect, but the accuracy and volume just stuck out to me. I guess it's more plausible that in a show/story about mythology and gods, a little exaggeration is to be expected.

I've read that there are more "coming to America" scenes in the other episodes. I'm kind of curious to see if that same level of overblown bullshit is in all of them.
