Definitely seconding Tintin and Astérix, comics are great for language learning.

Asterix also has a lot of French wordplay that might help too

they put out a weird american retranslation of asterix for some reason and the names were just dreadful even compared to the older english ones

panoramix -> UK getafix -> US magigimmix
abraracourcix -> UK vitalstatistix -> US macroeconomix

I always thought the English Asterix names were bad because they're French so their names should at least sound French.

I imagine translating Asterix in general has to be awful

Its like when I saw a Spanish language performance of an Oscar Wilde play

I loathe those new names, but I'm perfectly fine with the UK ones. This might be because I grew up with that edition of select Asterix books, but I think the old names fit in well with the series' overall sense of humor.

the UK names are generally good. i always thought idéfix -> dogmatix was clever

I always liked Abraracourcix, which was the chief's name in the Dutch translation, same as in French. It sounded like a plausible gallic chief's name. Then they had to retranslate it and it became Heroix which sounds dumb.

But not as weird as the fact that Marcus Antonius is "Mark Anthony" in English which sounds like a good name for a keeper for Arsenal or something.

Wolf in White Van is good but Universal Harvester was everything anyone with a negative opinion of John Darnielle would have expected him to write.

Is it something in liking Saunders that makes Mel say "Haters vacate" or vice versa, or are the two unrelated. In any case, best not take the risk

I finished John Ciardi's translation of the Inferno and Purgatorio earlier this year, and It's really helped my understanding and appreciation of literature. If you are just starting out, as I am, I really can't recommend it enough. I read 'The Vegetarian' after finishing Purgatorio, and I don't think I would have enjoyed it half as much if I had not read Ciardi's translations first.

Please do get yourself a copy if you haven't already.
