Anyone watching this hearing with the airline CEOs? Local news stations are getting into the airline hate now. Just saw a teaser for a segment tonight exploring STANDING ONLY FLIGHTS and PAID RESTROOMS! What else will the evil airlines do to oppress us?!!?

Obviously they couldn't use it for everything they use a helicopter for, but they did use it for flying doctor service, sightseeing, etc, and then it makes total sense. Rugged, easy to fly and maintain airframe that can use short and undeveloped landing fields, and lets you carry around rich people who want to look down on everyone else and specialists to hard to reach locations. Makes a lot more sense than those bomber conversions, that's for sure!

Yea they got grilled pretty good especially by that one woman who was saying her constituants were calling her from an aiplane stuck on the tarmac in some anecdotal story involving a snowstorm. Why couldn't you bring them a ladder?! She yelled like the ceos were supposed to know what the gently caress she was talking about or even how to begin to respond. One guy was pretty chill he was all. So we're done dragging people off of airplanes? Yea? OK good. Mistakes were made let's move on. The whole thing was painful to watch as people kept saying how little they knew everyone wanted to be there and how thankful they are to the ceos about enduring 5 min of bitching from everyone. In other news Alitalia is about to tank and that makes me sad because that was hands down the best traveling expirience of my life. You obviously never flew with them in the early 90s within Europe. Wide open cockpit doors (so close to Libya), stench of cigarettes and cigars wafting down the entire length of the cabin, literally *watching* a pilot holding a cigarette while his FO drank coffee during a crosswind landing... We flew Meridiana whenever it was possible.

I flew Alitalia in the early 90s. My mom took me up to the 747 flight deck to visit. The pilot handed me a pair of plastic wings. Was cool; would fly Alitalia again as a child.

I do still don't know who I angered in the switchboard to get connected to that phone call. In the end he started to talk about the End Times (tm). Maybe it's not a specific certification procedure, but there's certainly yay/nay on various surface types and conditions. It's particularly dangerous on that Vampire, where a chunk might take out his horizontal stabilizer, which would end up loosening a whooole bunch of runway surface. Since he was flying so flat and holding it on, I suspect he knew.

Will the firefighting appliances from the airfield leave the airfield for any fire that is close to the airfield or only when there's a plane involved? I assume the airfield isn't closed due to this accident which happened nearby, so what happens if a plane crashes there now? I probably won't lay awake at night pondering these questions, just mildly curious.

Yeah, it's not uncommon if the fire needs special equipment to deal with it. Recall back to that fire that collapsed the interstate bridge in Atlanta a month or two ago, they sent trucks from the airport to help out. That said, in order for the airport to remain open they need to maintain a certain number (and size) of trucks ready to respond to comply with the rules.

The amazing thing isn’t that the plane could stay in the air with a propeller like that; it’s that it could stay in the air while carrying the pilot’s massive brass balls.
