ya, clipped wing spits are amazing because one of the few weaknesses of spitfires is rollrate which is something germans tend to specialize in

when it comes to spitfire vs spitfire though, unless one player gets the jump on the other its going to come down to summadat serious pilot poo poo to shake one off the other.

Flying a Spit against premium Spits always reminds me of getting into a mixed game as mid-tier Japan and suddenly having to fly against planes and teams that can actually match you.

British reverse speed is pretty bad, but on the other hand they all have excellent agility otherwise. You just have to get used to turning your tank around ahead of time—it's not like your front armor is any better than the sides and rear on most of these tanks.

Aim for a tank with a bigger gun. Or, surprisingly, Pz. III APCR. Sure it's just APCR but the KV line has flat as gently caress armor which is exactly what APCR shines at penetrating. You won't do much damage once you pen, but it's better than doing literally nothing.

As a new player, I'd say some words about Crew (which I'm finally getting the hang of with a little help from a friendly goon) such as:

* a Crew is required to use a vehicle, and you should have a minimum of 3 crewed vehicles in each class (Army and Aviation) but it's not necessary to go above that
* a Crew gains XP from battles, which can be distributed to various stats to make them better
* a single Crew can be trained to operate multiple vehicles, and the XP they gained applies across the board for the most part (i.e. they don't lose it when switching back and forth between different vehicles)
* to 'Send on Holiday' simply means to remove a Crew from the current vehicle they occupy and put them back into the available pool
* one of the easier way to assign Crew to a vehicle you own is from the vehicle research screen (note: this is different to the modifications research screen)

* one of the easier way to assign Crew to a vehicle you own is from the vehicle research screen (note: this is different to the modifications research screen)

Some clarifications and to expand on this:

You can have up to 5 crews per nation without spending golden eagles (premium currency). How you assign those crew depends on the mode you're playing, but in general you'll want two tank crew, one fighter crew, one bomber crew, and the fifth can be whatever (I think most players opt to use this crew for self-propelled anti-aircraft guns or heavy fighters). In arcade battles, you get several spawns of the type of vehicle assigned to that mode. In realistic air battles, you only get one vehicle to use in the match. In realistic tank battles, you start out with a tank and can earn points in the match to spend on respawns in other tanks or in aircraft; the spawn cost of a vehicle goes up if you've previously spawned in a vehicle of its class (fighter, bomber, heavy tank, light/medium tank, tank destroyer, SPAA). In sim tank battles, you can spawn in one tank and one plane, and you can start in the plane if you want to; the airplane can only be used once, but the tanks will usually have two spawns unless they're considered a heavy, and only get one.

Because of how expensive crew training gets for the higher levels of stats, it's best to plan ahead how you're going to use each crew. Your fighter crew can focus on fighter skills while your bomber crew can do gunner skills. Your main tank crew might prioritize repair speed while your secondary tank crew prioritizes spotting distance, or an SPAA crew that needs to get the gunner and radio operator trained faster than the other positions. Sending a crew on holiday doesn't remove the crew from the slot, only the vehicle from the crew; crew 1 will always be in slot 1. There is no need to specialize forever, though; a single crew can eventually reach full capability with every skill for every class of vehicle, but this will take a very long time.

As far as I know, you get triple crew XP in arcade mode compared to realistic and sim because Gaijin made a weird decision about average earnings in arcade a long time ago and has not yet reversed it. One of the fastest ways to gain experience points is to get a light bomber that can stay above the melee in arcade, and just bomb every base into dust. While tank skills only work in tanks and airplane skills only work in airplanes, unspent experience points can be used for either type—so the points you earn in air battles can be used to train up tank skills. Skills are leveled up by half points, from 0 to 5, but 5 is only halfway finished. You can use silver lions (regular freely earned currency) to give a specific crew "expert" training with a specific vehicle, which adds +3 to all skills while using that vehicle, bringing the total to 8 if you have the skills at a base of 5. You can get a further +2 from "ace" training, which can be bought with GE or by using a vehicle with that crewa lot. The crew will slowly earn points towards free ace training for that vehicle, equal to the spendable XP they earn, which builds to a 50% GE discount off ace training, then 75% off, then 100% for free ace status. Also note, to even get expert and ace training with a vehicle, the crew must be a certain level overall for that type of vehicle (plane, tank, boat); this level required goes up with tier, so a tier 1 tank can be experted and aced by a fairly low-level crew, but something at tier 3 might need a level 60 crew to be aced. Aircraft training caps at level 75, while tanks cap at 150—and it will take much, much longer to get a crew up to 150 for tanks than it will take to reach 75 with air skills, but a tank crew is fairly capable around level 70, so don't stress over it too much.

It's usually easiest to assign a vehicle to a crew from the research screen, but you can also speed up the process by using the filters next to the list shown when you press the two-arrow button at the bottom of the crew slot. You can filter by aviation or army, whether a crew is trained for a vehicle, whether the crew has expert (and/or ace) training, vehicle tier, and (most useful by far) if the vehicle is allowed in the mode you currently have selected. If you're trying to join an event battle with a limited list of available vehicles, you can use the filter to only show those.

Let's see, they can either: 1 - make you grind out or pay for fresh 0 level crews like they are going to do for the Italians, and like they have done for tanks, nabbing the lazy or greedy who will pay them in premium currency/real monies; or 2 - give you something for free or reduced incentive to play and probably not spend real monies.

They are going 1. That's how games like this get paid and how new players can get in at a even level (or sorta) with the wallets and/or autists that play games like these a lot.

To be fair though what they should do is make like World of Tanks and give you a fraction of convertible experience as truly free to make paying to convert more tempting. I have to imagine idiots would be more willing to pay to convert a couple hundred extra experience for something they can almost get with free stuff than to just convert thousands at a time.

Ninja: though if they ever did this I have no doubt they wouldn't make it retroactive because really they should continue to punish people for having played before a change for consistency.

You get a penalty researching anything more than a tier away from what you're piloting/driving. Tier one is fine through tier two, tier two is fine through tier three, ect. You don't lose much though since most of the most fun vehicles are tier 2.

This is true in Tanks as well. A lot of fun poo poo is in tiers 1-3 and once you reach tier 4 the grind can suck a lot of fun out of stuff.

There's no shame in playing tier 1 games just so you can rocket around the map in your BT-5/7 (or RBT) pretending you're playing Mario Kart. Heck, those can be surprisingly useful later on in RB if you use it to dash for the point right off the bat. Tier 3 has so many heavy tanks that you'll have the point captured and the enemy team suffering ticket bleed before the other team's fat Tigers are halfway to the combat zone.

Quoting what I posted on them several pages back,

quote:

Russian Matilda loving owns. It goes slow, it has -2 gun depression but it's a killdozer at its tier. Hold W, one-shot every idiot that gets in your way, and look cool doing it.

The A33 Excelsior is a pretty cool tank. The gun is the same inconsistent piece of poo poo that's on the Cromwell V and Churchill Mk VII, so sometimes you'll just kill one crew dude and sometimes you'll murder the target, and if you're shooting an angled KV-1 or T-34-85 or anything sloped you can just get hosed, and it only has 35 shots :psyduck:. But it goes 40 km/h and turns like a Cromwell and has 114 mm of front armor at BR 4.3, so it can get to good spots and make great use of them. Don't try reversing.

To go further on this, they are sweet as heck but you'll only enjoy the Excelsior if you already enjoy Cromwells and Churchills since it's basically a fusion of the two. The BR has been dropped to 4.0 since I posted that, so it sees fewer T-34-85s now and is thus even more enjoyable, but the gun is really really inconsistent. A super important detail, maybe even the most important detail, is that the tank is covered in clean flat space for placing decals and decorations.

The Matilda is still really great if you don't mind having no speed or gun depression. It's got 50% more armor than most of its peers at BR 3.3 and a lot more firepower with the BR-350B (MD-8 fuse) shell.

Yeah, I'm tempted to snag them since I've been sucked up by overtime, which means no time to play but plenty of overtime pay to pay.

Yes I realize I'm a whale.

Also, don't forget the Matilda chassis basically has built-in skirts on the side which can/will gently caress over incoming APHE and the occasional HEAT.

Edit:

Yup, whaled up and grabbed both. Trip report with the Excelsior(!): the loving things is like a Churchill or a Tiger that maneuvers like a Sherman. A heavy tank should not move this fast, alternatively something that can move so fast should not be able to face-tank shots so well. Chewed up some Pz. IV's without taking a scratch, sniped a Jap SPAA with an HE shell, then got my sides penetrated by the German 37mm halftrack. Sides are thin but that front can take anything at your BR, and the square shape and high speed is great for forming a diamond.

Excelsior pros:
-High penetration
-High ROF
-Heavy front armor
-Speed and maneuverability that should not be attainable by this much heavy metal
-None of the ammo is stored in the turret, take a max load (because you need to)

Cons:
-British solid AP ammo: roll 1d20 to determine damage to internal components.
-Relatively low ammo velocity.
-Max ammo capacity is 35, and 3-5 of that should be spent on HE to deal with thin-skinned SPAAs and SPGs
-Side profile is about the size of a schoolbus with only 25mm armor

Edit 2:
Actually some hide-and-seek on armor-view reveals a second, thicker plate of 39mm on the inside surrounding the internals, meaning side armor is 39 mm with a 25mm "skirt". Oh, and the wheel-trucks are each modeled, for another set of 20mm. Side's thicker than I thought, but still the ideal place to kill one of these boxes.
