He's kinda like The North Wind, in that he's a diety of wind frost and cold. IIRC there was something with a cocoon of ice or something, as well. Pretty sure none of that is in American Gods at all though.

I'm using spoilers because watching it today feels like i'm a time traveller or some poo poo.

Even though it's Anubis and not Death, that opening bit could be lifted straight out of Sandman and that rules. Also, Bast gets a namedrop. Good for her.

I kinda want to see what Baby Jesus would be like. Given how often he's invoked and the circumstances surrounding it I'd imagine him a scared little kid or the most sarcastic 12 year old ever.

Edit:
I know it's been said that they were planning on ending this season at the House but they've been playing/skipping to several scenes that were long past that point in the novel.

And damnit I really want to see Laura. I was really disappointed with the Sweeney scene (about the coin), the mystery and prophetic reveal in the book was so much more interesting.

Edit #2:
And to be clear, by see Laura I mean the whole scene not just that cliff hanger.

Hm. I'm really enjoying this show. But there are definitely some significant changes of impression compared to the book. And changing the impression of the story almost changes the story more than any blunt-force rejiggerings of the plot itself necessary for a TV adaptation.

The whole thing in the book is that the old gods are basically hanging on by the thinnest of threads. Most of the them aren't quite destitute hobos yet, but ain't that far off either. They have to resort to mundane jobs and mundane existences just to get by. When I envision the gods from the books, they're basically all but powerless and have only their wits and tricks to get by with.

And we do see that in this show...but there's also so much focus here, I feel, being placed on how wondrous and majestic these gods actually are. Maybe because this is a visual and aural medium where that sort of thing is so much easier to convey. Czernobog is a ratty old guy in a ratty old apartment, but he also comes across powerful and fearsome. Anansi isn't just a kooky guy telling tales out of the blue; his words have power to influence momentous events with dramatic consequences. That's kind of a far cry from the book going out of its way to stress that America is a bad land for gods to grow in, unlike other places where the gods could actually shape the course of people and countries.

And with this episode, I feel like the old gods are coming across even more alive and present than ever. Like...if Anubis is really still guiding Egyptian souls to the afterlife, he's totally still fulfilling his function. He's literally still doing exactly what he's always done. He feels like the jackal-headed Anubis of old, no more but no less. It's really cool, mind you, it's just that I wonder if it undermines the series' own central themes a bit, of the old gods being needy and bereft while the new grow fat with power.

I can predict the future! And you're going to be OKAY.
Good point but still. In Wednesday's chat with Zorya Vechernyaya he reminded her of all the things she used to have (back in the old land) that she definitely doesn't have here in America. Servants, good food, that sort of thing. These gods are used to excess and open adoration, not these tiny scraps of worship and belief they get here. They're of course still gods, not humans. They still fulfill their functions as necessary and dictated. But they live a shadow of their former, real selves from the old lands.

Now that the episode has aired everywhere I can share some stuff from the Q&A

Mousa, who plays the Jinn, watched gay porn and called up gay friends to ask them about accurately portraying gay intercourse. When it came time to shoot, the director told Mousa and Omid how to act and Mousa got to use his new knowledge to correct the director on sexual positions.

The dong was originally going to be 11 inches. The production designer started with that, not conceiving that anyone would want it to be a different size.

Mousa and Omid knew each other before this show because middle eastern actors basically all know each other. They were extremely grateful they got to play middle eastern men who weren't terrorists or sidekicks.

I wanted to point out that Anansi's sole scene so far is from when he literally came to America. When it's more likely than not that there were not only multiple people on the ship who believed in him, but also that their belief would be at its strongest given their situation. I'm curious to see his modern form, and whether he still has the same power. When Odin came to America, men who literally crewed the same boat went to battle with one another to sacrifice themselves to him. Now he's hustling his way into first class and stealing from banks to make ends meet.

The gods we've seen so far carry themselves with majesty and as if they were still powerful, but their living situations tell a different story. None of them are living high on the hog (except the Jesuses - probably).

I've been trying to work out what rubs me the wrong way about Anansi's scene in episode 2, and I think I finally nailed it down: it's the suit. It makes him look like a time traveller, they should have given him an extravagant, but period accurate costume. Very possibly something of African origin, in fact.

What're you taking that from, though? Did anything in the show explicitly date it? I guess you're just working from the fact that they're in the Caribbean, but did the show even say that or are we just assuming it from the book? Even then I don't think its crazy to think it happened a bit later on, there's not a lot of hard details in that scene to date it. You're massively nitpicking.

The show did explicitly say 1697 at the opening of that scene. But it's way beside the point to be talking about fashion, because Anansi is clearly appearing (at least to the audience) as a modern man, and is speaking to the audience. Who knows how the slaves on the ship actually saw him? Clearly they understood him despite him speaking in modern English, so why wouldn't his appearance be translated for them to something recognizable as well?

Also, I really hope these rumors of 5 seasons is wrong. I don't think it will be possible to stretch the material out that much, without an insane amount of filler. Even 3 seasons seemed like too much, but that's at least a reasonable figure. I'd much rather have 3 well paced, deliberate seasons than 3 seasons followed by an insanely compacted 4th to try to finish the plot because it got cancelled.

I've got to concede the point, though: I now learned that Orlando Jones specifically called for purple colors in the suit because that's an Ashanti colour of royalty. And fair enough: if you're gonna have a modern suit, that's the way to do it.

I think Gaiman recently said the American Gods sequel is at least three books away. He wants to do a Neverwhere sequel and another children's book. It could be out before the show wraps, but I think it's more likely the show will pass the book around season 3.

I think that pacing is probably fine. The book is dense, and rereading it, there is a lot of stuff that happens, especially with all the vignettes that are being included in the show. I'd like another American Gods book, but I'm not sure I need one, since I'm not even sure what to speculate on being the next direction to take it.

All of the gods are self-interested. The degree to which they are douchebags about it varies. Just because Anubis isn't bashing your head in with a hammer, doesn't mean he won't pull your heart out when it's time to do so.

Plus, Bast is a cat, and Mrs Fadil was standing at the edge of a ledge. She had to push her off. Cat law.

Like people were saying earlier and the show keeps mentioning, there's different forms of worship. Nobody dies to media, (well) but there's SOOOO many people watching TV every day, that Media is one of the more powerful gods right now. Even though gods like Wotan or Anansi get complete sacrifices of their followers lives, if its just a few followers, its not much. And they used to be far more powerful than they are now, they're waning in power as not as many people are willing to sacrifice for the old gods, they're stuck with minor worship.

So they don't have to be malicious per se, they don't have to kill. But sacrifice is a major form or worship, so you do have Bilquis absorbing people and it makes her vastly more powerful very very quickly, she goes from being old to looking younger and beautiful and gaining powers over gold and stuff.

All the gods are extremely self-interested, but they could get away with just helping people. Thing is, desperate times call for desperate measures, and they're all desperate, so some sacrifices are demanded.
